A second remake of Thunderball

It was talked about for years. As early as the spring of 1984 but it never happened.

    Sadly any remake of Thunderball would have to stick very closley to the origional story, or Eon's lawyers would be all over them . I'm guessing there's a limited market for the same film being remade too many times. And I was never a fan of NSNA. :))

    Even that can't happen now as Eon have aquired the rights to Thunderball/NSNA/and any plot outlines that were once held by Kevin McClory...

    Many titles were mentioned....James Bond of the Secret Service - Warhead - Warhead2000 being the ones I can remember off the top of my head....

    They do indeed...they also got the rights to the '67 version of CR (and the rights to the story), hence why they could then make CR themselves....it happened when Sony wanted the rights to Spiderman...

    This was speculated back when Eon acquired the rights to both CR & NSNA...as they also got the rights to all scripts/ideas/musings that Fleming, Whittingham and McClory came up with at the time...if I remember, and memory fades for me now :)) , Eon stated they wouldn't bring Blofeld back....but things can change...

    I am glad that nothing ever came of this, I just watched Never Say Never Again on DVD again and I found it to be pretty poor when compared to Thunderball. Also I highly doubt after the lackluster performance of NSNA that any one would spend money on trying a second remake.

    When McClory was kicking around the second remake, he was seeking Timothy Dalton for Bond. I must admit, I'd have been thrilled to see it. Even if the movie sucked, it would be fun to see Dalton as Bond just one more time, and Thunderball is one of my favorite Connery's. Still, he tried it, it was moderately successful, and it was time to let it go.

    They should just stop remaking films full stop. It's doing my head in. So many films have remakes and sequels to the point of it being ridiculous. Even the Poseidon adventure has a sequel and a remake for crying out loud. What bloody doesn't? X-(

    Interesting, apart from the first (which goes back to Fleming etc. in 1959) I'd not heard of those other two.

    Wow I read that and another collection of notes about the Thunderball lawsuit. Kevin Mcclory made a complete @ss out of himself over this. I mean he cowrote one screenplay with 4 other people and parades around like he was the sole creator of Thunderball. While I think the Eon's Thunderball is a strong entry in the franchise, its not the end all be all of James Bond stories and movies.

    No remake please. It was done once well already. NSNA is an inferior remake itself. Warhead 2000 I would've watched if Dalton was Bond but still you can't have a film series remaking the same movie over and over.

    It is getting ridiculous, as if Hollywood has completely run out of ideas. The Poseidon Adventure was a good movie. Not a great one, but entertaining and well cast with some great faces like Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, and Roddy McDowall. It didn't need a remake. Most films remade didn't need one. Like the "Halloween" remake. They gave that to a director that has to make every good guy a total @sshole and create sympathy for a villain that you absolutely should have no sympathy for. I sat through the sequel, and I have to say, when you can take the kindly Dr. Loomis character that Donald Pleasence essayed so well for all those original films and turn him into a character that I was actually glad was killed off by the villain, you've completely done it wrong.

    Mcclory was a Skidmark on the Underwear of the Franchise. Just because he couldn't let the whole Thunderball Business go.

    As for Timothy Dalton being in the second Thunderball remake, I believe he turned down the offer out of respect to Cubby Broccoli and he did not feel a strong need to come back as James Bond.

    I know that the various protracted legal wrangles associated with McClory's designs on Bond took their toll, and that the behind-the-scenes story of NSNA isn't a particularly happy one, but I enjoy NSNA and, in 1983, I appreciated its difference in style to the original TB and to OPY. NSNA is witty and well performed, certainly up to Fatima's death. After then it drags a little, slowing to an unmemorable climax. But the first two thirds are entertaining enough. Dalton was wise not to involve himself in any further remake. He was a great Bond but the project would probably have had a straight-to-DVD feel about it.
    Critics and material I don't need. I haven't changed my act in 53 years.
