Season Finale of AMC's Mad Men Ends With Bond "Homage"

Anybody who is a Bond fan, especially a Connery Bond fan should check out the last two or three minutes of the season finale of "Mad Men". Jon Hamm, as 60's adman Don Draper walks into a bar as the theme from YOLT sung by Nancy Sinatra plays and engages in one of the most "Bondien" moments I've ever seen outside of an actual Bond film. You gotta check this out. Sent shivers down my spine.

I really like Daniel Craig as Bond....but if Jon Hamm was British -{

I wish they didn't use the YOLT song in Mad Men. The bar scene was ok but this show is just a well done soap opera set in the 60s. The whole season was pretty bad with the exception of Jessica Paré's Zou Bisou Bisou number. I picked up the red vinyl version of it. Other than that I've already forgotten about this season and I doubt I'll watch next year.

Disagree about the quality of this years season of "Mad Men". Does it have "soap opera" elements? Yes...but the show IMO (especially this past season) is about much more. Being a product of the 60's I am probably biased anyway.

However that isn't really the point, I was just struct by how "Bondlike" Jon Hamm appeared in the bar scene.
Regarding the use of "You Only Live Twice", I'm sure EON and the Barry Estate made a nice penny in licensing fees and the lyrics do relate a lot of what has been going on in the series/episode.

You guys must have missed that the movie that Don Draper and Peggy go to see was 1967's Casino Royale. When the movie started you hear that unmistkeable music.

Yeah...noticed it but I have a subconscious block when it comes to that film.
Brings back bad memories of my older brother (I was only 10 at the time) teasing me that Connery was no longer James Bond and Peter Sellers was now Bond and "Casino Royale" was his proof. I was very relieved when I saw an article in the newspaper about the next "real" Bond film YOLT would be out for XMAS with Connery.

Of course his next instrument of torture was the cover of Esquire Magazine that had an article on the upcoming release of YOLT which had an image of women in black mourning and the headline "James Bond is Dead" ....which of course was a play on the faked death of Bond in the film.

Almost looks like an unoffical audition for John Hamm for the part in readiness for when Craig leaves.

I have always believed that the character of Don Draper has been highly influenced by Connery's portrayal of Bond. In many ways Don Draper is pretty much Connery's Bond if he was born in the USA and became an ad man instead of a secret agent/assassin.

Well, Hamm is 41 and American. If all goes well with "Skyfall" DC is probably on board for two more films so it would be at least 6 years before a new Bond is cast. I don't think EON would cast another 46 yr old as Bond (they did with Roger Moore, but that was then and this is now) and the American thing doesn't help either.

Being American notwithstanding, Hamm does IMO have the classic Bond attributes. He's listed most places as being a shade over 6ft but may be one of the few actors who is actually taller than his listed height (he appears to be closer to 6'2" and certainly looks that way on screen).

Hamm looks like a cross between Connery and Dalton and definately can do the gentleman/animal thing that worked so well for Connery's Bond.

Fortunately I am a Craig fan, however it's always fun to play "who would make a good Bond".

    Really ?

Then it's a big 'no' from me....he looks all 'wrong'....and I don't mean just for Bond....he just looks 'wrong'...he stands awkwardly for a start...and his head doesn't look as if it should be on that body (yea, I know - like I can talk :)) )

Can't say I seen much of him though...but from what I have seen of him...he hasn't got a prayer...

Jon Hamm can pull off the Bond look. But being Bond is another thing. Don Draper is a scum bag and that is far from Bond's character. Jon Hamm seems to be a good actor, at least in Mad Men. He was a different type of scum bag in Bridesmaids. Don't ask me why I saw that one. I still think that Michael Weatherly's Dr. No scene in NCIS is better than this Mad Men scene. You had to be a Bond fan to pick up on it.

That final bar shot was good. However, I was more interested in the girl that approached him for her friend. She's pretty and hopefully will get more roles because of that small scene. Also, Bond was mentioned a few times this season in Mad Men. One of the marketing guys mention Bond and I believe Don was reading From Russia with Love in his apartment at one point. Megan mentions it. I tried to get a good look at the cover.

If Hamm was British, IMO alot of folks on this site would be huge backers for him to be Bond. But he ain't.....so the closest he's gonna get to Bond is Don Draper.

The one thing I believe we can all agree upon is that "Mad Men" has certainly reflected how big a cultural phenom that Bond was in the 60's.

Just watched the finale. Great stuff. There was another Bond reference earlier in the season when Don is shown reading 'From Russia with Love.'

I really get a kick out of the episodes where you see Dr's smoking while they examin patients, nobody wearing seatbelts in cars, small children sitting on their parents lap while they drive. Really illustrates what a different time it was.
