The TD hype has the follwoingt reasons in my opinion:
Most of the TD fanboys did not experience 80's cinema such as Star Wars, Smokey the Bandit and stuff. Therefore, they don't understand the entertainment concept of the later Moore Bonds. None of them can really imagine, that the cinema was the only place, where you could watch 007 and none was really interested in realistic action movies. They where looking for crackers - the bigger the better!
Additionally, the contrast between admittedly silly Moore movies and the more serious approach is significant and together with today's "realistic" concepts, it's welcome.
What many TD fans forget in my opinion is, that the fact, that Dalton SAID, that he wanted to doe a hard-edged Bond does not necessarily mean, that he PERFORMED a hard-edged Bond. I for my part find his interpretation pretty "naive" and "romantic" especially when he gets emotionally involved (--> see my contributions to his tears and weeping in the "wimpy Bond" thread).
Many claim, that Dalton did his own stunts. He may have been strapped on the Landie but everyone who knows a bit about movie production knows, that a main actor simply can't perform his own stunts. If he gets injured, it will cost big $$ because the entire production comes to a stop.

Dalton - the weak and weepy Bond!
That's a great line... and I never realised until now it was a quip. Either cos I wasn't aware of the phrase at the time, or Dalton's lousy comic timing.
This thread is a perfect example of why I don't use online forums that much anymore. Certain posters just had to hijack the thread to reiterate their loathing of Timothy Dalton. What's the point? Why not just let those who wanted to quote some of their favorite TD lines do so in peace?
Roger Moore is my least favorite Bond, but if someone started a 'Best Moore Quotes' thread, I wouldn't use it to bash Moore. I hated MR, but if someone started a 'Great Things About MR' thread, I'd just sit back and let the MR fans have their fun.
Some threads are all about debate, discussion, and argument. Some are not. It's a shame so many posters can't seem to tell the difference.

For me Dalton is the best Bond. Such a shame he only had two movies. I personally like his grittier portrayal as Bond but I still think he delivers his lines well when it comes to delivering humour.
1.On Her Majesties Secret Service 2.The Living Daylights 3.license To Kill 4.The Spy Who Loved Me 5.Goldfinger

"He Got The Boot." and "He met his Waterloo" from The Living Daylights are two other great lines. Also I really enjoyed Dalton's delivery of Bond's line to M "I guess its.... A farewell to arms." in Licence To Kill. The way he speaks it is very commanding.

Above is his Living Daylights review, quite damning about Dalton in the final round-up: "Tell me those aren't the eyes of a psychopath..."

I'm not offended one bit by this. I just find it funny.

"I'll be back in an hour... make that two" works great for Connery, but Dalton's humor is darker and more sarcastic.
