How come virtually every 'new' thing these days, be it a TV series or film, is in fact a remake, rehash, prequel, sequel, alternative reality or 'next generation' version?
I can name several big name examples, but my main question is;
Why can't anyone think of something original anymore?

Probably because a lot of people want the old stuff redone.
It may because the older generation is still a market for silly rubbish like Marvel Comic adaptations and James Bond etc, stuff they grew up with, whereas in decades before people grew up and did adult things like DIY and the accounts.
So we go back and rehash our younger years with improved CGI, whereas before the kids got to dictate new stuff, new themes, new ideas. They didn't want dad's hand-me-downs.

I disagree. - I only wish it was as intelligent as that!
The simple truth is, - "There are no truly original idea left in the film industry." Of course we have to translate that out of marketing media and PR bollocks. The actual truth. - "There are tons of original ideas left, but modern film, literary and television producers are too terrified to risk their careers and everyone else's investment to make them!" A good example is the Harry Potter books. Publisher after publisher turned down J K Rowling, because her ideas were considered too original old fashioned in style and unworkable. - Ie this stuff is too clever and dark for kids to handle. The Author and the publisher who was prepared to take a chance on her, proved everyone "in the know" spectacularly wrong.
This "re-invent the wheel because the audience won't notice" routine is a classic example of old school thinking. Today we have DVD, Blueray, streaming, Digital photography, Netflix, YouTube... Not to mention the can of worms that good quality fan film productions has opened up. Essentially nything we love from the last 50 years of film and tv can be found easily online.
Added to that, is the assumption that everyone is obsessed with the new and shiny, ignorant of the concept that classic, antique or vintage are part of the vocabulary. Its a sign of how those who think of profit, don't think of the audience with intelligence. = It really pisses me off!
There are exceptions to the rule - Star Trek The Next Generation, Thunderbirds TAG-15, and Stargate SG1.
But now we are getting Start Trek - We Discovered, (The Generation after that prequel, before the sequels at the same time as the original one, not in a parallel timeline, and Stargate, the Film re-reboot by the same people who Sequeled Independence Day 20 years later after Battle-Stargate Galactia Universe died on arrival. ENOUGH ALREADY!!

I agree with T2 and TP, people don't trust their own judgement or are too scared to take a chance. Instead of trying something completely original (and potentially brilliant), they remake something that was successful once before. It's much the same with people who have responsibility for hiring people today. Instead of conducting proper interviews and trusting their own judgement, they use programmes that scan cover letters and CVs for key words, then they have test upon test for the candidates that the computer spat out. I know people who got jobs not because they were suited for them or even properly qualified, but because they'd figured out the key words and knew how to pass the tests. It's way harder to con an experienced and intelligent person in a one-on-one interview than it is to pass a test that has been designed by some HR company.
Over the years, mostly all Las Vegas Hotels installed a "resort fee" which is simply an additional charge to makeup their real room rates.
They claim that this is for amenities which the "resort offers" but basically it's just a pool and in many cases a free WIFI.
In the past, I chose those hotels, which did not charge this kind of fee, but recently it's more or less impossible to get a hotel there that doesn't add a "resort fee" (US$ 20-35/night/room).
As a result , in some hotels, the "Resort Fee" is higher than the room rate itself!
What I really find nasty is that the hotels are now starting to advertise, that they void this fee - something which has started only for one purpose: Screw people over who don't read the fineprint.

When my husband left the police a couple of years ago he went for a few interviews and was amazed at how ridiculous the process has become with virtually no emphasis on whether you can actually do the job or have any relevant skills. Like you say, it's all key words and topics like diversity, equal opportunities, delegation and 'cascading information' 8-)
The other thing that we worked out very quickly was to actually avoid recruitment agencies and try to stay with companies that have their own HR department. Agencies will try and send you for the most random jobs or completely miss that you have the perfect skill set for a role.

Re unoriginal blockbusters, I suppose the sheer amount of cash spent on them prevents them from taking a risk. It's the same with the pop charts perhaps. To promote them these days you need to spend a shedload of money on promos and videos. Back in the 60s and 70s the one-off novelty single stood a better chance, though to be fair that also included a lot of total dross.
