what I find interesting is, that Moore-bashing seems to be very popular here on the board, but as soon as someone expresses some negative opinions about Dalton, 3 mods show up to defend him

Dalton - the weak and weepy Bond!
Hey, I love Sir Roger Moore. For me second to Sir Sean Connery in terms of awesomeness and sheer escapism entertainment.
But I'm not jumping into Moore bashings. (which topic to pick?) Got real tired of that. Too many pit bulls defending Ian Fleming's Jamaican lawn. Hard feelings to steer far away from.
I don't think he'd want me to constantly defend him anyhow. Best bet is a toast and an email expressing thanks for the memories.
I just watched LTK and I really don't like him as Bond...a bit to wimpy
Any others agree?
This HAS to be the first time I've seen Dalton criticized as wimpy. No disrespect meant or anything, since we all have differing interpretations of films, but one of LTK's criticisms from those who've not read Ian Fleming is that Dalton's Bond was way too intense and even sadistic at times. I should note that having read Fleming, I really disagree and like the job Dalton did.

Glad you're smilin' when you say that. I don't think any of us mods had our mod hats on when we chimed in--we were all talking as Bond fans first and foremost! But as for the "tears in his eyes". . .yes, his eyes sometimes appear moist, but that isn't crying or being weepy. Hell, I could argue that Dalton's allergies could have been acting up in those scenes--but that would just be silly.
well, his allergies seem to happen only and instantly when he's "in rage" or sees Kara. Maybe, it's her EdT Anyhow, Interesting medical case, I guess....
Regarding the mod thing, I have that theory

Well, he wasn't John Carradine or The Shat. But I remember discussing this same topic with MBE, (remember her?) and she did mention his puppy eyes during the amusement ride.
But I'll still take Dalton over Craig any time. Daniel's Red Grant, not James Bond.
Really like the Red Grant comment, and although I don't quite agree with you I can see what you are getting at. Now that I have (mostly) got over how miscast he is I am surprised by how an effective Bond he could be. I think that he can be more than Red Grant if he allowed to be, and he is a good enough actor to pull it off. I really hope he looses the thug on PCP thing and demonstrates the kind of class that Dalton ( the most fully realised Bond for me) exhibited from the get go.
I don't want to convince anyone and I don't have to. Everyone else to be his own judge. My mission is just to put some counterweight into the Dalton-hype here on AJB - which I never understood. I was quietly embarrassed at the time when he was presented as Bond - not an easy time to out yourself as a Bond fan then -{
Dalton-hype ? No Bondtoys....I think you need to untwist your knickers again....you don't like him - fine....just for the record...is there a Bond actor you actually like ?

I have tried to figure out what it is about Dalton that I don't like ( I love all bonds but I think he is my least favorite and I really wanted to like him as Bond ). My favorite bonds are the more realistic ones like OHMSS and FRWL. So you would figure I would be a Dalton guy, but I have come to the conclusion that something is missing with him. The one thing Bond has is Charm, and I just don't think Dalton has it. Dalton seems like a bit of a weasel to me in his other non Bond roles. I almost think he would have made a better Bond villain. But I would have liked to have seen LTK with the same big budget that was put into the other ones. By the time of LTK MGM & UA were really in bad shape financially . Maybe just like Joe Don Baker made a better Bond side kick than bad guy, maybe Dalton would have been better as a Bond villain. Just one mans opinion.
I love Dalton as Bond, but would have really liked to see some of that evil charm that he brought to the Rocketeer, or even Hot Fuzz. Big Tam had it in spades , even Lazenby had it in embryo, and DC could do it very well indeed. Just maybe, Dalton in his determination to e 'Flemingesque' threw a little of the baby out with the bath water. DC is in slight danger of doing the same, but will I feel really hit his stride in 23.
Dalton is also my favourite Bond but feel with his Bond movies, the producers/writers still didn't want to make a complete break from the Moore era. Hence some of the silly scenes more at home with Sir Rogers tenure, the chello chase down the mountain is as bad as the gorilla outfit in Octopussy. Still feel he could of at least done a Third, where he might of really put his take on Bond.

