What sort of Cologne does Bond wear?

by the way, anybody knows what Vesper uses? it seems that Bond went through her purse and found a bottle of something...

No reference to it, he doesn't wear Bonn or Frankfurt either. Actually he doesn't much care for Germany, it's a kink of Fleming's.

In the book FRWL I think, he derides male perfume to Tatiana saying 'We wash...' Bond was formed in the 1950s, ration book era, and this sort of thing would have been a step too far, added to which you can't really sell it onscreen as you can't smell it. Of course, Wint or Kidd has his aftershave, it brought about their downfall, so from a spying perspective it has its drawbacks.

I thought he wore Floris No. 89 based on Fleming's own words. And Vesper in Casino Royale used Santa Maria Novella’s Melograno (in the film at least)

Floris is mentioned in the novels, but not no. 89 specifically. In Dr. No there was Floris Lime bath essence for men (and Guerlain bathcubes for women) in the bathroom in the "Minked-Lined Prison". Like Napoleon Plural said, in FRWL Bond claims he doesn't wear Cologne. So the original novels do not mention any cologne wore by Bond. However, they do contain a few references to perfumes for (Bond)women. I believe Vesper wore Vent Vert by Pierre Balmain (1947) but maybe I'm mistaking, it could be another Bond girl from a different novel.

As for the Bond movies.... I think we'll have to wait for the "Super Ultimate Smell-O-Vision Blu Ray Collection"

Who wears cologne here? I shower daily, use a squirt of anti-perspiration under the arm pits and that's it. My wife bought me some expensive aftershave when we met fifteen years ago, and I've still got some left!

I don't normally, but I don't think sweat is much an issue as you generally don't spray it in high sweat areas and, at least many of us, spend the day in a climate controlled environment. On top of that, there are plenty of universally acceptable scents that many will love and the few who don't can still smell it without being offended.

Just spray appropriately. Don't be "cologne guy" at the office. But if a coworker reaches past you to get a paper or you walk by them swiftly, then maybe they'll catch the scent and in that mild way it can be plenty nice.

Wow! thx! i couldnt make it out myself.

unfortunately, my fave cologne cannot touch my skin as it completely dissapears (its a very subtle fragrance), so i spray some on my shirt and sleeves and it works just fine.

floris No 89? anybody knows what this smell compares to in more available fragrances?

what about Vesper's perfume, any idea what this smells like or is similar to?

For sure Bond would not wear a heavy cologne. I hate those strong overpowering colognes for men. A spy would not want people catching his scent when he's around.

I found out Vesper's from here on the forums somewhere. I believe I have read that both are traditional scents, rather than anything modern.

Cologne or perfume is very important to get right if one wears it. Some scents don't work with a person's body chemistry. To this day, I still recall smelling the delicate perfume of a beautiful woman. It was a magical moment like those perfume ads.

Oh, and Anne Hathaway should be amazing in the next Batman movie. They finally have an elegant woman in the series.

I totally agree... he would either wear something very light (for some reason I think something like 4711... Love that smell.) or something quite generic... so as to not to stand out. (Although Bond and generic don't seem to go hand in hand ) )

Personally, I love it when a man wears cologne... especially if it is subtle, and is right for them. You shouldn't be able to smell it on them, unless you're up close... :v

Nothing like having a bottle of it... to use on myself... when bf isn't around... so it reminds you of them...

scent is such a part of the woman's dynamic. the right perfume can make her doubly or quadruply attractive. its part of the memory she leaves with you.

a few years back i met a tall woman in her late 50's, very elegant, but did not consider her attractive in the same way i would a younger girl. when i went to kiss her cheek i got a whiff of her perfume and she instantly became one of the sexiest and most irresistible women i'd ever come across...(needless to say im no longer age biased)

Anne Hathaway went from being apple juice to expensive Champagne precisely due to her elegance. what an intruiguing and sexy woman...

I think its pretty well done. One of the better fragrance ads around. She looks great in it.

EDIT: So, my understanding now is that Bond from Fleming's books would not wear fragrance, or it would be near-nothing? What about the different film Bonds? I say Moore's definitely. Craig I think might, but it would be to have a definite scent in a finer strand of luxury, rather than for any cover or backup or issue with his other product's scents.

So what about film Bonds?

Connery Bond - would probably wear 'smoky' fragrance like Armani Man for ex.

Roger Moore - something very 'classic' by Ralph Lauren perhaps? Ralph Lauren (green bottle ) or Safari comes to mind, or Obsession by CK.

DAlton - something light, Bvlgari?

Brosnan - i have no idea what this one would wear

Craig - something very light comes to mind, Acqua di Gio?

Maybe Flemming did write this, but Fleming sure as hell didn't.

The Domino Effect

In OHMSS, Fleming writes that Bond "...went into the bathroom and cleaned himself up - amused to notice that the soap was that most English of soaps, Pears Transparent, and that there was a bottle of Mr Trumper's 'Eucris' beside the very masculine brush and comb by Kent." However, this was not Bond's choice but rather had been provided by Draco.

As others have mentioned, on at least two occasions, Fleming wrote of Bond's disdain for cologne.

Eucris is a hair product rather than a cologne. It's a pomade which I believe is a gloss-inducing product ( if that's the right way to describe it)

Btw, surely Bond does wear cologne - Floris No. 89?

There actually is a Eucris cologne, but most people believe - as you correctly state C&D - that Fleming was referring to the pomade as it was very popular at the time. As for Floris 89, I've never done the digging but again, it's my understanding that although Fleming mentions it - and it's certainly synonymous with Bond - there's no actual mention of Bond using it, just that it's 'there'. Could be wrong on the latter, but think that's correct.
