No more new James Bonds please. Long live Daniel Craig

Today is my 42nd birthday and I have managed to convince myself I am not old.

How have I managed this miracle you may wonder?

BECAUSE I am younger than the current James Bond, only just, but younger all the same.

Now I figure that this cannot last, unless Daniel Craig remains James Bond forever…

Therefore I beseech you all, let's keep Craig in the job. I personally am a big fan and he is certainly my No. 1 Bond to date… but for my sense of health and happiness if nothing else… LONG LIVE Daniel Craig as James Bond.

-{ -{ -{ -{ -{ I have still only ever managed five Vespers in a row to now. :D :)) :007) :p B-)

Then don't put your vespers in a row.
Place them about the table randomly and then drink them.
You may manage six or seven.

I agree - let's keep Craig in for a long as possible..... I got my math wrong in another thread, and thought Daniel was 42 - oops.... Maths was never my strong suit - anyway.... I say keep him in !

I've managed 5 Vespers too - not sure if that is a good thing or not.... :#

All of you have made me feel old now. I'm going to be 48 soon. Daniel Craig is 5 years younger than me, but I know the aches, pains and stiffness he is going to get. I'm growing hair in places I don't need it. I'm shaving more than I did 10 years ago.
    I am excited they will begin filming the new James Bond movie this November 2011. I'm trying to keep my new white hairs from growing out. just long enough for the new movie to be released. :007) -{

It's a very odd thing, in your early 20s you can start to feel real old. I did. It's because of the comedown after the teen years which make such a big impression, you feel like the party's over and you're looking over your shoulder. It doesn't help if you're listening to the same music as you did as a teen, or are still living 'at home' with your parents and the room is full of teen relics, or wearing much the same clothes. You actually might feel younger in a few years time.

Try spending more around 80-something year olds - you'll be decades younger by comparison! :)) I'm a gerontology researcher, and one of my favorite things about working with folks thrice my age is the wonderful stories they have from all decades of their lives. You have so much more to share now than you did when you were younger. Many belated returns of the day, Alec006!

If it makes you feel any better, I found my first white hairs at age 17 :#

Anyway, back to the topic of Bond and aging - I honestly don't understand all the jibes about Craig's appearance. Looking at him in CR, you would never realize that humans naturally lose 10% of their muscle mass each year starting in their early to mid 30s.
Flattery will get you nowhere, but don't stop trying.

As one of the more senior members of this site, turning 55 next month, I can tell you ageing is an interesting experience. some good, some bad. Because I have always been of slight build with no weight issues, my biggest depressing fact is thinning hair, I have to remember to wear a cap if I am working in the yard, or the top of my head will be burned. In addition, one must make more frequent dental visits if you want keep all the choppers. I can still play basketball and football with my sons, just not as quick I use to be and all parts still work without any pharmaceutical assistance. :D

As for Craig, I don't think he has ever "looked" the part and unlike Roger Moore he doesn't appear to have young genes. However, film technology can keep an actor looking young, so who knows how long he might be Bond.
  • TracyTracy the VillagePosts: 369MI6 Agent
Craig lacking young genes compared to Roger Moore? I'm afraid I'll have to respectfully disagree, Mr. Nelson - I know it's been said again and again, but physical fitness and maintaining muscle mass is critical to maintaining cellular longevity. I'm somewhat embarrassed to say that my dad works out more often than I do, and he's in a wheelchair! :# I like Roger Moore, but all that suntanning wasn't great for his wrinkles on screen back in TSWLM and onwards. Craig at least hasn't reached that point of saggy muscles where he starts resembling the Governator Ah-nuld :))

Sorry, I respectfully disagree with you. Roger Moore was 47 when he made his second Bond film TMWTGG and he was a younger looking Bond than Craig looked at 40 when he made his second Bond film QOS. So the studio hired a personnal trainer and buffed up Craig for his film, that doesn't make him look young. Facially, Craig has always looked older than his age.

I suspect working out is not part of Mr. Craig's normal routine.

