Eon are copycats

They copied starwars in 1979 with moonraker, they copied mcclory in the mid 80s buy doing a remake,( like it or not a view to a kill is a weak remake of goldfinger) they copied miami vice in 1989 with licence to kill, they copied fatima blush in goldeneye, they copied xxx with die another day, in 2006 they copied batman begins by doing a reboot now they are copying the jason bourne movies.

    OHMSS imho.

I have to agree superdaddy,OHMSS. (even YOLT was a remake of Dr No). Sad to say at the moment Eon has very little talent in house, so will jump on what ever flavour of the month is in vogue at the time. At the moment it's Bourne. If they thought a vampire all singing and dancing Bond would work we'd have "Twi-High & Die" in 3D

    Now that would really suck.

Rumors naturally have been arising of a 3-D Bond film and I really hope not, it's the return of a gimmick that shouldn't have been invented.

I can only hope for the next one they just knuckle down and get a decent script ( with some one-liners), a bigger plot for Bond to deal with, a better villian and some editing that the average film goer can follow. With C Nolan's latest offering almost hitting the 700 million mark there is a demand for some entertaining espionage escapism.

I just finished watching the Bourne trilogy over the past week or so, and it suprised me how good they were, even though I only watched the Bourne Identity when it was first released. The thing the films had were no flat spots. There's something always happening, always building. The shaky-cam action is annoying, but generally they are very good. So why when I watch any Bond from Goldeneye onwards are there huge segments of the film that either seem pointless, trail off significantly, or have scenes or dialogue merely to set up some line/gag/stunt?

The main problem IMNO with the modern Bonds are the really weak scripts, they have the apperance of being Bond films made by the numbers trying to cobble together a story thats a bit of OHMSS and Goldfinger then stick in a couple of scenes kinda like FRWL and hope this will be a hit. If they would just sit down and come up with a decent story,I'd be happy.
The Bourne series is teriffic I really enjoy them, But I find they're small in scale like watching a TV Series like CSI,They don't have the scope of a Bond.Although even the Bond's now seem to be down sizeing, And in part I do agree with you that some of the Later Bonds have slow sections that with a bit of better writing could of moved along alot faster.CR is a case in point as I'd of cut it by about twenty minutes. I'll not mention the Bond that dare not speak its name. But IMHO it has the same problems weak script,But might of been helpted by some extra dialogue scenes.

I feel that the main problem is that like it or not to some extent Bond is an anachrocism. Eon have been struggling with how to 'make Bond relevant' ever since GE and probably before (that could be another debate in itself). The tension being articulated is the need to preserve the esscence of the character but modernise him and the world he operates in at the same time. In some senses it's proving difficult not to 'throw the baby out with the Bathwater'. The current interpretation has much to commend it remains very much 'work in progress '. I to was frustrated by what I felt was a diversion from the emergent narrative of giving us Craig's fully formed Bond as promised in all the hoop-la that surrounded CR at the time.

What Bourne has, that Bond does not, is a tight tryptich of a narrative which in itself has painted Bourne into a corner. If the Bourne series were to continue it would run into problems of its own in how to maintain momentum.
That said, the quality of scripts in recent years has been poor with the exception of CR and the first half of DAD. I'm pretty sure that better scripts for Bond are possible. In fairness we will never know to what extent QOS suffered as a result of the writers strike. As previously posted I'm not a major fan of Wilson and Brocolli and would not mind at all if the recent haitus ended their tenure after Bond 23 (I doubt very much if they wil be ousted though, so we shall have to put up with more of those irritating cameos.

I agree with all you've said zaphod, The've remade the same basic Bourne movie for three outings. But with the recent news of spy rings in America I'm sure there is room for a modern spy movie.Satelites and drones are fine for collecting infomation,But they'll still always need people like Bond to do the tough hands on jobs. I just hope they sort something out.
And I too find those cameos irritating, mabey if more time had been spent checking the daily rushes rather than finding a spot for a screen apperance .......... well enough said.

You say that for the Roger Moore era as well.

It today's world mother dominated metro-sexuals who want to pretend to be men and whine about the awful world outside, yes sadly it's the case.

Generally speaking of the last decent Bond script, it was The Living Daylights by far. Every Bond since then has taken the generic action film route and with rise video games, Brosnan's last two films felt as much.

No. I'm a big Moore fan, if the mood takes me (call me fickle, but to watch Moore I need to be in a good humoured, nostalgic mood). I am not a fan of Moonraker though. My favourite novel, and my least favourite film. :#

I enjoy Moore's tenure as well but they all of them tended to waste time simply for the purpose of globe hopping.
