Why not earlier?

I am not sure why they decided to do Casino Royale after making up half original ideas for the films? Can anybody shred some light?

    It's to do with rights. Ian Fleming sold the rights to CR separately from his other books, hence the TV version of it in the 50s and the spoof in the 60s. The rights eventually ended up with EON owing to mergers between film companies, allowing them to create an official version.
