What are people’s general feelings about Ebert’s original reviews of both Dalton movies?

Was he the one of the two who totally DISREGARDED the films? One of them did I can remember that much. Loser to whichever one insulted The Living Daylights - definitely one of the greatest Bond films. Second best of the 80's, behind For Your Eyes Only IMO. Though, Licence To Kill was not an idea Bond movie for me. Worst Bond film of the 80's, though I still enjoyed it.

Roger ebert dismissed dalton and said that brosnan would have been better, because of his appearance in the fourth protocol. then dismissed brosnan in goldeneye,
i dont know why this mans views are rated and mentioned on other sites.

He also says video games can't be art like movies. He ignores the fact that like movies, most games are not art and are just entertainment, but he completely ignores and disrespects games like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and Flower for how simple and emotional they are.

But that is another discussion. I don't think Ebert is as great as he is legendary. He can be off sometimes.

I thought it was Gene Siskel who thought Brosnan would've been better whereas Ebert praised Dalton.

If you watch this video montage, eventually you'll see Gene Siskel totally dismissing Timothy Dalton while praising Pierce Brosnan simultaneously. But what you don't see in this montage is Siskel doing a complete 180 and throwing Brosnan under the bus during his GoldenEye review. I guess Siskel just liked Sean Connery so much that he couldn't get over the fact that it would be several more years before they could finally get an actor who was even remotely worthy enough to be mentioned in the same breath as Connery....This of course, wouldn't happen in Gene Siskel's lifetime however, because of the seven year gap between Siskel's tragic death in February 1999 and the release of Casino Royale in November 2006.

If a critic agrees with me he's right if he disagrees then he's wrong. :))

I don't necessarily think that Gene Siskel was wrong but I do somewhat detest the guy for being inconsistent, and I wonder why Roger Ebert never brought up Siskel's inconsistency during the GoldenEye review.

Try not to judge these American film critics to harshly, after all when it comes to action movies like Bond they seem to have different expectations then the rest of us.

For instance I watched a Youtube clip of of Siskel and Ebert from 1995 where they praised Jean Claude Van Damme's film Sudden Death which to many action film fans was just a Die Hard ripoff set at a hockey game.

Roger Ebert wrote Beyond Valley of the Dolls. How can you take anyone who would write a something like that seriously when it comes to critiquing other films?

I wasn't talking about Ebert though. I was talking about Siskel.....Although I guess I shouldn't speak ill of the dead.
