Yes, that's what I meant by making it more 'interesting' or rather more convoluted, all that plastic surgery stuff. Although it does help, along with Barry's moody score, to make Shrublands a more sinister, mysterious place than in the book.

My disapointment with this film is big. Because of the high expectation for us Connery Bond fans this was to be the "second coming". I have said this before but if I could only change one thing it would be the score. They had a chance to get James Horner but Connery chose LeGrand instead since Horner was young. I remember reading that at the time. After I had seen the film I was watching 20/20 I think and they showed a few scenes with the famous James Bond Theme and it hit me hard just how improved the scenes felt with good music. In hindsight, they should have made the film they wanted to and not call him James Bond. They could have gotten more money and every one thinks of him as Bond anyway so it wouldn't have mattered.
The music and some of campiness were the only problems I had with it.
I remember at the time thinking that it was more like a 60s Bond movie than anything Moore was doing. In particular, the cinematography had more vibrant color to it.
Never Say Never Again should be rescored -- with music that is less lethargic, it would be a much better received film, in my opinion. I understand to some degree why Connery wanted Legrand. His score for Ice Station Zebra, while not Bondian, shows that he can at least do epic. But the music for NSNA overall is just forgettable.
One thing that I simply can't forgive NSNA is the dodgy Atari battle which looked cheap even back in the days.
Another bad thing was the visibly underpowered motorcycle - Bond should not get a 650 cc from Q while the villain had a 900 Kawasaki in TSWLM.

I watched NSNA again last night for the first time in years. I watched it when I was about 15 and despised it. I'm 33 now so I figured it was time to give it another try and perhaps be more open to it. I was certainly more open and went in truly wanting to like it. And yet...
It's horrendous. Just awful on every level. The acting, the direction, the writing, the music, it's all just terrible (even coming from a rather talented crew). I could forgive much of this, though, if it didn't commit the ultimate sin: it's BORING. It is the only Bond film I've ever seen that was so boring that I wanted it to end...and it seems like it never will. It could be about 45 minutes shorter because nothing happens. And when anything finally does happen, it's so poorly staged that it's like watching a rehearsal. No tension, no excitement; everything just falls flat. Bernie Casey and Max von Sydow are the best parts of the movie, and they're each in it for about 4 seconds apiece.
Oh, and let me get this straight. The Bond gadget is a pen that fires a rocket. Okay, great. But you're telling me that the only way they could figure out how to write a pen into the script is to have the villainess, who has Bond at gunpoint, TOSS BOND A PIECE OF PAPER AND TELL HIM TO WRITE THAT SHE WAS THE BEST LOVER HE EVER HAD? Really? Is that not the worst scene in Bond history? If not, I'd love to know what is.

NSNA is certainly flawed - though the Fatima Blush sequences, climaxing in her final confrontation with Bond, and the earlier scenes with Largo are effective. After Fatima's death it all really sags.

The music deadens whatever virtues the film has. I would enjoy NSNA more if it had a right & proper score by John Barry. A score that gave it the atmosphere and emphasis of a Bond film. If I were making a fan edit, I would scrap the present score and replace it with this:
Barry's score for the 1977 remake of KING KONG is essentially a James Bond score. It's in the same style. It has all the motifs and movements of, say, DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER or MOONRAKER except the James Bond Theme which I would pick from another Barry score. KING KONG is such a great Bond-style score.
NSNA would play different with a dynamic Barry score and KING KONG is it. Now that I think about it, Barry's KING KONG would be applicable to FOR YOUR EYES ONLY as well.

All that being said, the film had some glaring weaknesses - a truly terrible score, including that awful title song, some cheesy looking special effects, very weak versions of M and Q, and a wasted appearance by Max Von Sydow as Blofeld. Despite its problems, I'd put NSNA above just about every Roger Moore Bond movie, with the possible exception of For Your Eyes Only.
