DO NOT BUY Live and Let Die jump boat carpet

http://cgi.ebay.com/JAMES-BOND-MISSION-LOGS-BOAT-CARPET-JBR6-RELIC-102-199-/350465921423?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item519965918f#ht_2212wt_907

My uncle was the former owner of the Glastron "Live and Let Die" jump boat.
This site seems to be an authority on James Bond movie props so I'd like to make you
aware of this bogus James bond "relic" that has been available for sale.
The carpet may be from the actual boat, but the carpet was replaced in 1982 when
my uncle purchased the boat. The boat had been sitting uncovered for years when
he bought it so the original carpet was in poor shape. He sold it it the Ian
Flemming foundation in 1996. Soon after they offered pieces of the carpet for sale.
When they first appeared for sale, my uncle notified them that he had replaced the carpet,
but they still continued to offer them for sale. Now the Rittenhouse Archives is producing
these. There is nothing authentic about them no matter what so-called certificate
or seal is issued with them. I do not like seeing people buy something that really
isn't what it's claimed to be and hope you get the word out. Thanks.

I have never understood the point in these things anyway

whats the idea, collect every cut up fabric patch from one of Bonds
jackets and get put it all back together, its a pointless waste of
screen used ( if they are acreen used ) outfits etc

I would sooner see the outfits in all their glory at a Bond exhibition
on a nice display, as opposed to being a little bit stuck onto a
    collectors card......

a complete and utter waste in my opinion, or better yet, just auction
off the outfits as a whole to collectors

I remember the carpet swatches being for sale, but never thought it was sufficiently cool to be in my collection. However, I could see why others might be interested in it. With regard to authenticity, this is one of the main reasons I advocate for people educating themselves about the things they collect. Auction houses are some of the worst offenders with respect to authenticity. Both the Christie's Bond catalogs had items that were not what they were purported to be. The bottom line is that auction houses are in it for bottom line, money. Same thing goes for card peddlers, action figure peddlers etc. So, as
I've said in the past, "Caveat Emptor", let the buyer beware.

I don't understand this post. Your uncle bought the boat, stripped the carpet and sold the carpet to the Ian Flemming foundation correct? So how do you know this carpet is not a piece of the carpet your uncle sold? Your post makes it sound like the only true LALD boat carpet is the one currently installed in the boat.
  • BenSV650BenSV650 Posts: 236MI6 Agent
No, I think what he means is that his uncle replaced the carpet in the boat and then sold the whole boat to the Ian Flemming Foundation. The IFF then started trying to sell pieces of the new carpet as they believed it was the original carpet from when the boat was used during filming.

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

The thing about it is that these pieces of carpet are indeed selling, not just up for sale forever.

Good god, do people really buy bits of an old carpet that used to be on a boat in a film ? Its worse than I first suspected. There must be treatment for this sort of thing.

This is a genuine end cap off a cardboard tube used to post several transfers to me.

I cut off the end, leaving not one, two, or three, but ALL FOUR staples intact.

It's anyone's for £5 plus p&p, plus handing charge of two winegums and a stick of rock.

I'll even draw an X on it in sharpie for an extra 50p

Sorry Jeff but after looking at the photos it seems your item is not 100% genuine. Please don't take it personally, and I know you probably didn't know yourself, but, genuine transfer cardboard tubes always come with 4 stainless steel staples and this one looks to have one dodgy staple that could be tin sprayed up to look like stainless. The keen eyes amongst us will also have spotted that the brown wrapper should be biscuit brown and this one is dogger brown and hence its clearly a fake. In fact, I am putting it to you that you have gone out of your way to make this item yourself and hence its a fake. On that basis its not worth anything like the £5.00 you are looking for and I will only offer £4.95. Have you got any carpet bits going beggin ? Sadly its the only shag pile I see these days.

Old post, but these shams are still selling out there. Here is one from ebay. I contacted the seller who bought it from the Ian Flemming foundation at an event that showcased Bond boats. There is a picture of him with the boat. He still went ahead and sold it anyway.

Thanks for posting here. My memory may be faulty, Chris, but I believe the IFF closed sales of the carpeting while still selling the genuine ballast balls from the FYEO submersible, so they must have responded?

The IFF was raising dollars to go back towards buying/maintaining/repairing vehicles. The IFF is a nonprofit foundation with founding board members like Raymond Benson, Fleming heirs and other luminaries.

Interesting and thanks for posting, but you are including auctions like the Christie's 50th? I thought all the 50th auction lots came from Meg and staff straight to Christie's, no middle man . . . ? Which items weren't right?

    Thanks.

He's referring to the '98 and '01 catalogs both of which were rife with misrepresented pieces.
