Does anyone have any idea as to where I could source a good full sized replica or a decommissioned original from?

FRWL era obviously!

A bit pricey but it's about the only option as far as I'm aware.

The rifle in question is NOT the FRWL/Goldfinger version. There are great differences in the materials utilised. The barrel has to be pinned to the receiver but the stock is still removable. Expect to pay at least £1000 for a deactivated original 1960's Costa Mesa manufactured, brown stocked .22 calibre Armalite AR7 Explorer in the UK.

you are right but if it was near the 295 asking price its a good compromise for the collector. I do have a polished dark wood AR7 stock but no bits!

if you do a search you'll find a few ar-7 related threads.

i got mine from the supplier mentioned above, and I've never had anyone so helpful. believe it's andy i dealt with, but the guy was brilliant to deal with.

also gotta thank uncle pete for getting it for me :x

although its the 'same' gun, you'll find a few differences from the original design. this one is all plastic, including the barrel :o but, its been slightly tweeked over the years so it doesn't jam.... as much.... as the original guns used to.

never did figure out why a gun prone to jamming was considered ok to use as a survival gun... :s

    It is a plastic barrel over a metal one, in my eyes tacky, that is why I haven't bothered with one -{

    Yours is much better Christof.

Also, getting a deac you won't be able to take the barrel off, they permanently fix it to the action 8-)

Maybe a good quality replica is the way to go if its a display piece only? Do they exist?

I'm in Hong Kong, but a UK resident, just for display with my SD FRWL case, the one I was looking at was the WA version which appears very realistic and based on the 1960s model.

well if you're living in the UK then good look mate. even having a replica made could be very tricky. :#

For me personally, it's been a plinker. Picked mine up for $150 because the guy said it jammed constantly, though was surprisingly accurate. Turns out he literally never cleaned it. I'd never seen a rifle more badly in need of a cleaning! I started firing .22 Stingers in it and I got myself a great little rifle to play around with. I've shot a few postal matches with it just for grins (especially when there are rules restricting the type of rifle you use), but for the most part, a pure plinker.
By the way, are you gonna eat that?

Indeed, I did think about upgrading to a full steel barrel but the cost of it just wasn't worth it. I use mine as just a plinker, a novelty gun real. Is quite funny though when you turn up at the range with a box of rounds in your pocket and a plastic stock under your arm, while others have gun cases, equipment bags, jackets, eyewear and gloves etc. I'm good to go in about 30secs and turned up, booked a lane, built the gun, shot, packed up, signed out and back in the car while others are still putting their jackets on :))

its hard to say where to get one mate cos i know sweet FA about HK. i've no idea about the gun laws out there, the technicalities of import/export or even if you're allowed to have one.

my only suggestion is finding a local gun shop or smith and asking their advice.

Depends. I can give you a list of places a mile long if you live in the US like I do, but if outside the US, not much I can do.

EDIT: Not deleting the first part of this just in case anyone in the US wants to know where to get a good AR-7. But I see you're in Hong Kong...so no idea, sorry. :#
