Need some help: Novels vs. Short Stories

I just finished reading "Casino Royale", and will soon be moving on to "Live and Let Die". I noticed that "For Your Eyes Only" and "Octopussy and the Living Daylights" are compilations of short stories. Do these follow the plot of the previous novels, or are they completely separate? For example, "For Your Eyes Only" was published in 1960, preceded by "Goldfinger" in 1959. Do the short stories in "For Your Eyes Only" pick up where "Goldfinger" left off?

Thank you!

I've always liked the James Bond movies and videogames, but I never read the books. I really liked "Casino Royale" and I'm looking forward to reading the others.

No; the short stories are all "stand alones"--they're taken to be many different adventures that happen at different times in Bond's life.

Personally I really enjoyed the Short Stories of For Youre Eyes Only extensivley. Escpescially, Risico and the Hilbrandt Rarity (pardon my spelling don't feel like looking it up). And they are stand alone.

I believe the following book pin-points, I guess to a reasonable degree, when these short stories took place in the Fleming canon.
