'Ben Whishaw as Q? They must be [censored] joking! SkyFall is beginning to sound much TOO clever for its own good! 'Classic Bond' I think not.'
Anyone see this, I have to agree,. I very much Doubt Skyfall will be anything close to a classic Bond.
Still I sure Daniel, Sam and all their loooooooovie Friends will have a Ball making it. )
I can only hope a Pleb like me will be able to pick up all those subtle nuances
Stil I sure some Condesending, Partonising reply will explane it all to me.When it gets released.

I'm a traditionalist and usually quite adverse to change but I dont see a problem here. As long as they keep the character quite serious I'll be happy.
I am sure, that he'll be able to pull off a reasonable Q like Benedict Ciumberbatch was able to convince as a very young Sherlock Holmes with a very bad haicut.....
President of the 'Misty Eyes Club'.
Dalton - the weak and weepy Bond!
I don't know anything about the actor, so I'll trust Eon's judgement...I'm just glad to have the character back. The last two films were lacking a tad too many elements to give it a 'Bond' feel for me (the misplaced gunbarrels, no bombastic James Bond themes throughout, no gadgets, etc.). Knowing Q is returning as a character gets me a little more pumped for Skyfall.

Going by his google images. If he's going to play Q he's going to need a haircut.
Funny, when I read "Carte Blanche," the mental picture I had of the gadget-meister, "Sanu Hirani," resembled Ben Whishaw with the unkempt hair.

I somewhat agree with Daren, just glad to have Q back. I'd prefer a traditional "older" Q, but a younger Q would bring as new perspective to the franchise that I haven't seen and I'll wait and see what it brings.
What I like about the casting is that it makes viewers largely avoid making a comparison. To most people, Desmond Llewelyn was, is, and always will be the definitive Q. I think poor John Cleese had to labor under that burden: even though he was supposed to be a different character, he was close enough to the original Q (in being tall, eccentric, and old enough to be Bond's father) that some people couldn't help but grumble, "Who the hell does he think he is?" Whishaw is so different from Llewelyn that, perhaps, like every new actor who plays Doctor Who, viewers won't expect him to be just like his predecessors and will just look at the new things he brings to the role.
I think you make a great point Hardyboy. To cast someone that is as far removed from the original Q as possible EoN at least avoided the usual "everything was better in the past" comparisons.
I really like the 2 comparisons we've had from people here...
The younger and brilliant Matt Smith as Dr Who (who I thought would be crap... looking at his pic, but is now my Ultimate Dr) and the genius casting of Benedict Cumberbatch - who's take on Sherlock is again, brilliant... (btw... when is the next series of that on... anyone know?)
So I think this casting could be v.clever - and on trend so to speak.
I think he's going to be surprising... and in a good way
But for purists... maybe not. Ah well... can't please them all... )

I have bad feelings about this choice. I think this Q will be like the gadget types in Alias and Mission: Impossible 3. I hope not but that's my feeling. The producers attempt to refresh things mean going after the younger generation who don't know much about or like previous Bond movies. That's why we have this Bond inspired by Bourne stuff going on now. I hope I'm wrong.

I think that's a very general and sweeping statement there Silentspy that excludes anyone under the age of what...30, 40? So, young people don't have the knowledge and they dislike all the previous Bonds?
Really? Wow.....Bond is/should be only for people in their 40's and over....??

I have previously stated I preferred the Q character not be brought back and I stand by those thoughts. Desmond was Q, so rather than create a new Q, I would have created an entirely new character to provide the gadgets. However, Eon has decided to bring back "Q" so we will have to see how it turns out.
My only other comment is in response to a previous post where it was mentioned this is a re-boot so we will be seeing the young Q. Sorry, you can't go there because this Q will be younger than Bond so it can't possible fit within the previous Bond story lines.
My policy is to wait and see. Ben Whishaw would not have been my first choice either (I thought either Stephen Fry or Hugh Laurie would have been appropriate choices) but I'll be the first to admit it, I had reservations about Craig in the role of 007 and I ate humble pie after the first five minutes of Casino Royale so, I'll wait and see and hope that Mendes, Broccoli and Wilson know what they're doing.

as many seem to believe that Youth is the sign of understanding tec, then 77007 is right, Justin Bieber would of been a better choice as Q.
After all what did the likes of old foggies like the late Steve Jobs or Bill gates know about computers and all that modern tec stuff.
Although given that Q is a Quartermaster ( he just gathers the equipment and issues it ). I think many think Q invents all the gadgetry so needs to be a computer geek. which is a slightly stereotypical character.
will we also get, a french character in a stripped shirt with onions round his neck, a german in laderhosen, or a fat loud American in offensive Hawaiian shirts, although come to think of it we might of already had some of those. )

It might be a general and sweeping statement but I've noticed the overly used "dated" words when people talk about older Bond films. That they don't have enough action. That the action scenes aren't realistic. The films look old because of the different coloring techniques. Maybe one has to enjoy movies and not just want to go to movies to really get older films. If that makes sense.

I'm in college and have loved them all for years. Maybe I am a somewhat exception, but my just slightly older brother loves them all too, as does my closest friend who has the same birthday as me. We may not have been old enough to even see all of Brosnan's in theaters, but all the films are still present enough to grow up loving and enjoying them. I remember when I first got my Xbox and HDTV setup, I rushed to rent Dr. No in HD. It was a beauty.
I think plenty of people are familiar with them, but perhaps you are right that they are trying to compete more with the modern summer blockbusters instead of the previous entries in the franchise.
I'm happy to reserve judgement until the film, but Whishaw is certainly an interesting choice. During the recent BBC miniseries in which he starred (The Hour), he played a somewhat intriguing, tetchy, thorough 50s style journalist. If he could bring some of that "annoyed scientist" to Q it could be worthy.
Now ... as for the reprise of Q, provided Eon concentrate on Q as a character to drive plot and not just a cheap method for inserting cheap jokes or lame CGI, I'll be content.

Amen. I loved the original Q, but he's not coming back. . .short of Gabriel blowing his horn. Let's move on!

But I grudgingly concede, cutting edge tech is today's youth. -{
