The wallpaper used on M's latop in CR

All right, I know everyone is excited about the Skyfall news and the other two Craig movies are currently "in the shadow", but maybe this will be interesting for some of you.

Because none of the "MI6 wallpapers" on the internet was actually looking like the one used in the film (not mine, not the other ones), I've decided to make a try and create the one that WAS actually used in the movie. Impossible? Well, there is a moment, when the camera is showing M's laptop's desktop from the front. I've cutted it out and made sort of a template from it, so it looks like this:

WALLPAPER_TEMPLATE.jpg

Then I began creating the wallpaper from the very beginning, basing on this screenshot. The effect? Here is a screenshot from my laptop...

Tell me what you think about it. I spent a lot of time doing this, about 8-9 hours, so I hope you will like it :) IT'S NOT THE FINAL VERSION, I will change the colours a little bit and the text in the bottom-right corner is underneath the logo, so it's wrong. But you've got the idea ;)

This may be the final one...

But I'm thinking to give it even less contrast. Will see.

Now that is more on point to my eyes. Very neat. I am right in guessing you do such design as your profession? Or is it a side job hobby?

All right, here I have the final version. I was working on it as you know for a very long time, so it's not free, but I don't want to make it very expensive because I hope that more than one person will be interested in it... :D Anyway, here it it with my watermark in 800x500 resolution (the original is in 1280x800, other sizes per request):

    PRIVATE_WALLPAPER_2006_VERSION_DEMO.jpg

Price: 10$. Don't think it's very much for the last, final and accurate reproduction of the wallpaper seen in the movie :)

All right, because I see that actually no one is interested in it, so for the first week I will make a price reduction to 7$. Valid till the 15th ;)

It's obviously your call Zareba considering you did the work, but with things being in the digital forum the spirit of communities such as this is normally free, and good karma, i.e. Wallpapers, ringtones, fashion and facts advice etc.
I mean if you get a few expressions of interest is it really worth $7 or $10, spread the love and receive good karma down the line I say.

I understand what you mean, but I've been making a lot of things for free for a long time here before I've tried to sell them. Digital does not mean worthless, especially that I spend a hell lot of time doing things like this. Fan-made posters or things like that are obviously uploaded here for free use, but that's the difference: I make props, just like other prop makers. I just make them in a way no one else was trying to make and of course, in my world in which I feel quite confident (the digital world of course ;)) So as long as I find your arguments reasonable, I can't say my are unreasonable at all :)

MrZareba, my company designs and produces software, so I know exactly where you are coming from. May I make a suggestion based on my experience trying to make a profit in the digital world?

I would give this particular piece of work away for free. It generates a lot of good will, as was mentioned, and will inevitable get more eyes looking at your great work.

BUT you can also offer to customize it for people for a small fee, say the $10.00 you are asking for. For example, with this particular piece, maybe you could add a static frame that displays a "00 Agent File" and include a picture of the client, name, 00 number, and cool (fake) info like the number of kills and places where he/she has been stationed. This would be easy and quick for you to do with a basic template, but for the buyer it really makes it personal and makes them feel like the have something more than just another wallpaper.

As I said, this is just a suggestion :) All the best and congrats on the great work!

I agree it is great work, and though I do not have the high skill levels that Zareba has, I use Photoshop for some hobby editing and know that these projects can suck away hours and hours in multiple sessions.

I understand if he doesn't want to do it for free, but it may be a good idea to price the customized version high and maybe introduce a lower priced or free version without the words on it. It is just a little tough to swallow from the consumer side to pay $10 for a wallpaper, but I am sure people love the design itself as much as I do.

EDIT: http://www.ajb007.co.uk/topic/37401/blue77-for-ajb007/ I still hope to grab one of these eventually.

You also need to consider how people are going to pay you: would you give your credit card info to a stranger on a community forum? How are you going to process payments?

He had a paypal set up I think. So no actual info gets to him, just money through your paypal account.

He made me a customized wall paper for my phone, and I didn't mind paying for it. I sent it to his paypal and he emailed me the wallpaper. Very easy transaction. The guy is an artist and makes great stuff and he's very good at it. I think it's perfectly fine to charge a price if he wants.

    Hi Mr. Zareba,

Perfectly cool for you to do what you are doing. Please don't take my words as a criticism, merely a community minded suggestion. Also I would like to add that I think your work does look brilliant. Big respect in that.

I thought canoe2012 added some good ideas too.

I think the key to your comment is that he made you a "customized" wall paper, and that's what you paid for. In my experience (and I am not suggesting it is the only one that matters :) ) when it comes to things digital, people are less likely to pay for work you have already done, unless it is part of a larger online ecosystem (app store), and even then they want cheap ($0.99). BUT people are much more likely to pay for work you are going to do, especially if it is something "special" just for them (which is exceedingly rare in the digital world). Then, as Mr. Beech suggested, you can charge a premium! The $10.00 I suggested for customization may be too low, especially if he already has satisfied customers (always a great thing to hear).

MrZareba, I am really glad you are doing something you love; it definitely shows in the product.

Well, I must be honest that I don't know what to do... There can be some "customization" on the wallpaper included, but than it wont be screen accurate any more (the text in the corner is exactly the same as in the movie). I can lower the price to, I don't know, 3$, but damn, I was working on it hard for over 8 hours, so why should I give it out now for free? ;( Especially that I'm not a type of a person who has a lot of free time for doing such things ;/

    MrZareba is the only one creating this sort of thing, his phone themes are the bollocks :D , if he feels that he wants payment for these things then we should support him, that is if you want all of the SF desk tops and phone soft wear -{

To be honest I think if these had been from SF they would have sold like hot cakes :D

I just checked out the link posted by Mr. Beech that shows your previous work, and there is some great stuff there! If you love what you do, then charge what you feel it is worth. You seem to have a solid fan base here, so maybe the market will support it.

My suggestion came from my own personal experience and what has worked for my company. Just to be clear, what I thought may work for you would be to give people two options: the "Standard" version for free (maybe with a small watermark identifying you as the creator), and a customized version for a price. If you did that, I bet 90% of the people here would download your free work immediately. Your audience would grow and more people would be talking about your work and what you are creating next. As it stands right now, you have all these great pieces, but not many customers, so they are just sitting there.

By charging for the customization (which you seem to be doing anyway with the phone wallpapers and Facebook timeline cover), your market would be smaller, but you could really charge a premium. The customized work wouldn't be movie accurate, as you said, but some people really want that "personalized" look that makes their tech stand out and are willing to pay for it, especially if many other people already have the "standard" version.

For your iphone and android products, have you thought about putting them in the app stores? Charge $0.99 or $1.99 and reach millions of people.

I would think about it as the "Angry Birds" business model: Give away the free version so millions of people are talking about it and then charge for the HD version. Maybe only 1% or 2% buy the HD version, but that is still a minimum of 10,000 people a month, and at $5.00 per purchase ... you get the idea.

Just my opinion! :) There is a book called "Free" by Chris Anderson that discusses the digital economy and makes for interesting reading.

1st of all I love the wallpaper
And as I viewed in posts above maybe personnelizing the wallpapers is a good idea
I have the Iphone wallpaper and it looks awsome on the phone,
as for the wallpapers, I also have the small logo's wallpaper on my computer and love it.
And I believe that a small fee is not bad if you can get something you like, but can't make yourself.
I make different ID cards based on the movies and know how much time and effort it takes, so a little fee is oke with me.
And as they say "time is money".
