The explorer Fridtjof Nansen. When his expedition landed on the east coast to cross Greenland for the first time. The only habitated areas of Greenland was on the west coast.
The viking minstrel Egil Skallagrimson cut a man down with his axe, seemingly at random. His friend found it a bit harsh and asked him why. "He was conveniently placed to be cut down," was the reply.
After a viking battle the surviving warriors from the losing side were placed on a tree trunk and chained. A man with a a great battle axe started chopping their heads off one by one. A prisoner asked if somone could hold his long fair hair away from his neck for a cleaner cut. When the axe fell the prisoner yanked his head away and the axe cut off the hands of the man holding his hair. The king on the winning side saw this and admired the defiance of the prisoner and asked him if he wanted clemancy ("grid"). The prisoner replied:"Depends on who's offering ..."
