"The Spy Who Loved Me" Review

I think that this is an exceptionally classic film. Roger Moore's best and the best Bond film not strictly based on an Ian Fleming novel. Certainly, one of the most influential Bond films ever made.

This film comes right after "Goldfinger" in terms of stand-alone greatness and rewatch-ability for me. Like Goldfinger, TSWLM has top-notch quality in every aspect: the pre-title action sequence, the theme song, the main villain (Stromberg is better than all the screen Blofeld's IMO), the henchman (Jaws is easily neck-and-neck with Oddjob for greatest minor villain) and the Bond girl (Barbara Bach is probably the most unusual looking and acting beauty in the series. And her character is very likable). I think all of the action sequences are perfectly paced and directed. And the suspenseful sequences are the best since Terence Young directed the series. Kudos to the creative team and cast for this one.

TSWLM is the main Bond film that is enhanced by its modernness and excessive taste. You really couldn't ask for a better action/espionage film in the 1970s. Also, the humor works very well in this film, even though it would be imitated and eventually hinder the series. But that's always a normal reaction to a hit film. Why I will always love this film is because its the perfect balance of Fleming-esque tradition and all the fantastic liberties of the cinematic James Bond. I give this one a 9.5 out of 10 :007)

    I can still remember the excitement of first seeing TSWLM, I was 12 and had seen a couple of Bonds on the TV. And was basicly a Die Hard Bond Fan after it.I agree JBjr It was Roger Moore's Goldfinger,and although many would say it's far from Fleming,It was this Film that started my Intrest in all things Bond. -{

    I think it is one of the better RM movies – but still think it is a re-make of YOLT… still think that FYEO is the best RM movie..

    There are certain aspests of SPY that I admire but I think it's ultimately just the lesser clone of You Only Live Twice. I always enjoyed Golden Gun as Roger's best film.

    Not of fan of Roger Moore, but I agree on both points. TSWLM was one of his better efforts, and FYEO was hands-down his best Bond.
