I hope that this is not a sign of what we can expect with the final theatrical poster..
Of course it is a sign. I would be shocked at this point if they come up with an illustrated poster for the final one sheet. I'm all for character posters too. But all of these with the exception of the new Bond girl, although I didn't study the poster for long, are pretty bland. The producers are anti-risk at this point.
There was a recent article on MI6-HQ that had the timeline of Tarantino's interest in filming Casino Royale.
A quote from Tarantino states that "they (the producers) can't do anything wrong with it...let's just this one year go my way and do it a little differently. I won't do anything that will ruin the series." Pierce Brosnan is also quoted in the article. I always felt that Casino Royale was luck. Also that the opening scene was only because Tarantino wanted to film the movie as a period piece and in black and white.
Maybe Skyfall will be great. I have a feeling that Daniel Craig requested Sam Mendes and if the movie turns out to be another QoS in terms of fan response. Daniel Craig will get the boot similar to Pierce Brosnan with the producers acting like it was everyone's fault except them.
What in the world does that mean? Casino Royale had a very good script that contained many elements of the novel, the direction was solid, and the performances, especially Craig's, were top-notch. I think those factors had much more to do with the film's success than "luck".

All success is down to some luck. As William Goldman said, "Nobody knows anything." Sure, you can safeguard to a degree with the Bond brand a strong seller & CASINO ROYALE moulded to suit a Bourne-friendly audience. But who honestly thought a film that bucked the series' formula starring an apparently miscast actor would have trounced the previous entry; a film which embaced the Bond milieu of spectacle & bangs, starring one of the most popular actors ever to grace the role? And success not just with mass audiences, but with critics alike, a notoriously elitist breed of people always sniffy towards the franchise. I certainly wouldn't have put a bet in CASINO ROYALE's favour. And it has little to do with quality of product as there've been many instances of good films which fail to find an audience. So to my mind it's down to 99% hard work & 1% fingers tightly crossed!
As for the current SKYFALL poster, it's not bad. As usual it sells its product on the personalities involved rather than anything that happens in the film. That's the way it is now & I accept it, albeit with a longing for the those older designs. It did initially remind me of a shop window display advertising its new season designs & Javier Bardem does look as if he's walked out of THE MATRIX with his swishing leather coat. But it doesn't detract from the excitement of the trailers & what still promises to be a very engaging Bond film indeed.

With you on this one. It's more like the exact opposite. With the amount of negative per-release press (Craig cannot drive a stick shift, can't do action, no chemistry with Eva Green etc) plus the general wave of uproar from some hard core Bond fans (myself included as I was deeply sceptical) such as too short, blond, blah blah blah. I was amazed that despite how good it would be or not that it was unlikely to be given a fair shake. The fact that it did get a favourable reception in the main, plus a glut of nominations is a testament to how good it was and not luck at all.
Have to disagree with you, my friend. I am not saying that luck couldn't have played a part in the success of CR, but it was not the prevailing factor in determining how well the film was received by the public and the critics alike (and most certainly not 99% responsible). No amount of luck would turn a lousy film into one as critically successful as CR. And while I would admit I was skeptical about Craig being the right choice to take on the role of Bond, I was willing to wait and see what the filmmakers did with him. Again, I believe the screenwriters and the direction by Martin Campbell came through with a winner, aided by a terrific turn by Craig as the new 007. In my view, to say that quality of the product has little or nothing to do with the film's success is simply off-base.

Maybe luck is not the right word. But until Casino Royale, the producers were making action movies that happened to have Bond in them. Pierce Brosnan was playing a best of both worlds Bond between Connery and Moore. Goldeneye was ok for the time. TND was ok until Bond let the BMW go off the roof. TWINE is my favorite as finally the mix of Connery and Moore seemed to almost be perfect and Brosnan felt like his own Bond. It could do with one less action scene. DAD was back to the action fest movie.
With Casino Royale. They actually used (I strongly believe) some of Tarantino's ideas. Read that MI6-HQ article timeline. Also, I remember Tarantino on Jay Leno talking about his ideas and how he would film it plus keeping the torture scene. The article is correct about the producers not wanting to go back to the harsh Bond. Even Pierce Brosnan in his early Bond days said it couldn't be done. I believe there is a BMW magazine article with Brosnan about it.
Yes, with Casino Royale the producers got all the right people but some of that action fest stuff from the previous Brosnan films is apparent. I mentioned it once here how the airport scene goes on a bit too long for me. But I can accept it now. Also, how in the Casino, the card game is almost always broken up by action scenes. But when you see Quantum of Solace. That is what I'm getting at calling Casino Royale luck. Quantum of Solace is very much in the mold of the previous Brosnan Bond films.
As I've said before, I hope with Skyfall we actually get to see Daniel Craig play Bond. As Casino Royale was the origin of his Bond and QoS was a mess of a action movie that forgot what the ending of Casino Royale meant. Maybe the producers shouldn't be playing up the anniversary because we all know how well that went with DAD.
PS - As this is the poster thread. I would be happy with the producers allowing Mondo to do a Bond series. Although, I believe the company is seriously over hyped. They did do a Goldfinger poster which I didn't like that much but apparently it goes for a lot these days.
The scene where Le Chiffre goads Bond and is goaded in return is not unlike the classic torture scene from True Romance, with Zorin and 'Leiter who never was' Dennis Hopper.
Of course, CR is a return to Fleming, and dares to be bold because it has to. If you have a Fleming Bond you've never done before, it's gold dust. Without that, they wouldn't have dared to reboot with Bond in his first assignment, the betrayal, the torture scene and so on. So much of the praise is really down to Fleming.
Next film on, they had to start from scratch again and bottle it.
Oh, as for the poster, it's dull that's posters today for ya. I mean, look at the Bourne Again poster, it really could not be any more dull. Not even sure what the Dark Knight Rises poster looks like.

Blackleiter, perhaps my definition of 'luck' was a bit askew. I'd say the timing of changing style tack after DIE ANOTHER DAY, the acquisition of the CASINO ROYALE rights & the success of Bourne was certainly fortuitous.

Well, you can download poster in really high resolution and then take it to the nearest photoshop in your town and they'll print it for you in the size you want. This is the way I do it... I think, that this is enough - 4421x6264

I wish the posters would start becoming old school again and hand drawn/painted. The Connery and the Moore posters were some of the coolest ever. Like Star Wars and Indy carried on that tradition I think the bond films should too, especially craigs. They suit it.

I don't think luck can get TEN BAFTA nominations!
CR is my favourite 007 movie ever.
