M's apartment black polo in "Casino Royale"

About 2 years ago I think there was a thread about the coat Craig was wearing in that scene. I can't find however a topic about the polo, someone mentioned that it was an Yves Saint Laurent. Does anybody know the brand? It doesn't seem to be Sunspel because it has 3 buttons, right? :D

    Yep. Three buttons.

This may be an odd question, but does anyone know if the polo was tucked in, or worn out? I've watched the scene over and over, and I can never tell...

I think there's some kind of fashion rule that pretty much says to never tuck in a polo. Anyone else heard something like that before?

I've never heard that, old boy. I sometimes tuck polo's in to my trousers, especially my Sunspel as they're uncommonly long. At our country club (and most other golf courses that I've been to), they firmly advise that shirts are tucked in to promote their 'smart casual' look. I guess it depends on where you are or what you are doing.

Out of curiosity, does anyone else have an issue with the Sunspel's length?

Well I can see an exemption for wearing them at work or at a country club to follow their guidelines. But I looked it up after I posted and found a couple sites that support them being untucked if possible, with rare exceptions.

There are indeed some that are meant to be tucked in, just like some button dress shirts are just so long they must get tucked in and can't be untucked for casual wear.

Generally, people untuck, but it is not possible or correct in all scenarios.

Does anyone know how Bond actually wore his in the apartment scene?

Friends don't let friends tuck their polos. :))

I can't see tucking them for casual wear without a specific reason. I'd use a longer polo if they had to be tucked for work, golf course, etc. Otherwise why not get them altered or find the right length polo for casual time? Looking cooler is worth the cost IMO.

Like I said, not all scenarios allow untucked. In a professional or less casual situation, it gets tucked in. Some shirts should not be worn untucked, so do not try wearing an extra long shirt for a casual night because it probably isn't meant for that. Just pick out an appropriate length shirt for casual scenarios.

I wasn't trying to suggest that you choose to tuck in for casual. If you leave work and you have a long polo on, it just may not be a good idea to untuck if the shirt isn't meant to be.

I get what you are saying though. If it can be untucked, it should be.

The "tail" of my Ralp Lauren polo is mega long (not the same as front)

The Ralphies are easy to have tailored. I had mine done a while back, looks great now.

Any chance the polo is a John Smedley? Then again the Navy one in Venice was never sussed out

My Sunspel is much shorter than American brands; just right.

I think the polo might be a long sleeve one, like Connery's in TB--either a real cotton polo, or a wool or silk polo sweater. The long sleeve numbers usually have 3 buttons. And it would go with the generally fall/winter feel of the coat, plaid (flannel?) pants and chukkas. No proof but gut instinct developed from watching the movies and selling high end men's wear to pay for grad school.

That's an interesting idea... I never considered that it might be a sweater. It would make sense, since obviously the overcoat is a winter piece.

Possibly something similar to this: http://www.johnsmedley.com/us/mens/mens-shirts/finchley
For an affordable alternative, you can find them in silk or merino from Brooks Brother,Polo, Jos. A Bank, and most
    department stores.

One of the internal consistancy problems with the movie: most of the clothing (at least what Bond wears in Europe) hints at Fall or Spring, but when he looks at the security footage at the Ocean Club, the day is from July.

Great choice in the sub tropics as you head into this time of year.

Thing about a lot of hotels and restaurants is that the AC is often too cold for me. So these work.

Hmmm, can't tell from the pics if it's a sweater or not... if it is a sweater, it must be fairly thin. Also, I assume he has the sleeves pushed up, or else they would show under the coat sleeves (And I think it would be very odd to wear a short sleeve polo under a topcoat like that.)

Been a big fan of Smedley clothes of late and the jumpers / sweaters are all very thin

My merino sweaters are pretty thin. On the pants, I'm not sure if they're flannel or a year-round style. Anyone have any ideas?

I know this is a really old topic, but I was looking on some used YSL polos on eBay, I'm just wondering where are we standing with this thread. There was a picture from the "On Set" book by G. Williams, where Craig is without the coat. Has it anyone? It would be much easier to identify.

What picture is that? From the casino royale book?

Yes, I'm not 100% sure, but I think I've seen somewhere a picture in M's apartment with Craig without the coat. So there was a pretty good view of what the polo looks like. And it wasn't a long sleeve. David will help I think!

The correct thing to wear would be a long sleeve knitted polo, such as 100% merino or cashmere.

You can't go wrong with something from Sunspel or John Smedley.
