What film brought you into liking james bond?

James SuzukiJames Suzuki New ZealandPosts: 2,406MI6 Agent
What was the first Bond film that you watched that brought you into liking it? Mine is Goldeneye. I heard of James Bond of course, and i remember watching you only live twice when i was like six, but I decided to watch Goldeneye. I enjoyed it so much that i bought FYEO and have slowly added to my collection and I've now watched every single Bond film except NSNA and Casino Royale (1967). What was your earliest Bond memory and what sparked you liking Bond?

    Great topic!

    The Spy Who Loved Me.

On the couch of my mother's female neighbor, on TV and on a late Saturday evening, at the age of I think 8 or 9.

Mine was Goldeneye. I remember really wanting to see it in the cinema when I was 10 as the poster looked exciting but couldn't as it was a 12. I did get to see it when it came out on video (no dvd's in those days lol).

What attracted you to it, mrbain007?

    "Bland" - Pah!!

I listened to this review of GE a few days ago, Siskel left me open mouthed :o

I don't really know what attracted me to it to be honest. I suppose I just found the story exciting and the music and locations quite cool. Plus I really enjoyed Pierce's Bond. To me, he WAS Bond when growing up. Thats why I really don't like seeing people dump on him now.

    We are spoiled brats.

Egypt. Cairo. The pyramids. Four thousands years old history illuminated. On a chair out in the desert and that old, knowing wind on our face.

And we complain about a missing Mr. Moore, no Jaws and no Miss Bach (Those cheekbones! Heaven ....).

    Spoiled.

    And wise ;)

Yes, I suppose you are right.

But I guess I am finally at the age now, where I realise that the romanticism of the movies does not overflow into real life.....

....and so now I don't even bother wearing the rose tinted glasses - I just have low expectations.

That, in itself is so sad. I never would call myself a cynic, but I think I just have :#

I wouldn't have a clue, I must have been around 5 years old when I started watching them. Always Xmas time on the tele!

The main memory for me is seeing Octopussy in the cinema but that certainly wasn't the one that got me hooked!! Being an 80s kid I was brought up on Moore, wouldn't like to say how many times I wanted A View To A Kill, remember the theme tune being huge at the time too with Duran Duran!!!!

I remember seeing Goldfinger on the CBS Saturday Night Movie when I was just 8 or 9 years old. I remeber those slowly spinning film reels and the announcer saying "We now return to Goldfinger starring Sean Connery, Honor Blackman and Gert Frobe in the title role." That was long before ABC got hold of the films and mercilessly chopped them "for content and to run in the time allotted." I will never forget Oddjob and that deadly hat or the magnificent fight in the gold vault when Oddjob "blew a fuse."
My Dad introduced me to Bond with that film and I will always remember sitting with him in front of the t.v., past my bedtime, with a big bowl of popcorn, a glass of milk for me, a beer for Dad and of course the Dom Perignon for 007.
Goldfinger was my introduction to Bond and I have never looked back. ;)

The first Bond movie I watched was The Man With the Golden Gun, so I suppose I should credit that film for getting me into James Bond, although I don't like the film much nowadays. It certainly got me interested enough to want to watch more, and to find out what Bond originally was like. So I started watching Thunderball not long after, then Goldfinger and Dr No. I suppose I can say that The Man With the Golden Gun got me interested, but Thunderball got me hooked :)

I don't remember what was the first one I saw, but TBS (American tv channel) used to do Bond marathons every Christmas. I think it was called "the 007 days of Christmas". Then every Christmas I watched James Bond movies. I was probably about 14/15 when I first really got into them. But I would only end up catching glimpses of them on TV since they were almost 3hrs with commercials. So I started to go rent them to see the full movies. I think Dr.No was the first one I rented, completely unaware that it was the first one in the series. Blind luck, lol.

That combined with the Goldeneye game for Nintendo64. Which came out at about the same time.

