You'll have to pay Mr Murdoch if you want to see 007 on your telly again...

I have a Sky package that does not include the films. I will not be paying any extra just to watch something I already have on DVD. I stopped watching the Bond films on ITV years ago because of the adverts. And because they quite often split the film in two inserting thirty minutes of news in the middle. Having said all that, I do sympathise with those who would like to continue to see the Bond films on tv but who will now it appears not be able to for financial or other reasons.

    Elliot Carver wins! X-(

Then again, maybe it's for the best. I got so sick of the films repeatedly popping up, at one point they would show it on ITV1 on Sunday, then the following Saturday on ITV1 too, the same film even! Jeez. Bond became like Midsomer Murders.

So no Bank Holiday Bond movie ever again? On ITV anyway. Again, no biggie because imo there haven't been any classic Bonds of that ilk in decades, since TLD they seem a bit fun-free and reduced on the small screen, or too violent (GE) to be family fun.

With the big 5-0 Blu-Ray set on the way, I am not going to be watching it on TV in the States on purpose. I need to whet my appetite for a fall run of all 22 films and a theatre trip for SkyFall.

That is certainly why they dropped the Netflix rights. They wanted people to pre-order the Blu-Ray/DVD Anniversary set or pay for each viewing on streaming rental services.

I have Sky but I don't subscribe to the movie channels - I just wouldn't watch them enough. As to the Bond movies, well Sky can go stick them where the sun don't shine - DVD and BluRay are at hand :v

I was annoyed when formula 1 went to Sky - but guess what? It's better. More behind the scenes, more coverage plus Sky's ability to employ gorgeous women presenters... :v

Now they have Bond. Good. They'll be remastered and shown in HD. There will be no annoying adverts, breaks for the news etc. I feel sorry for those without the relevant package, but terrestrial tv has been so bad over the past couple of years BBC, ITV and Channel 4 need to invest heavily and provide a better product or they will simply fade and die. I am fed up with ten year old repeats, cheap reality rubbish, ten week series on life in Cornwall/ The Lakes/ Yorkshire which could be done in an hour, and dancing on or off the fuc*ing ice with or without celebrities!

Totally agree, mind you are they still called 'terrestrial' channels these days? How might one otherwise refer to the Big Five channels?

Wish Sky would bag the rights to other films that get shown ad infinitum, ad nauseum (not to mention including the ads): School of Rock, Black Narcissus and so on.

Sky Movies is launching a new channel in October dedicated to James Bond. It will be in both standard and high definition. All the films will be shown without adverts.

To be honest, I quite like Bond films with adverts in a way, they make the films seem less dated or cheesy. Still, I can see the appeal of not having them.

Good. ITV have been ruining the Bonds for years, cutting them to squeeze into shorter time slots or for inappropriate content due to the transmission time.

I remember seeing 'Dr No' in its first broadcast on ITV in 1975. As the trailer put it: "ITV presents, for the first time on British television..." (cut to Connery in the casino:) "Bond, James Bond." For about ten years I watched every ITV broadcast of a Bond film (except for their premiere of 'Thunderball': I was devastated because my parents arranged a coach-trip seaside outing for us on the same day as the broadcast, and we got home in time only for the end titles). In fact, I was fortunate enough to have seen already all but three of the Bond movies in the cinema by the time ITV secured the rights to broadcast them (three of the sixties movies, including Thunderball, in big-screen double bills), but my first ever (no less exciting) viewings of FRWL, YOLT and OHMSS were on ITV. The Bank Holiday ritual of Bond on ITV became a national institution - part of the 'periodic reactivation' of Bond during the 70s and 80s which Tony Bennett and Janet Woollacott discuss in their academic study, 'Bond and Beyond'. A number of the films are structured simply as a series of set pieces, so in most cases even the ad breaks didn't seem too intrusive. Latterly, as has been said, ITV didn't respect the movies sufficiently well, what with their pre-watershed cuts and extended interruptions for the Ten O'Clock news. Sky might manage the films better now, and their promise of no ad breaks at all is encouraging. In the UK, the pre-VHS days of having a choice between only three channels ended during the 80s, so it's been a long time since massive TV audiences simultaneously watched Bond together as 'an event'; the transfer of broadcasting rights from ITV, as one of the original free-to-view channels, to a subscription channel, Sky, represents a belated but, in a sense, sad acknowledgement that the era of Bond on TV as 'national ritual' is, indeed, long-since past.

Yes, an interesting nostalgic post Shady... we just adore your tract... :D

But ITV1 have made it worse than necessary. Films like CR never got a great showing, buried away on ITV3; I don't remember it or QoS getting a great Xmas Day or Boxing Day premiere, or anyone making the smart move of showing both back to back.

I remember the fruity voice of the male announcer telling you the Bond film was up next.

Yes, the days when there were only three TV channels. The days when Bond films on ITV were an event. Live And Let Die drew a record audience of approx 23 million on it's debut in 1980. It's very rare to get that high an audience for anything these days. Sky's audience will be nearer 230,000.

For many of us, Bond after the Queen's Speech as the key part of ITV's schedule for Christmas Day afternoons is a glowing, collective memory (although the films' premiere TV broadcasts were usually scheduled in evening slots). As far as Daniel Craig's era is concerned, it was the BBC rather than ITV which was able to create nostalgia for Bond on TV as "national ritual". I refer, of course, to Bond's Olympics Opening Ceremony sketch with the Queen, a significant tribute to Bond even though it was merely a surprise 'pre-credits sequence' for the ceremony. It's a shame that Brosnan's Bond, who was closer to a Francis Drake figure as the millenial "White Knight" (his TND code name), never got an opportunity like this to do a sketch with the Queen. But the incumbent Craig convinces as a businesslike escort/bodyguard: he reflects, perhaps, Her Majesty's own toughness.

Nothing on the Sky link, but I recall (I think) that Sky only has them for 12 months? Light at the end of the tunnel?

And if so, does ITV have to bid for them back, or just take them back - and hopefully (after seeing how it should be done) show them uncut. Having said that, their current showings on ITV haven't been too bad, although I was concious of two nipple shots being cut - and at least Denise Perrier finally appeared on ITV.

Okay, I'm a Yank so you might have to translate that one for me! :)) If I had to guess I'd say the "throne" is the toilet, but I have no idea what "gurning" is or what that has to do with Connery driving his fake car.

Happy to help you overcome your deficiency :s Throne is indeed a term meaning toilet and 'Gurning' is the pulling of strange and comic looking expressions. Such expressions can on occasion accompany the activity associated with being " on the Throne" Gurning itself however is not limited to or always associated with toilet humour, as it can exist independently. I even believe there are competitions for the most grotesque examples, often achieved by elderly people who remove their false teeth to achieve higher forms of the craft.

It's amazing what can pass for entertainment in these Isles. :s

Gurning = pulling an odd, bizarre face, a bit like Jim Carrey used to do.

The video is superb, should be on all the new DVDs as a promo.
