The "Inside" Documentaries

The 007 Ultimate Edition, and I believe Special Edition as well, includes documentaries on the films. These documentaries are mostly narrated by Patrick Macnee. In my opinion, they are one of the greatest things a Bond fan can have access too. They provide insides of all sorts of topics from the casting to the musical scores. For those who have seen the documentaries, what are your thoughts?

Yes i have this collection & seen all the documentaries. I think they are very good and give a good insight into the casting of each film. It also tells you about incidents which affecting certain scenes or problems off set. Like Roger Moore's stunt-double being badly injured when hanging on to the train in Octopussy. The sky-diver who did his own unauthorised jump off the Eiffel Tower around the time they filmed May-Day's double in AVTAK for this scene. He was sacked. plus brief footage of screen tests & how different people were cast in their roles. Also highlighting the after-success of each film. OHMSS is interesting as it clearly shows the path of how Lazenby was cast, spotted & eventually got the role. It really does piece it together. Licence to kill had fascinating problems on set in Mexico for the truck scenes. The stretch of road used was haunted & caused many inexplicable occurences. it was quite creepy really. The trucks seemed to have a mind of their own at times & caused danger for the crew. Dalton himself was in danger on one occasion. For such a great long sequence, you'd never have guessed all the extra problems that came with it.

I agree, though I haven't seen them all. FRWL was very good, the problems overcome such as the problems filming the last two action scenes, and reordering early Spectre scenes so they made sense, with a bit of jiggerypokery in the editing.

It's really amazing because these documentaries bring out things that the viewer would never even stop to think about, like the editing for example.

I love these documentaries. They are so much better than the stuff which appears on the newer Bond films, which have a promotional feel to them. The 'Inside' documentaries, however, are simply the story of how the film was made. And the range of cast and crew interviewed is impressive - although the lack of Connery and Dalton (apart from old interviews) is a drawback.

For some reason whenever i try to watch any of these my screen just goes black, but i can still hear the audio. I don't know why, because all the other special features work. I've really wanted to watch these documentaries for a while, and unfortunately my setup (PS3 and a computer monitor) is my only way of watching blu-rays.

The reason why these are so well done are two names: John Cork and Bruce Scivally. Their book James Bond The Legacy is the single best nonfiction book on 007.

The making of The Spy Who Loved Me 1976 Documentary over 2 hours in 16 parts. Don't miss Moore and Maurice Binder shooting the gunbarrel scene in the first video. Not on any Bond special feature DVD.

Just found this on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTWguaAiecM

Does anyone think the John Cork/Bruce S documentaries, or ones of that quality will ever be re-done in extended length?

What I found particularly great about those documentaries is that they didn't hide from serious aspects such as poor performances from actors or the films commercially.

They are amazing. Fantastic making of documentaries. Very detailed, great interviews with almost everybody involved. For them to be perfect, it would have been so cool have Sean Connery and Timothy Dalton participate.

They really put you in the team of a Bond movie with funny anecdotes and stories.

I wish they would add new insights, the actors aren't getting any younger. We are losing crew and cast members every year, but fascinatingly we still have all main Bond and Bond Girl actors. I wonder if John Cork is still doing any Bond work?

The new documentaries, if you can call them that, are horrendous. I think people have too short attention spans to see through long documentaries these days.

There's a lot of footage of the cast and crew giving their insights about the films. I honestly think we've heard almost as much as we possibly could from them. I know that if they put Roger Moore in front of the camera, he'll find a way to repeat what he has said before, no matter what questions are thrown at him. At least we have three books from him.

Just watched that 3 hour Making of TSWLM on YouTube. Pretty special experience really, while one or two of them are a bit boring (it was made for film school) the level of detail is fascinating.

Ken Adam is a genius. I also admire Lewis Gilbert more after seeing this.

    Totally agree on this, they are very good -{

Until I re-invested in the two-disc Ultimate Editions I had never seen them. Never even knew they existed.

^ Yeah I had seen the on the "special editions" that were released on VHS and DVD, the ones with the Gold colouring insert (single disc DVD).

They did some other features too, about the music, special effects, Ken Adam, Peter Lamont, Terence Young etc.

That's true. Surely EON has other footage not previously released that they could add, such as the deleted scene in QoS featuring White's death!!! Would be interesting given he's alive in the current timeline
