    "Well, Silva and Bond get a little 'friendly' in SF, they even sip a lil' whisky together on the shooting range."

    Actually, LeChiffre might be the friendliest Bond villain using those standards, I mean, he scratched Bond's balls for him. :))

    It has to be Scaramanga

    Scaramanga it is then. TMWTGG is the only Bond film where Bond kills a sole villain - Scaramanga himself. Noticably a much less violent film after DAF and LALD. -{

    Scaramanga might be the friendliest villain, but Hugo Drax is a close second. He is so polite during the entire film. More so than Scaramanga if you ask me.

    He's polite, but there's no respect at all to Bond. He treats him like he would an unpleasant bug. Scaramanga combines politeness with respect and I have to say, I get a little uncomfortable when Bond starts razzing him during the lunch scene. It's like, "Come on, James, he's been so NICE!" lol

    Zorin let Bond Sh*g Mayday ( His Girlfriend ), that was very Nice of him, I thought. :))

    See, that was another minor pleasure of AVTAK, the way Zorin sort of nodded and let May Day go ahead in spite of their being lovers. Unpredictable - but in the more serious Bonds, you'd see him look all enraged or hurt or some such thing, all very dreary.

    Funny, I thought of that more as a punishment. Way worse than what LeChiffe did to Bond in CR! :))

    Ernst Stavro Blofeld in DAF would have to be another contender - there's very little menace there and James Bond even laughs at his joke about Kansas; this from the murderer of his bride of a few hours, but then it's easier to see DAF as a direct sequel to YOLT in the Connery continuity, ignoring OHMSS altogether. That's the only way that that film really makes any sense at all! -{

    I see DAF as a Dream that Bond had when he was in Bed with the Italian Agent at the beginning of LALD.

    I suppose that's one way of explaining away this Bondian aberation, though quite whty Moore Bond becomes Connery Bond in his dream is beyond me...feelings of insecurity? :s

    ah now Diamonds Are Forever kinda makes sense! Roger was insecure that his "Bond, James Bond" would sound like Connerys.

    Exactly, Moore's on record as saying (in his LALD Diary) that he thought that it wold come out in a Scots accent a la Connery Bond. You surely need some way to explain the freakish nature of DAF, the poor relation James Bond film.

    I'm mildly surprised no one has suggested Valentin Zukovsky.
    Electra K said it herself. "Zukovsky really hated you!" Yet he and 007 shared drinks and worked together. Even Scaramanga didn't do that.

    True, but Zukovsky ultimately turned out to be more of an ally than a villain, don't you think?

    Yes. The "really hated you" remark was due to Electra not realizing what Zukovsky had just done. She thought his last act was shooting at Bond, when he was actually shooting Bond's shackles.

    That's a little embarrassing, I misread that all these years. I thought Electra spotted the damage but dismissed it as the catch had not snapped off.

    From that perspective I have to concede Zuckovsky was more ally than enemy in TWINE. Mr Coltrane was great as the character.

    Dunno, I read it the same as TB2. Valentin tries to shoot Bond in the knee to get back what he did years earlier, misses, smiles ruefully at Bond at not getting his last shot, Bond smiles warmly back as, after all Valentin is dying. But what he did do was in missing Bond's knee, accidentally shot his shackles.

    To me it was obvious that Valentin hit his target and Elektra misjudged the situation. Valentin knew the best way to get revenge for the death of his nephew was to free Bond and let him carry on his mission.

    Agreed. There are no shades of grey in that scene for me either. I think it's pretty clear cut. Zukovsky is a Bond ally, not a Bond villain.

    I agree also. Zukovsky knew he was dying, and knew he was finished. He lines up on Electra, but knows if he shoots her, Bond is stuck in the chair waiting for the next person that comes in to finish him off, or until the blast finishes him off. He couldn't walk over and free Bond from the shackles, so he did the only think he could do. Targeted one of the shackles so Bond could get a hand free, smiled at Bond to let him know he was saving him, then died. He knew all Bond needed was one hand free, and Bond did the rest. Elektra simply misread the information and assumed Zukovsky was trying to kill Bond.
