You need to check your hidden coins, there is something inside the case that is eating the plating and causing corrosion on the coins, I have replaced the coins once, but it seems to be happening again, my advice would be not to store the coin strips in the hidden compartment, if you haven't got any corrosion, then I think you have been lucky, I know of 3 others than the 1 I have that have gone like it -{

No I'd have to disagree on that surmise, sorry!
Come on Danjaq, own up you've been using the blasted leather coin strips as flexible friend butt plugs...anything would be corroded after that mystery journey...ewwwwwwww!
Now seriously, the question still remains how brass can "cross-contaminate" a gold surface.
My feeling is, that the goldplating is not really a complete protection and that the coper plating of the coins corrodes somehow.

To solve this problem there should be nickel, before gold plating.
Now we must also remember that those bullet tubes are made of brass which contains copper also.
Does this make any sense 8-)

I am asking myself, if the contaminated copper "grows" over the plating then as the plating should technically not tarnish.
Has someone tried to clean the sovereigns with a silver polishing cloth?

spanking strap :v I will show you when I visit Donk
NO, this has happened to two sets of mine, Im know that there are others out there having the same problem.

The goldplating has visibly tarnished, but it's still more goldish than brown on mine....

how about its the leather? tanning leather can be done all sorts of ways, many involving some pretty harsh chemicals.
maybe some trace element of these chemicals remains in the leather, and over time is reacting with the base metals of the shillings?
from previous experience, gold plating brass is ideal done after plating in nickel, and i've heard gold can be soft to a point it's porous.
just a thought like

I would go along with this Singe, but when they are stored in the tray they are ok, it is only when the are put in the hidden compartment and seems worse the end closest to the brass bullet tubes, plus there is no leather in the compartment.
I tend to follow MG on this, but Teppo, I still love you

it would me a bit of a **** if it is the leather, how can we get around this, replaying shilling aint cheap
That will remain my shecret, Mishta Bond!

Teppo – I would have to agree… but Gold itself would not get the corrosion… a simple way to put it… use gold sovereigns and not plated….
