Stupid Questions ?

This is Probably a Stupid question,But. In TND When the battleship is about to be attacked,The order is given to Brace for Impact,Then all the sailors seem to basically lean or brace themselves I guess against the hull of the ship.I was wondering if an ex-service men would know what their doing.and what the thinking is behind it.
Also If anyone has a stupid or Embarrassing Question why not let it loose here.
Another One I've argued with others about,
In Goldeneye In the questioning room The general Empties Bond's Gun,throwing it back to Bond,But shouldn't there be a round Loaded in the Chamber of the Automatic. Once again Sorry if these questions are Bleeding Obvious

I'll never understand why Vargas is in such a bloomin' hurry to get back to the Volante when searching for Bond after the grenades explode underwater. Okay, you found a flipper, (or was it a mask), why not search a little more before high speeding back to report. (report what exactly? Largo doesn't seem the sort to accept a spy's mask and not a corpse)

Maybe even a slower exit for any final signs you might have missed. Instead, they break Mach two leaving the scene!

And why does Ferrara (FYEO) adore the phrase "Smuggling operation" so much? He uses it twice, both times lovingly accenting and rolling his Rs. I love it actually.

This may sound like the most stupid question here, but why does Bond always have dinner with the enemy. They could just pull a gun out and shoot him right there when he's eating. He never seems to worry if the food is drugged or not.

Yes, Bond's weapon is on the table in the interrorgation (loaded for starters!). And yes, after Oramov shoots it, there would be a round in the chamber, and the Walther PPK is an auto capable of firing without the magazine in place. I hate that scene. X-(

My father in law was in subs for ten years and it's a standard procedure to brace for impact, to stop yourself being thrown against the hull. Best to wrap limbs around something - that's sailors for you...

It's certainly curious as to why villains never choose to simply shoot Bond at the first opportunity but instead lock him up or wine him and dine him while they think of the most elaborate way possible to kill him. But I'm glad that they do otherwise he wouldn't have even survived Dr No!

However, what's Blofeld's excuse? Having encountered Bond numerous times you would think that he at least would have expedited him quickly.

OK, but why does it have to stop at the tip of his sternum? Seriously, who thought that was a good idea?
Makes him look taller I guess... :))

I never thought of it either but sure Isn't Bond worried the Villian will poision him at some Dinner.Although I suppose they'd say The villian needs some one to show off to,and Bond has the Gig.I also wonder why theres no Elevator music in any of the Movies, Mabey Bolfeld and his mates only like Drum & Base.
Mabey In DAF the Pink tie represents his Tongue at seeing "Bambi and Thumper " :))

Some things I genuinely don't know...

What does Tatiana say when Bond gives her the "Mrs. Somerset" wedding ring on the train? She seems quite happy and mutters something that sounds like French, but I can never make out what it is.

Similarly, does anyone know what the pretty French agent says as she and Bond are getting in the car at the end of the TB teaser?

What is a "yard arm" (which M fears the PM will hang him by after Scaramanga gets away in TMWTGG)?

The yard arm is the horizontal boom of a large sail. I suppose sailors were hung from it because it's the only part of an old ship to have sufficient height and clearance to hang someone by. I know that when the sun was over the yard arm it was said to be the earliest to have a drink (alchoholic) ie about 11am to mid-day - but that would also depend on the ships global position... :s

And there I was thinking, it was when the sun 'set' over the yard arm... (about 6 ish, in North Atlantic terms) - humph, all that drinking time missed :))

Does EON have the movie rights to the Gardner/Benson Novels,or Can they be bought by another company, or do they have some legal issue that gives them first refusal,as I suprised another company hasn't snapped them up.

this may be the most stupid and pointless question but in moonraker, would eon have got in trouble for saying that drax would have had the eiffel tower at his home if he had not been refused an export permit by the french government?
  • ThunderpussyThunderpussy Behind you !Posts: 63,792MI6 Agent
I think it was just a way of saying how much wealth Drax had, After all London Bridge was sold to an American Buissness Man as a Tourist Attraction. I wouldn't think the French would ever sell the Eiffel Tower.

Several times in the novels Fleming wrote scenes in which Bond and his enemy size each other up. This gives the villain a chance to "spill the beans" as it were. There is a terrific dinner scene in Dr. No in which the good doctor gives Bond his back story and explains his reasons for toppling missiles and his overall quest for power. It also gives Bond a chance to taunt the villain or be impressed with the villain's genius, or come to grips with just how great the stakes in this particular game really are. Bond doesn't worry about being poisoned because there would be no point to it. Why capture Bond, wine and dine him, tell him your whole fiendish plot, just to poison him? There are less expensive and less risky ways of dealing with someone. When Bond and his adversary put on these masks of civility, they are doing so get each other's measure. It's a chance for the villain to have his moment and a chance for the reader/audience to take a breath before the next action sequence.
    At risk of sounding repetitive: Read the books. -{

In LALD, who sends Bond the Queen of Cups card warning about Rosie when he's at the breakfast table? It can't be Mr Big, he wouldn't want Bond to know.