When they first started showing Bond on TV,I watched Dr No and FRWL, Luckily TSWLM was soon released, So I'd say SPY Was the one that got me hooked,Although Not until I watched OHMSS did I remember scenes from it and learned my parents had taken me as a 4 or 5 year old to see it when they where on Holidays.

Goldfinger on the tv when I was about six or seven. I knew about Bond and had seen it on the tv (Roger Moore was Bond when I was a kid), but in Goldfinger Bond had the Aston Martin DB5. My grandfather was an Aston fanatic and also owned a DB5 and later a DB6 and seventies DBS (aka OHMSS). I was actually getting picked up from school once a week or so in Bond's car! :D Kids would peer through the window and ask where the ejector seat button was, where the machine guns were - that sort of stuff. I was suddenly very popular indeed, and as a result, got very interested in Bond from there.

** The DB5 and DBS were later sold, as he actually prefered the DB6. Car enthusiasm skipped a generation and the DB6 was sold after his death - the money put into a failing business and subsequently forgotten about. The DB6 has since been written off, the DB5 is way out of my price range with an owner intending on keeping it forever, but I have traked down the DBS, made an offer and it is under consideration. It needs a little tlc inside and out, but if he accepts I intend on making it an ajb thread covering it step by step to it's former OHMSS spec glory!

Ah, that's interesting. A friend of mine at school had an old Aston Martin DB4 I think, grey too, but didn't look that much like Bond's car but enough. A bit rough round the edges.

GF and TB got me into Bond, circa 1975, but only on a black and white 21in telly. Those seemed to be the only films shown around that time, Dr No wasn't for maybe a decade, nor FRWL though I may have missed latter on a skiing trip 1978.
GF and TB were enough to get one hooked, though TSWLM at the cinema seemed a bit strange after that.

My first 007 was TSWLM in the cinema with my girlfriend Ulla :x She looked exactly how it sounds and I am not sure, how much from the movie I have seen :D I remember, that we had seats in the first raw of the balcony.

I remember, that for seeing Moonraker, we had to drive 20 miles with our bikes one way.

FYEO made me a fan. Once, that I have seen it, I have fallen in love for James Bond, for Cortina, for Carol Bouquet and for the Lotus Turbo Esprit. I also started admiring Bogner jackets and Olin skis, started buying Seiko.

    And Roger Bond never has been better -{

    It was around the time Moonraker came out and I remember HBO was playing all the Bond movies so this had to be in '79 I was about 10 and remeber watching them with my Mom And Dad. It was kind of a blur because they kept showing them and i remember a couple of seens from them and I thought this guy is cool. the first seen I remember was the fight scene on the elevator in DAF another was Bond walking in and sitting down at the Sumo contest and I thought Bond could whip those guys. I kept thinking that is the life. but the first movie I saw in a theatre was FYEO and it was awesome. -{

I too was hooked by Moonraker, at the time only a wee lad, but with his gadgets, gizmos and girls that was the man I wanted to be.
Then, as I'm a 90's child, I got all the joys of the Brosnan era.

Oh i love this topic. Id always been a casual Bond fan as a kid and used to catch glimpses of the films here and there and had toys and annuals etc, but in July 1987 at Butlins Phwelli Holiday Camp, they had a double bill of Bond movies : Octopussy and A View To A Kill. I was hooked on Bond as soon as i saw a clown guised 009 getting chased through the woods of East Berlin. The scene actually frightened the hell out of the 7 year old me. So Octopussy was the one that got me hooked, it had everything i wanted to see in a Bond film: great action scenes, exotic locations, beautiful girls, great music. To this day i think its a great Bond movie, a superb action movie and Roger Moore is spot on in it, from the opening scenes in the acrostar jet, he became my hero. I cant understand why both he and the movie takes alot of stick.

Incidentally the same cinema showed Superman II and Superman III back to back as well as Krull, Rocky III and IV, Conan The Destroyer and Red Sonja and bizzarly Rising Damp The Movie and Cannon and Balls The Boys in Blue haha!
