Spain made Italy look like England. Worse, really, cos England didn't cede 4 goals. It makes one glad of the importance of England topping their group, because otherwise they'd have met Spain, and it would have been a Germany 4 England 0 type wipeout all over again most likely. Or maybe Spain would have been coasting then, and just edged it, saving the best for last. Who knows?
It sort of feels humbling, because most of the Spanish players I've never even heard of, aside from Torres who seems to be the Heskey of the team allowed to score when everyone else has. Well, you know...
Andre Villas-Boas is the new manager of Tottenham. He is quoted, "For me, this is one of the most exciting coaching positions in the Premier League. This is a squad any coach would love to work with. Together I believe we can bring success in the seasons ahead."
Daniel Levy should play Blofeld. Mind you, Blofeld was a bit more enthusiastic and quick about building his alternative sites, he'd have had a new stadium up and running a darn sight quicker.
I have nothing against Spuzz - in fact I have been very keen for them to have succeeded in the past couple of seasons - but I really want them to slide into mid-table obscurity with this hiring. AVB was decidedly unimpressive at Chelsea, a fact that's emphasised by Di Matteo's reasonable success with the same squad. So why does Levy feel that AVB will achive more at Spurs than Redknapp did? Or is he just trying to compete with the Big Boys by hiring one of their ex-managers? Spurs do indeed have a great squad and they were brilliant until Redknapp became distracted by the England job, but this will be a test of AVB's ability for certain. If Spurz finish Top 4, he's worthy of the accolades. If they finish 5th he's no better than Redknapp and if they finish 6th or lower he's over-hyped.

I'd cut AVB some slack for Chelsea...he was given a brief to overhaul the squad...but not the money or the time to do so...RDM just put the players back in the team that AVB was told to get rid of and went back to playing their old system...RDM didn't achieve anything in the league (he should have finished higher) but playing the old Chelsea way was still good enough to conquer Europe....
AVB is a good coach and if Spurs give him a chance, he could do well....but he's been appointed Head Coach and not Manager....hmmmm....I wonder what sort of set up they are planning...?...will he be able to buy and sell as he wishes..?...
I'm not sure AVB can do much better than Redknapp though...if he loses a few games I'm sure the Spurs fans will call for Redknapp back...I think some have already )
I think this is just a ploy by Levy to sell some Spurs playes for top money and then bring in cheaper replacements...
Goal-line technology has been approved by the International Football Association Board and could be introduced midway through the new Premier League season. Two systems - Hawk-Eye and GoalRef - have passed Fifa's criteria for use. The technology will be used first at December's Fifa Club World Cup and if successful, at the 2013 Confederations Cup and 2014 World Cup.
The goal-line technology argument is a very interesting one. While I agree entirely with having the ability to judge whether a ball has fully crossed the line or not (as we have seen in Germany v England, England v Ukraine, Spurs v United etc etc etc), what it won't be called into arbitrate on is whether the player was off-side, whether a hand was used, whether he fouled a defender etc etc. So we could end up with is Hawkeye telling us "Yes, the ball crossed the line", but no one noticing that Thierry Henry volley-balled it twice on the way in.

This is an argument that critics of goal-line technology have made. It is only the first step that will eventually lead to technology taking over the game from the referee and lines people. I don't see it happening any time soon.
I would welcome technology that prevents players from faking injury, wasting time and shirt tugging.

Twenty five of the thirty clubs in the Scottish Football League have voted against the new Rangers being admitted to the First Division, so they will now start the new season in the Third Division. It appears that sporting integrity has been placed ahead of finance. With Rangers in the Third Division the clubs will get less money from TV contracts.
Incredible. I didn't think that would happen at all. How refreshing. Perhaps the footie world isn't quite as bleak as I have felt over the past couple of years after all.

That's true, and some clubs are starting to worry about that...although on the plus side, the smaller clubs should get a decent payday when Rangers come to visit...
Sir Alex Ferguson has announced his retirement and will step down as Manchester United manager at the end of the season. "The decision to retire is one I have thought a great deal about. It is the right time. It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so." Ferguson took over from Ron Atkinson on the 6th November 1986, his haul of trophies at Old Trafford includes 13 Premier League titles, 2 Champions League, 5 FA Cups, and 5 League Cups.

I suppose that's why he went ballistic when Man U got knocked out of the Champions League, he knew it was his last chance gone for good, supposedly due to a referee decision.
I loved English football when I was a teenager in the early 1970s but have now totally lost interest as it's all about money and clubs can no longer come from nowhere (e.g. Blackburn, Notts Forest) to win the title.
It's all too predictable now, there's hardly any tackling, it doesn't foster development of English players
And yes, I do realise the irony of my reading a thread about football
I must be dreaming

That's right...its always annoyed him that he couldn't match the great Bob Paisley's record of three European Cup (now Champions League) wins...a record he so badly wanted to emulate...

Not quite true...Man City came from nowhere to win it last year...
I wouldn't say its predictable either...the rest could be fair points...
It's looking inevitable that David Moyes will be officially appointed Fergie's successor. Everton have confirmed that Moyes will depart, United's Facebook page contained "Send your personal welcome to our new manager David Moyes". It was later deleted.
While my heart will always beat for AFC Bournemouth I'm also a follower of another club :007)

Just kidding. Bournemouth could be interesting this season. 9th last season and now with Jermain Defoe onboard.
