Are the financial cutbacks that drastic?

Let's hope Pinewood is still able to deliver the magic.

Wouldn't worry too much, after all the Korean beach in DAD was filmed in Wales. Hope the press report the political news more accurately than they do the entertainment news.

I'm not worried about them using nearby locations to double for foreign ones, nor am I worried about the elaborate set. I am worried about the heavy reliance on special effects if they plan on trying to use that to alter their sets and locations heavily. It is usually not too hard to tell when those are involved...

Very mixed messages re the Budget for Skyfall as EON have certainly decided to put the money on the screen in terms of Actors, as I'm sure that this is the most expensive cast we have seen in a Bond film to date . This combined with a 'high profile director' (remember Lee Tamor-who?)
Seems incongruent with cut price locations. Personally I feel that on balance I would quality performances from a top notch supporting cast.

I do wonder why when the take from the last two was so high is there a feeling of a squeeze?
When asked I recall a sheepish Wilson saying that the budget was ' about the same as the last one'

I love the smell of sensationalism in the morning! This is why I never buy newspapers. This is an example of the worst kind of lazy journalism. I love the way that in all these types of stories the information is always credited to the same person. This 'A. Source' chap must really know his stuff. 8-)

It may be true about budget cuts but this is nothing new, I'm sure the people in control will be able to get the best out of the situation.

A fabricated quote from a 'source' told the paper: "To say some of the cast and crew are a bit gutted is an understatement.

That's about all you need to know about the credibility of the article. The British tabs are still reporting that Naomi Harris is playing "Moneypenny". This one is at least a new made up story. Truth be told, some of the finest films ever made were created on tight budgets and some of the biggest pieces of garbage bombs had huge bloated budgets. No amount of money can make up for a poor script and bad acting. As far as the reliance on "special effects", movies have been using matte shots and composits for years to create locations. This past August on a trip to Pittsburgh, PA we watched them shoot scenes for "The Dark Knight Rises" in 90 degree heat with fake snow falling and on the ground....I guarantee that it will look totally convincing on the big screen. In fact, the Gotham City we see in the Batman films is actually a composit of pieces of Pittsburgh, Chicago, LA and London along with a bunch of matte creations.

The story is simply a bit of Filler for the paper and I don't think it's meant to be taken
too seriously,Then again there might be a building they need because it looks like somewhere else.
As for cut Backs. I doubt they'll be spending as much as on QOS, But I'm sure they'll have a
    Healthy Budget.

My worry is more of green screens and sunsets! The worst shot in Casino Royale is on Le Chriffre's boat when his lovely lady is getting out of the water, the green screen inserted sunset out the window is awful. I am sure location doubling will be fine, I just worry when they try to create a different lighting or background scenario that wasn't present on set. I might just be silly, but I feel like it is pretty noticeable when a scene is made up of CGI backgrounds and color altered lighting.

Who cares? A lower budget will force them to work harder to be creative. I'm tired of multi-million-dollar CGI that makes the effects team rich while giving movies the look of a videogame or outrageous amounts of money spent to send a crew to an exotic location only for us to get only a few quick glimpses in the final cut. I'd rather have an intense scene with two guys one-upping each other with high emotional stakes than some insert of some place where the crew took a great vacation.
  • HowardBHowardB USAPosts: 2,755MI6 Agent
For every bad greenscreen insert there are 10 you don't even notice. Hopefully, in Skyfall they will be done well (if at all).

It`s a shame they won`t actually visit more of the real locations, the traveling and locations were an important part of the James Bond franchise. I think they can make British locations look likeother parts of the world. The same forrest near Pinewood was both Cuba in GE and Uganda in CR. But they can`t show the cast walking past famous buildings and the like, that can only happen in the UK anf Turkey. I`m not worried about the CGI. The director and the DoP are world class, so the movie will look good.

there is another link to it here too.... from the daily mail - if I'm to be honest, I'd rather they spend money in the UK than other locations.... we need all the help we can get, and we DO have some great locations... just sh1t weather :)) :D

I have to say, I am totally in agreement with a few of the points on here.