    The hard man Bond, Connery
    The Romantic Bond, Lazenby
    The funny Bond, Moore
    The serious actor Bond, Dalton
    The Entertainment Bond, Brosnan

But change is good, so I can't wait to see who they come up with for us after Craig. :))

My goodness, Tracy. When you write, you do write. I thought Roger Moore was perfect as James Bond. Who cares if his muscles were diminishing with age. He looked great in a tuxedo and his facial expressions and wit were perfect. I liked his sense of humor. By the way, I did see Roger Moore with his biceps when he had his shirt off. He was a muscular James Bond.
I applaud Daniel Craig for doing his own stunts and changing James Bond into a faster, stronger character. I don't like how arrogant James Bond was portrayed in Casino Royale (2006) and the ending of Quantum of Solace (2008) made my skin crawl. However we have to remember Casino Royale takes the Bond story back to the beginning of his 007 roots.
I can watch Daniel Craig as James Bond now and relax. I am looking forward to Bond 23 and Bond 24.
I'm aging too and aren't we all. So glad they are going to crank these movies out every two years again. I would say we have missed at least 5 James Bond movies that could have been made during these court cases and bankruptcy that have taken place over the years.

I would like to see a new James Bond too. Daniel Craig is going to be the last Bond around my age and I realize the next actor will probably be 15 to 20 years younger than I am. I thought Roger Moore playing James Bond from age 46 to 57 was perfect.

You're right. Craig really worked out hard for Casino Royale. In some scenes he looked pumped. As a man gets older, muscles do decrease. It gets harder to build muscle and being able to keep it on. Not only can we get man-boobs, but they do start to sag. Chest hair starts to look uglier. Our ears continue to grow and so does our nose.
Now that someone has said it first, I can speak my peace now.
I don't want to hurt feelings, but it is Craig's face that does not look James Bond to me. I'm not a handsome person either. I do see the Bond character inside Daniel Craig, I just don't like Bond being played so arrogant.
I was hoping for Clive Owen at the time.
Let's face reality, who could they get to play the next James Bond who will be in his 30's? I think Daniel Craig is all they got right now.
The next actor to be James Bond will probably be an unknown to us now. Timothy Dalton was a nice surprise and I thought his James Bond was fantastic in Licence To Kill.
It seems they like to choose an actor who has been in several movies and tv episodes, but is not so well-known yet.

Much appreciated, james362001 - it's nice to write something that's not an academic journal article or a policy brief :))

I have nothing against Roger Moore - I love the Saint for what it is, and I do love the glimpses of the more mature, wiser Bond we see in FYEO and OP. I know what you mean about the arrogance of Craig's Bond in his past two movies, but I think he had to reach that breaking point, to recognize the self-destructive consequences of his actions earlier in his career (that whole opera sequence where he dangles the man off the roof is gorgeously disturbing). I'm hoping for a more mature characterization in the Bond 23 script, potentially mentoring another younger 00 mirroring the more impulsive Bond we saw in CR.

Let Daniel Craig complete his three films with Bond 23.

    Then fire him.

Then reboot. Find an under-30 U.K. actor who is "tall dark and handsome in a dark cruel sort of way" as mm puts it in her post above. Someone who projects the inner makeup, in all its subtleties and contradictions, of the character Ian Fleming wrote. An intuitive, intelligent, reasoning, compassionate yet cruel, blunt instrument. Try to come as close to Sean Connery as possible. Also, upgrade the writing 100%, and free of it agendas so that the character can breathe and function. I like how Jeffery Deaver analyzes Bond in interviews. Deaver is disciplined and scientific in his thinking and his observations are dead-on accurate. When his book comes out I think it will demonstrate how James Bond should be portrayed, and coincidentally, how the films should be written.

Oh, Lord have mercy on our souls--the "R" word! Reboots have become the latest Hollywood trend--Spider-Man is being rebooted, and now Warner Brothers is talking about a Batman reboot after Christian Bale does his third film. We've already had a Bond reboot with Casino Royale, and that was enough for me.

They need to correct their mistakes and do it right next time.

Richard--W, I think we're a bit far into the game now to be saying, "Bond should be THIS WAY AND NO OTHER!!!!" The 007 world is a broad church and that has been one of its strengths.
  • Richard--WRichard--W USAPosts: 200MI6 Agent
I never said "Bond should be THIS WAY AND NO OTHER!!!!" No, I never said that. Sounds like you are saying that, however.

A lot of people reject the Casino Royale / Quantum of Solace reboot for reasons that make sense. It was an illegitimate reboot, and I reject it absolutely. I don't buy into it, and I never will. But I am aware that a lot of people do.

Your comment "The 007 world is a broad church and that has been one of its strengths" may be taken as an encouragement by the people who want to see this misguided reboot corrected. If the 007 world is the broad church you say it is, then there is room for another reboot, one that is founded in Ian Fleming's chapter and verse.

I totally agree. Daniel Craig has had his time. But the funny thing is Craig comes closest to looking like the real spy that Bond is supposedly based on. Popov Dusko, the real spy was short, fair complexion with dirty blond hair much like Daniel. Dusko's cover was a lady's man, gambling playboy.
