Are the other OOs useless

I have just been to see MI4 (good movie). For those who have seen it you will know, for those that haven't this won't actually spoil anything, it starts with an IMF agent played by Josh Holloway stealing documents from a courier and then making a daring escape by jumping from a building onto an airbag. As he falls he twists around and shoots a couple of bad guys.

It occurred to me that you would never see this in a Bond movie. The 00 section is meant to be the elite of MI6 (sort of as the SAS is to the Army) but with the exception of 006 in GE the other OOs never seem to show any compotence.

TMWTGG - 002 Bill Fairbanks gets shot by Scaramange in Beirut. OK Scaramange is meant to be the world's greatest assassin (althought for my part there is little evidence of this onscreen) so maybe 002 has an excuse for being outclassed.

OP - 009 is killed by Mischka and Grischka. It looked to me like he was running through the woods like a scared rabbit rather than a skilled agent.

AVTAK - 003 gets himself killed in Siberia.

TLD - 002 gets paintballed as soon as he lands. OK it was by the SAS so maybe excusable. 004 get killed and just hangs there watching the assassin cut his rope rather than trying to do anything to save himself.

TWINE - 009 shoots Renard but can't manage to kill him. Necessary plot device I know.

I know Bond is the star of the 00 Section but it would be nice to see other OOs looking like they are nearly as good.

I know Bond obviously has to be the star of the 00 Section

Yes I too have never really understood how all these 00's managed to get themselves killed so easily, and because they're less famous than Bond you'd expect they have a better chance at succeeding in their assigned missions. But apparantely not...

I can forgive the 002s, 003 and 006, just because atleast they had excuses for dying, really :))

There was Alec Trevelyan 006, who was just as good as Bond. Only, you know, evil.

Of course we don't know what the other double o's have got up to. 009 might have saved the planet from evil criminal masterminds with sparkly bikini'd girlfriends a dozen times, but he hasn't got his own film series. All we got to see was his death in a clown suit. And 008 is always talked up as Bond's replacement on missions, which never fails to annoy 007; I like to imagine he's much better than Bond, but he's lazy, and so he lets 007 get all the glory.

I'm not really interested in the exploits of the other agents - we have two hours with 007; why reduce his screentime? The exception would be a Double O Bond Girl as his assistant, like Suzi Kew in the comic books.

I have always wanted to see more of the other OO's, which was why I liked the LD PTS so much.
I would like to see them in training, or on a joint mission. I did not rate Sean Bean very highly, and would like to see one of the female OO's in action.

Bond is always the 'rebellious child' of the outfit- effective but unorthodox, which causes the 'parent' M to be ' critical' and occasionally 'nurturing Parent' We suspect that Bond is "the best we have" but it would be nice to hear about the successes that the others have.

Plus of course they're all at the meeting in TB to discuss the ransom plot. In this case, our man has some insider information which puts him ahead.

Actually, I think Craig would benefit from having more 00s. They were sidelined in the other Bonds because they were more egotistical but Craig's more realistic approach might make the inclusion of others (not as a team, but allowed to feature and be seen) more feasible.

I know he wasn't a double o, but Carter in the Madagascar scene of CR was the poorest excuse for a field agent ever. Even discharging his weapon when he fell into the pit. I wish that cobra had bitten him in the face...

I'd never taken the time to work it out (which you kindly have Bodie), but it would appear that 002 and 009 wear the proverbial "red shirt" when it comes to double-0 luck.

To be fair to "poor" Bill Fairbanks, his hands were rather full at the time ... and perhaps he closed his eyes during a kiss while 007 is always looking for corneal reflections?

I'd look at it this way:

002 - Like you said, killed by the worlds greatest assassin. If you're gonna get killed you might as well got killed by the best :D

009 - Who knows what went on before he was chased throught the woods? I find it strange that he didn't have a weapon but still....

003- Again, we don't see how he was killed....may or may not have been avoidable

004 - To be fair to him he was suspended halfway up a cliff face with only a rope saving him from a severe drop. Not alot could have been done to save himself there.

009 - He shoots Renard in the head. That should be enough to kill 99% of people in all honesty. Could he have confirmed the kill? Who knows?

Like Bond says, the life of a 00 is very short. Who knows how many successful missions these partiular 00's completed before they met their untimely demise?

I agree with poor Bill Fairbanks's death. Besides being in a romantic hug unsuspecting at the time he probably never even knew he was marked for a golden bullet by Scaramanga at all in the first place. At least not as far as we know though it was implied that Scaramanga usually liked to warn his victims to terrify them. If he knew then he was obviously taking it very cool and calm.

As for 009 in the clown suit I admit I always had the feeling that he contributed to his unfortunate demise because he cracked and had a panic attack. If he had calmed down he may have been able to form a plan for a surprise ambush in the bushes as a trained 00 agent. Even at the end he did still have a chance to escape with his life when the first knife missed him as he was climbing the bridge. If he'd used his head and jumped into the water the current would have swept him away to safety. But no. Instead he tries to climb up again and the second knife gets him and then he falls and is carried away by the water while he is dying. Very sad. :(

I always figured that the film-makers and the producers didn't want to have a nameless Double-O Agent outshining the great Double-O Seven. Because in order to make James Bond look good, you have to make the other 00 Agents look bad, meaning incompetent in the face of a cocky womanizer like Bond.

It's not fair and it never will be. But Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson own the rights to produce these Bond movies and as long as they're in charge, this will never change....Unfortunately.

Oh, by the way I forgot to mention this earlier; during the Pierce Brosnan era, one person actually did manage to outshine James Bond but unfortunately her name was Michelle Yeoh (Wai Lin) and she was not a Double-O. She was a fairly tomboyish looking Bond girl.

Hilarious. I had a girlfriend once that insisted on kissing with eyes open. She claimed it was more romantic. Now I realize that she was simply defending herself from sneak attacks.
