Actually Oscar, although generally credited to the English at Plymouth (current Massachusetts) in 1621, it is argued, some say convincingly, by the likes of Dr. Michael Gannon, Robyn Gioia and others that the earliest such celebration was held in Saint Augustine Florida, September 8th 1565, by the Spanish expedition lead by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés.

As my colleague, a history professor, likes to point out, the modern American Thanksgiving was actually established by Abraham Lincoln in 1863 to commemorate the Union victories (and horrific human losses on both sides) at Vicksburg and Gettysburg. . .the Pilgrim connection is actually artificial. Well, whatever, Happy Thanksgiving, fellow Yanks. . .and, for the rest of you, Happy Thursday!

I like the idea of Thanksgiving. American friends of mine tell me it's all about the dinner, the football and family. No presents being swapped.Every holiday in Britain has become a commercial event now.

Don't romanticize us too much, secretagent. . .us Yanks invented the crass over-commercialization of holidays! The day after Thanksgiving has become known as "Black Friday," when retailers sell products at enormous discounts, and it serves as the official start to the Christmas shopping season. Stores open very early that day--5:00 a.m., 4:00 a.m., and, increasingly, midnight or even 8:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving itself. People begin lining up (or "queuing up") outside the stores often days before the event--bringing tents, cooking gear, portable televisions--all to be the first ones in to sweep up those great Black Friday deals. And, to many, this is their Thanksgiving tradition!

I spent four hours cooking dinner for myself and my folks today. what an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon!!

Speaking of traditions, SyFy did a decent Bondathon this year.
I love making the dinner and glancing up at the TV from time to time to see which Bond is doing what in what move right now.
We cook the turkey in a smoker, so there's a fair amount of drink hoisting standing around the smoker while it cooks.
You have to keep an eye on that thing you know. It's thirsty work.
