Why does bond say something like 'i thought i had a hat when i came in' in Thunderball? I know he had a hat but why this remark and the disappearing of the hat?

Richard Maibaum used many old war song references in the early films, and this is one of them. Exactly what a RN vet would say at an awkward moment....
