I just heard on the radio that Tom Mankiewicz passed away at age 68. Apparently from cancer.

He will be missed.

    That is very sad news...

He was the man behind screenplays of DAF, LALD and TMWGG, wasn't he?

I think he helped with Superman II, also.

He's responsible for some of the wittiest lines in the series. I just love DAF, LALD although his third Hamilton film wasn't much cop, he admitted he's begun to run out of steam.

I consider him the father of the "Moore" Bond.

    That's sad.

I heard he helped write TSWLM and MR but didn't want to be credited. He's even in the background of one of the Michael G. Wilson's interviews about the story for those films.

He really wasn't much of writer but he had a knack for dialogue As a matter of fact, I wish he came back to re-write some of the dialogue for Craig's films.

He rewrote DAF after Cubby had a dream about Howard Hughs.

Better that then original idea of Gert Frobe returning as Auric Goldfinger's twin bother. Ugh.

It's ironic; though Mankiewicz' work appears during what I consider Bond's weaker period, I've always enjoyed his dialogue---and of course I've never failed to enjoy any Bond.

None too ironic really to enjoy the dialogue and dislike the story. You know what is ironic ? Tom Makiewicz was recruited to make Mario Puzo's Superman script less campy.
