Sunspel Long Sleeve Polo Shirt+ Craig´s trousers in CR Venice scene

Mr. VenzMr. Venz M´s apartmentPosts: 16MI6 Agent
Hi at all! I finally decided to become a member of this great forum. Very kind people around and it´s all about: Bond!
As I mentioned above my question is about the Sunspel Long Sleeve Polo. Does somebody of you own one and could
tell me about its quality and fitting? Thank you, with regards ( I wrote to Sunspel, thank you)

The second question is: Does anybody know the darkblue/ black pants Craig is wearing in the CR s Venice scene, where Bond is hunting after Vesper to get the money back? Regards

    Welcome to the site -{

The long sleeve polo shirts are very good quality as you would expect from Sunspel. They are light cotton and quite a tailored fit, no vents and a 2-button collar.

I have the long sleeve & the short sleeve versions, the only thing I would say lets them down is the lack of vents.

Otherwise. they are nicer than last season's 3-button polos, the cotton is totally different from the Riviera polos incase you wasn't sure.

I'm a 42" chest and have them in medium.

Thank you for fast reply and welcome! I´ve never had a piece from sunspel but this polo is very elegant (to my imagination:) ) and perfect for winter time. I am a 39" chest, but I think I will try it in S. My height is only 5 feet 8 inches (173 cm) and I
am afraid the shirt could be too long. Regards

If you have any questions with regards to length & sizing dimensions then send Sunspel and e-mail.

They are very helpful with anything you need to know regarding their products.

Thank you for your hint, I will try it out. ( I don´t want to get the Polo to look like Bond in Venice in CR, noooo:)):)) )

I'm 5'8" too and have both smalls and a medium, neither are long on me, these shirts are more on the short side.
Away at Boot Camp, won't be back until April the earliest.

Thank you Monza! Sunspel told me to get it in Medium, because of my chest;-)

But it´s nice to have a person here who helps me to compare the height and length by experience.

Welcome to the community Mr. Venz. As far as I know the long sleeve was not made by Sunspel (at least the one on the site was not used in "Casino Royale"). There was a tip some time ago that the polo was made by John Smedley and I am pretty sure that it is true, because one of them (I can not remember the model name, but it is still available in their shop) looks exactly the same ;)

I don't know. I've heard the John Smedley idea as well, but whenever I look at pictures of the CR polo, it looks like the shirt has a hidden placket, and I have yet to see a John Smedley with a hidden placket.

Hidden placket? You mean the grey Sunspel shirt under it? Anyway, I am 100% certain that it is not the Sunspel polo, because it has no welts like the John Smedley's one. I think they could use a JS model from 2005 or 2006, which is not available now, and we can now just wonder if that is true or not.

I think BuckMcNaked means that when the shirt is buttoned up, the buttons are hidden by the fabric on the shirt placket, e.g. like the the Casino Royale Turnbull & Asser tuxedo shirt. I think it's referred to as a "fly front".
  • MrZarebaMrZareba Krakow, PolandPosts: 1,775MI6 Agent
But the Casino Royale polo has not got such thing, or am I wrong? I was thinking about this one: http://www.johnsmedley.com/mens/mens-shirts/leander.html in the color called "Nocturne".

The photo evidence isn't completely indicative, though it makes me about 90% sure that the polo does have a hidden placket or "fly front." Also, I believe the CR Venice Polo has only two buttons, while the John Smedley Leander has three. Another thing, the stitching/banding at the bottom of the polo doesn't match the stitching/banding of the John Smedley polos. I've also always thought that the collar never seemed to match, but I can't say for sure.

It is a nice looking polo shirt though.

Hello to everyone! Thank you for your welcome and especially for your great support!

@Mr Zareba: The colour you mentioned hits the original polo quite exactly; more than the Sunspel navy blue.
I think another difference between them is that the JS polos are more fully fashioned and look more like a pullover.
The Sunspels look more like an original polo with long sleeves. But both are classy- the JS has a classy price, either...;-)

@BuckMcNaked: I think you are right- the CR polo has two buttons. On the picture I´ve seen Craig´s collar is turned down
so one can´t see it really. But looking at the spaces between the buttons there seem to be only two.

@ics: Good afternoon! Thank you! Greetings to Denmark!

I know the trousers are not the original but do you think they suit the Venice pants a bit?

Like I said: it looks like a John Smedley's polo shirt that has been discontinued, because there are a few difference between the CR shirt and the Leander. The fabric however looks the same, the sleeves ending also. I do not know :/

Found some really good closeups of the polo here:

    Hope this helps!

Thank you drum007. Although taking those great pictures into account it´s very hard to say anything about the brand etc.. PS: The jacket Craig is wearing on this picture is the only Bond-piece I do NOT want to have...:D :D

I have a feeling that the Venice pants are in fact the dark blue version of the Ocean Club brown Ted Baker pants. The reason is that I have the brown version and looking at the Venice screen shots, the material looks identical....but in blue.

Thank you for your hint. I checked the Ted baker- homepage but I could not find anything compareable.

The Sunspel long sleeve is lovely though.

    2. Irony.
    3. Lists.

The long-sleeve CR polo was confirmed quite a while ago as not being Sunspel.

Use the search facility if you need any long standing info is my advice.

The dark Venice trousers are not linen and I don't believe they were identified either.
  • RANDRAND Posts: 124MI6 Agent
In regard to the Ted Baker pants...they are a linen/mohair mix worn during the ocean club casino scenes, and these have been identified, and not the light brown chino pants worn during the Bahamas return.
I would think that they are no longer a current sale item as they would be from the 2005/6 season.

Really stupid question: Does anyone know what color socks her was wearing in this scene? If not, what color should you wear with navy blue pants and black trainers?
  • BuckMcNakedBuckMcNaked Missouri, USAPosts: 152MI6 Agent
When he jumped in the water, I got the impression that he was wearing ankle socks. If that's the case, I imagine dark brown or blue would serve you just fine.

Layed up today on the sofa watching Casino Royal. Intrigued by how cool the long sleeve polo looks onscreen (never fancied it from the Sunspel pics) I revisited the polo assuming it is a John Smedley as rumoured.

I cannot for the life of me find a two button John Smedley polo shirt new or even old ones on eBay, also the buttons on all their old shirts always matches the color of the shirt (they are white buttons in Casino Royal)

    Just a heads up, the long sleeve Sunspel is on sale on their website!!! -{

Sadly it looks nothing like the polo used in the movie except it has two buttons in comparison to the John Smedley's... I would rather buy the latter because the arms, the colour, everything is fine except that three damn buttons.
