Reminds me of government cutbacks with higher education, policing, the MOD, the NHS, government pension schemes and public spending on things like upkeep of roads etc.
Oh but then we can afford an Olympic games, and to pay a complete shambolic prick called nic buckles. Keith Vaz is my hero.
I also read yesterday that an anonymous donor has given £10m to cancer research. It's gonna be used to fund new facilities to be built and help get more effective drugs to market. A spokesman was saying that with budget cuts forever happening, they're increasingly frustrated by having great ideas and research projects which can't be taken further due to lack of funding.
Just think what they could achieve if our government stopped giving money away to places like India (who IMO don't need financial support anymore) and they ditched the Olympic crap and invested it into much needed medical research.
I mean, what's more important to people these days? Watching some people throw pointy stick and run round a track or a potentially life saving treatment for people with an absolutely heartbreaking disease.
Please guys, the next time you see a collection box, give whatever you can. Together we can beat it.

Much talk of wasted money here. I pay huge business rates and yet they've cut road sweepers out. So the street looks ****. So I pay twice as much rates, and sweep the front of my business up myself. Go figure.
IMO we need to be more self contained as a country. We need to stop immigration, unless they have a job to go to. Cut out long term benefits, council houses for life (many older couples are now in huge four or five bedroomed houses now their kids have left home), stop paying people to stay off work, drop the tax on fuel, cut VAT down to under 15% to get people spending, stop supermarkets from fixing their alcohol prices too low so pubs can make money again. War is expensive and we involve ourselves in too much. I've lost many friends, and for what? We need to be able to DEFEND ourselves and our sovereignty. When the Argies have a go at the Falklands again, we have one carrier and no planes. Perhaps we could ask to meet them in the desert for a fight? We need to stop giving money to countries who refuse to sort their **** out. Stop giving money full stop! We don't have it to give! We also need to retrain border security and put our money into intelligence services, then use our troops and police at home to make us too harder target for terrorists. We also need to deport anyone who threatens our citizens. If you preach hatred, you're gone.
Ok that's that then. What's next?

Sounds too much like common sense, old man. The problem is, you'll understand; the country is stuck in a rut and you would need to have everybody on-board to make such change effective. Too many people getting a good deal - From civil servants to executives to benefit scroungers. Too many people are on the take without a seconds thought for provenance. In addition, the overemphasis of multiculturalism and constant reminder that we're all 'different' is counter-productive. We should be unified regardless of difference, linked together in common identity as CITIZENS (while recognising and respecting the individual naturally). If you unify the country regardless of difference and work on a micro socialist model of 'the greater good' then you step in the right direction.

Now, you see a welcome message (with your last name always written wrongly) and have to browse thru a crappy menu to find the tv menu.
In my case last weekend, I went thru 5 different sub-menus always choosing "TV-Programmes" before I could finally see what I was looking for.
2. Bathtubs in hotel rooms: No being over-picky with sanity and stuff, I would NEVER even consider of taking a bath in a hotel room. I don't even want to imagine, what went on in these tubs, so they are pretty useless.
Additionally, when using a tub as a shower I am getting annoyed by the curved and small surface that I am standing in and stepping on the plug causing then a little lake around my feet during showering.
Bending down to open that plug, the entire thing went into pieces, which is really nice to dive for in the little "lake" that has previously been caused.
Next time, I am booking a hotel room, I'll ask for a shower and not a bathtub instead of smoking/nonsmoking

Well the last hotel I stayed in was totally crap, peeling wallpaper, mould round the bath, window frames were rotting. 2 channels on the tv YES JUST TWO! the whole place had a weird smell like a body under the floorboards and the food was crappy over priced slop, a carvery night after night. The whole lot was situated in an old stately house which 5 years ago was a brilliant place to stay. These days its just falling apart and no one seems interested in doing any work to it.
Hotels huh, these days unless ya paying top dollar I'd just get a cheap Travel Inn.
Ps Markus, any chance of a copy of them pics you took?
I can't stand these idiots who shoot people in cold blood. Recent events in Norway and Denver just defy belief. There will always be debates about gun control after these sort of incidents, and I know some states in the US are far too lenient for their own good, but these people will find a way no matter what. Whether its a bomb, fire, sword or vehicle. It just happens that guns are the easiest way. They don't take any courage to use, give you an instant and entirely dominant advantage and are relatively easy to use as well. I just don't understand the mindset in shooting unarmed people, especially kids.

