It reminded me of when Kirk was falling off the mountain in the beginning of Star Trek V. A little better, but not much. I still hate that shot, but not the concept.
As with the whole movie, I thought the PTS was a mixed bag. Overall, the cinematography and camera work made it look really cheap to me -- like something from a cable TV movie of the time -- and the bluescreen effects were questionable.
The whole bathroom bit was kind of weird and disgusting, though now that I've come to accept Martin Campbell's penchant for filming in mensrooms, I'm not nearly as bothered by it. For the first half, Brosnan did not impress me. He seemed more a generic action hero than James Bond. The dialogue seemed forced and cheesy.
It got better at the point Brosnan says "Obviously." The camerawork is better, the staging more interesting. Even the dialogue seems less cheesy. At that point, it started to feel more like a Bond film. But then there was that moment with Brosnan "flying" to reach the airplane . . . and I had to hold my head in shame. I started thinking of Captain Kirk falling from the mountain in that awful Star Trek movie. That Brosnan was playing it completely straight made it worse. I couldn't even laugh at it as a joke. All this combined with Eric Serra's underwhelming score made me feel like Goldeneye was an imitator and not a real Bond movie.

A pity they didn't film the GOLDENEYE stunt with real freefallers like this video (& MOONRAKER before it). You didn't really need to see Brosnan's face to sell it. The brilliance of the stunt itself is the selling point. It's still a pretty good opening sequence though.

Agree 100%, The stunt sells itself -{ , I think it's a given most of the cinema audience have an Idea it's not really
the actor doing those Big, Big stunts. )

I love the GoldenEye PTS. The atmosphere is great, the bungee jump is great. I like Bond's introduction, first showing hands and posture of Bond, a close up of the eye, and in his first words his face. (something they should have done with craig too). When watching the movie I never thought the stunt was impossible (it's not Die another day surf scene). I love GoldenEye opening, one of the best in the series.

When you look back at Goldeneye, there are serious issues/flaws within the PTS, yet seem to go unnoticed in many fans reviews. The opening despite having suspense and action is almost enough to fail the film! What with Trevelyan being shot at point-blank with the facility blown up - survives for later in the story. Also the most stupid scene ever with Bond flying into the plane, literally impossible. total nonsense. I mean granted the sky-dive on the dam was a great stunt. But why is this film liked by so many? For me it is not even a top-10 Bond film.Probably 14th on my list. I actually prefer TWINE to this film. Goldeneye is a middle of range action film.
hahaha, love seeing old threads come back to life again. To paraphrase the opening post, "why can't the majority of people see the obvious? Oh, maybe it's because they lack my genius insight!" What's really flabergasting is how much bandwidth that opening post has gained; so what's more stupid? The question that should be asked, are there more PTS that are plausible than those that are not? Why would a competent operative willingly become a Bond decoy to get himself killed by Grant in FRWL? Why does Bond need to peel the plastique explosives in GF? Why did Jacques Bouvard need to masquerade as his own widow in TB? Were the HK police in the gag that Bond was only playing dead in YOLT and if yes, why was any of that play acting necessary at all if they had the means to fabricate the reporting of the event? Why wasn't Bond seething mad when hunting Blofeld in DAF? Jump forward to SF, how did Bond survive the PTS in that movie? I bet no one has asked that one before, in this thread or any other? )

To fill in the plot hole/inconsistency of GoldenEye's PTS with Trevelyan's staged death and the gun battle - maybe all of the rounds in Ourumov's pistol were blanks and even the rounds for the chemical weapon facility's guards could've been loaded with blanks as well and they were all in on Trevelyan's ruse? And blank rounds at close range can still wound and kill (while it's suspicious why none of the barrels and piping in the chemical weapon facility rupture after many AK rounds were fired).
Bond falling after that nose diving plane was bad because it was done with shoddy visual effects (taking us out of the movie, like that floppy CGI paragliding Brosnan in Die Another Day),