I would much rather the money goes into the performances and the script than the locations, especially considering that landmarks aside, landscaping (beaches, forests, hills etc.) can be filmed locally and perfectly successfully be shown to be an exotic locale.

Also with the GFC and the spectre of GFC II it is great for British jobs and British communities for Bond to be as homemade as possible without detracting from the story and finished product.

If I was a married man with kids on the crew of Skyfall, Bognor is a much more family friendly commute than some far away, jet lagged venue… work is work. I have travelled for work extensively and have to say it really only appeals when young, free and single.

    Suddenly November doesn't seem so far away -{

    Happy New Year everyone.

Ironically, in August and September Glasgow city centre was transformed as Philadelphia, and then San Francisco, for two big budget productions (World War Z with Brad Pitt, and Cloud Atlas, with Halle Berry) and whenever I was there they were spraying the roads (and Halle Berry!) to make it look like it had been raining! :))

LOST (TV Series, 2004-2010) mastered location doubling very well. They used Oahu for almost every foreign scene they needed. They made several different beach locations work, caves made in a nearby soundstage, and nearly ten different cities and locations from around the world all using tricky angles and nondescript areas of Oahu. The only time they actually travelled from their normal locations on Oahu was to LA to borrow another ABC show's set, and then to London because one actor had a scheduling requirement that required he stay there.

Again, I have no worries about doubling locations. I just hope they don't try to make lots of lovely orange sunsets by replacing the backgrounds with CGI and amping up the orange in post production. I agree they do just fine many times, but I really dislike the times when you can just tell they enhanced a standard scene to change the look of the location.

It can work to our advantage, hopefully no dodgy expensive CGI!!!

To be honest I just watched MI 4 today, whilst the film was generally well done (it was about 30 mins too long for my liking), the CGI incorporated into the Dubai scene was quite poor.

Also the ending in India was a step too far (rather the film ended in Dubai) and seemed an excuse to cram in another exotic location for the hell of it.

Im not too bothered about fancy locations, nice to see the Bahamas and stuff but wouldn't care if half the film was in UK or if they fool us. I never realized Uganda was the UK in CR (makes sense as the scene was not difficult to pull off, but I never even thought about it)

To me it just seems like an excuse to minimise costs and maximise profits. Bognor has to be the least appropriate location i can think of...what next Blackpool?...They took in excess of $386,000,000 in the box office alone for Quantum of Solace so where has all that money disappeared to? I'm all for CGI but it should never replace on location shooting. This is James Bond not Avatar!

Perhaps the work of actor, or to make a James Bond movie is exhausting, but it has its good things, is not it?

Mabey in skyfall they're going to bring back Bond throwing a hat on to a coat stand.
Only this time it will have a "Kiss me Quick" slogan on the front. :))

Another verson of the story, :))

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/filmblog/2012/jan/19/skyfall-james-bond-bognor-regis?newsfeed=true
According to reports, budgetary constraints have meant that Skyfall can no longer afford to film in five of its planned six countries. Apparently now it'll just be shot in Turkey, with the Pinewood set-makers doing their best to fudge convincing reproductions of the rest. What's more, the budget cuts now mean that much of Skyfall will be set in Bognor Regis. This isn't a joke, apparently. A deep-level source told the Mirror that "while Bognor is hardly the most exotic of locations, it is important for the franchise that they support British industry, and give something back."

Sad to see, after QOS made ALL that Money. :v

Agreed. Loved the description of QOS though as " a wet fart", the consensus including DC's comments is that it really was a Turkey. I was starting to doubt it myself as there have been a number of very spirited defences.

    Ha ha excellent work SD, perhaps we'll also see an appearance by Kill Bill baddies the Crazy 88s, although of course for the sake of Bond in Bognor they'll be known as the Two Fat Ladies. -{