From what I recall TLD was written with, maybe not Roger in mind, but certainly an extension of the type of actor he is...then Pierce got the part, then lost it...then Tim got it and the script was 'revised' to take out as many of the 'silly scenes' as possible, and give it a 'tougher' edge...but as filming needed to start, only so much could be changed/dispensed with....just check the deleted scenes to see what else was cut...LTK was written with Dalton in mind....hence the far tougher/stripped back script....I'm with you about the third, Thunderpussy...and with a change of director too...

I Loved Dalton in Hot Fuzz, he even had some charm at the end of the Tourist. I have been re watching the Dalton bond Films and I like alot of things he does, but I thought he had much more screen presence in Hot fuzz then he did as Bond. In hot fuzz, for example, he steals every scene he is in and his presence is unquestioned. Sometimes in his Bond Films I didn't always feel like he was the most dominate guy in the room. Also I think the film Bond really enjoys life and TD looked like he was getting a root canal through both films ( A good example is with both sean and rogers Bond you got the sense that they were very serious about making sure they got the right champagne, it mattered to them. With Dalton I always got the impression he didn't care about that stuff one way or another ) I agree that he sorta of got caught in the switches and it would have been nice to see a really big budget bond film made just for him. I can see though how more hardcore fans could really like him though. I just would have liked to scene a more fully sketched Bond performance from him I guess.
Dalton is just like Craig now, but in the late 80's. But audiences used to Moore didn't accept Tim so much. The Living Daylights was generally well received & successful but unfortunately LTK was unpopular in America & didn't appeal to many casual audiences used to lighter Bond flicks. Dalton's performance is excellent and i really like the film & many characters in it,plus the music. But it wasn't deemed a successful Bond film & box office. It's kind of ironic that Daniel Craig's Bond is praised & liked for doing much the same approach as Dalton took it (nearly 20 years earlier). Dalton's Bond rarely seemed to be having fun (and i think this aspect is disliked by many). But Dalton's 007 was a no-nonsense determined agent who got the job done. i think his Bond was more likely to relax & enjoy life (after missions) but not with unfinished business. Now from a film (on screen) point of view, some people found Dalton's Bond too serious and realistic. For me he can't be faulted for being realistic. But even a lack of humour doesn't bother me. Films like 'From Russia with love', OHMSS, TLD, LTK & Casino Royale all very serious. You get the odd bit of subtle humour in the script but they are serious spy thrillers (action) films. I love the tension & suspense in these films. I think Dalton will always be my favourite along with Connery & Craig. Bond 23 is massive for Craig. 'Casino Royale' was excellent but QOS one of the worst Bond films. So the next one really needs to be good to keep Craig's tenure on the up.

US$ 1 for everytime, when I am reading about "casual audiences" in the context with Dalton and his acceptance and I'll be a very rich man 8-)
Like I have previously said, I welcome Craig's job very much but I still can't stand the man Dalton.

Have you seen this? I like the shark version very much! ( and farts work always )
The 'casual audiences' point does carry weight. I know many people who enjoy a Bond film every now & then and would probably regard themselves a Bond fan. But in truth many of these people can't even name the last 5 or 6 films in order! or have much knowledge/memory as to who played Bond at certain times! These are major basics which many 'casual Bond audiences' don't know. It is these type of people who don't even remember Dalton's films. That in itself is complete ignorance, as any real fan would know the films so well whether they like some or not. What you have to realise is that Bond is a bit like the 'Man Utd' of film characters. It has fans all over the place/world. Many who claim to be 'so-called Bond fans' just as you get the Man Utd glory hunters who've never even been to games! - It is quite common for most men to say they like Bond films. Unfortunately the problem you get is that these people can be quick to give opinions on the best Bond. - but i will only take the views of people who know the Bond films well - proper fans. Some i know, but plenty who don't. The type of Bond fans i've mentioned will either choose a Connery or Moore. (or Brosnan or Craig) Craig as he is current. Dalton & Lazenby just don't appeal to 'casual audiences' or (glory-hunters) as i liken them to!
