Goldfinger 50th Anniversary

I know that we are celebrating the 'birth' of EON's James Bond film series this year, but other than the hub-bub of the upcoming 'Skyfall' there hasn't been much buzz about 'The World's Greatest Spy'.

I hadn't watched any Bond films lately, so my wife and I sat down and enjoyed Goldfinger for the first time in quite a while. A couple things struck me as I was watching it - the first is that the film is almost 50 years old and holds up extremely well in both storytelling and visual style. The second (and I almost feel ashamed to mention it) is that many of the scenes are almost begging to be seen in 3D. This is not to say that the film would be 'better' in 3D, but merely that Ken Adam's sets and Guy Hamilton's shots would lend themselves very well to a 3D conversion.

With that being said, I am making the suggestion that I think a lot of Bond fans would enjoy seeing a Goldfinger 3D conversion released to celebrate the classic's 'golden' anniversary. I know both my wife and I got excited about the idea.

So I say, 'Let's make it happen, EON!'

But... it's another two years until it's 50 years old. People are banging on about the anniversary of the first Bond film. ?:)

You and your wife are getting excited by a Goldfinger 3D conversion.... Bloody hell, if that's what married life does to you... :D :p

Daren, my friend, my fellow desert rat, I hate to say it but you have never been so wrong. One of the things that irks me is George Lucas constantly tinkering with his old films--let's update the special effects! let's take those un-PC guns out of ET! let's put a film not made in 3D into 3D!--and I would hate to see the Bond producers follow suit. By all means, put out a crisp new digitally-restored print of Goldfinger in the theaters in 2014, but leave 3D to James Cameron. . .

I understand that on the face of it, the idea seems 'gimmicky' but I certainly don't see it that way in this instance. Unlike George Lucas, who will continue to re-release the same stuff over and over because he added added another stormtrooper to a scene, or because it was declared Wookie Appreciation Day, I see this as a legitimate milestone for a classic film. But simply releasing a 're-mastered' version seems like a lazy money grab. The film seems to have been remastered a dozen times already for every DVD special edition, collector's edition, golden edition, millenial edition and blue-ray release. I think it's inevitable (whether we like it or not) that we will see a 007 film hit 3D screens in the next few years simply because that's the thing to do. It seems like a natural opportunity to test the market, further the brand, celebrate the film's anniversary, and make a haul of cash?