I do think it's a bit harder to commit an outrage with the alternative ways you suggested. Plus it doesn't have that pseudo machismo that a gun can have.
Using the horrific events in Denver as a reason to enforce stricter gun laws. I 100% agree that assault weapons shouldn't be legal to purchase, but the fact is that people can get them. Period. If they want an assault weapon bad enough, someone will sell it to them. Not in a store, mind you, but out of the trunk of their car. These people exist, and they make a pretty good profit. Adding stricter gun laws (more "gun free" zones, longer waiting periods on handguns), seems counter intuitive, and almost disregards illegal firearm sales. Criminals, by definition, do not follow laws. So, only the law-abiding citizens are in trouble when harsher firearm laws are in place.
They should, however, make purchasing a firearm as extensive as receiving a driver's license. From written, to oral exams, to a "training" exam. I am a gun owner, just one handgun, and would be more than happy going through a course like that. As for assault weapons and the like, I just can't see the reasoning behind them being marketed to the public at all. Hope I've not offended anyone, as that is not my intent.

As a stalwart supporter of shooting sports in the UK I personally couldn't care for bans of firearms. Bans change nothing, that much has been proven.
Anyone with some common sense knows banning legally held firearms does nothing to kerb criminal use of them. If you want a gun, you can find one. However, what I am fine with is the application and vetting processes involved when applying for a firearms licence. I don't think the UK needs to, or can do any more in this area.
I, along with the majority of the world, am appalled by these senseless killings, but banning guns won't effect things. You ban guns, people will use something else, home made explosives, knives, lead pipe, candlesticks, cars, poison, or how about the biggest killer used, found in pretty much every home; the good old fashioned carving knife? Are all these gonna be banned too?
The chances that you get killed by a gun/rifle is 30 times higher if you are living in the US than if you are living in Germany.
Why? Because you can get them so easily there *
USA's firearms death rate is the 12th highest in the world, after countries like Honduras, Brazil and Nicaragua.
Every year, 30000 people are being killed by a firearm in the US.
*but it does not mean that there is no way to legally buy one over here as well if you really try hard.

To be honest, a gun is a gun. After you get away from air weapons, it doesn't matter. Shotguns are less stringently controlled than firearms, and they are devastating up close. And the humble .22 L/R is the most popular calibre in the world right now. It's considered low powered, but that's ludicrous. You wouldn't willingly stand in front of one at 200 yds. So it doesn't really matter whether it's an assault rifle, a handgun or a farmers side-by-side shotgun. Where the answer lies is in the application, vetting and safe ownership. No previous convictions, no history of depression or mental illness, no criminal association - and when alls said done, spot checks and an across the board confirmation of the boxes that need to be ticked. Even in Britain the processes change slightly with each police force. However, I've used weapons in the US at ranges, and hunting - and it is far too easy for people to get a weapon. Some of the guys I've shot beside at clubs out thre simply would never have got a licence in the UK.

Reminds me when I was in Florida on my honeymoon. The mrs got engrossed in a shop selling rocks.... anyway I go into this outdoors kinda place and instantly homed in on the gun counter. There stood a family, with dad examining a revolver, looked like a S&W Model 10. "it kinda feels light enough, she needs it for protection ya see, needs to be kinda small so it fits in her purse" says the dad "here, see if you like it hunny" he says, handing it over to his daughter. She couldn't have been older than 18.

who, honestly, if met with the denver situation could do it and actually shoot the guy? i recall some ex SAS type once saying that you only carry or produce a weapon if you're comfortable with using it, otherwise it gets in the way and you have more chance of it being taken off you, and then used against you. how crap would that be, getting shot with your own gun?
There's so much to consider when taking a shot. Is there anybody in your arc of fire, what's behind the taget incase of over penetration?, are you going to make the shot?, is anybody going to get hit by your opponent when you draw their fire? Firearms officers, special forces and front line soldiers train all the time to stay fresh. I heard somewhere that US Navy Seals fire 2000 pistol rounds a week just to keep reflex and muscle memory. I doubt I fired that many pistol rounds in a ten year army career!

I'm not being soft - I've spat mud and blood out many times either playing rugby or in tough training etc but just to walk along and hock out a great egg yolk of flob as you go by is f**king disgusting! The first guy just did it and carried on walking. The next guy did it as he stopped in front of me and started texting on his phone. I told him he was a filthy bas**rd and he couldnt have been more surprised. It's just a terrible habit some blokes have. I mean, imagine eating in a beer garden or something and the waiter spits as he walks away. Nobody would expect that, so why is it any different in the street?
