Formal Dress Question

Ahoy all,
I have been trying to research the nuances of formal evening dress codes, do any of you AJBers (or is the new term Bondites or something like that?!) know anything about it all!?
Basically I am conducting an opera at university in a couple of weeks, and I wanted to wear a tails coat that I acquired over the holidays, but I don't have the appropriate white tie and waistcoat, do you think this matters? I was hoping to wear a red tie and a black cummerbund (as these are the society colours), do you think that would look awful?! Otherwise I would just wear black tie and cummerbund... I reckon I could get away with that but what does everyone think?!
Bond would know what to wear, I know that much :007)

Whatever you do Jedi - which ever colours you go for, make sure your tie (and I'm assuming it's a bow tie you're refering too?) is NOT a pre-tied one. That is a complete NO NO! Tieing a bow tie is tricky - BUT is so much classier - a pre tied one just looks lazy - and Bond would NEVER use one!
Let us know what you decide and how it goes!
Hi
In formal evening dress codes (for men) I would go straight to http://www.blacktieguide.com/ .
It is by far the best resource on men's evening wear in cyberspace!
