"Spambot" Posts

Hi everyone--a small request to make. When you encounter one (or several) of those obnoxious "spambot" posts--you know: a long, wordy posting with embedded links to sites for shoes or DVDs or Asian escort services--please be sure to hit REPORT. It will be dealt with as quickly as possible. Also, please do not reply to a spambot posting--either commenting on the post itself or ESPECIALLY quoting it in full. The 'bot posting is always deleted--and the poster banned--and you create just more stuff that has to be deleted. Also, there's hardly ever a real person behind the 'bot--so why bother? Thanks!

Well, you did kind of inspire this posting, TP, but I'd been planning to make this an announcement for some time. We've been getting a lot of those stupid 'bots and most people do report them. . .I'm just trying to keep people from clogging up the threads by trying to have a conversation with these things. Their entire purpose is to get you to their sites and to divest you of your money. Give yourself props for getting me to act, TP!

Is it true that by replying to the thread, it encourages the bot to write more crap?

I don't know about that one. . .could be. . .those bots are such a pain to get rid of, though. You can ban the user and block the e-mail address, but another one is just waiting to spring up. . .

There seems to have been quite a few of these spambot posts hitting the site lately. Is it possible for there to be one of those security type question boxes to be added when someone registers with the site, whereby the "code" shown has to be entered by the user before their account is set up??

Just a thought as it might stop this crap happening.

    It's something that has been mentioned before....or you have to be "approved" before you can post...but anything like this can only be done by Si...so please just keep reporting them and I'll clear them up ASAP - thanks -{

Thanx for the reply. We seem to be regularly visited by these bloody crap things too often.

Btw ... As I'm relatively new here - out of interest, who's Si? Is he the site 'owner'? Not sure I've seen owt of him on here (if he posts under that name).

We tend to get these spambots on a cycle....very active for awhile, then they lay off for a few months....guess its our turn again :#

Yes, Si is the owner of the site...he posts under the name of SiCo...although not very often.

Going wildly off topic here, but I take it (reading a bit between the lines) that Sico has little interest in the site now? Or am I very wrong??

Only reason I ask is that if we did want some sort of a registration security check at the outset (to stop these spambot posts), then how could we request this feature?

Si is always buried with work mate, he has very little time for AJB these days.

From what I understand, the maintenance and upkeep of AJB all comes out of Si's pocket. I absolutely love the fact AJB remains advert free.

We have a lot to thank Si for setting up and paying for AJB, but these days it seems you either wait a very long time for something to change, or you go with the flow and stick with what you got.

For Bond information, AJB comes second to none IMO.

Fully agree mate - have learnt so much about many areas relating to the whole Bond enterprise (naff term I know) from this site, as well as enjoying the banter & humour that goes on here. You're spot on regarding adverts ... Went back on to Facebook briefly the other day (schoolboy error) & it has been destroyed by that sort of crap.

Btw I hope my earlier post hasn't come across as a whinge, as it was most certainly not intended to be that, more a thought on how to deal with the annoyance of spambots. Having gleaned what has been said just, then their occasional presence is indeed a very small price to pay for having this site & the community that has been built.

Fair play to Si for keeping the place going in his absence. He's certainly got my full respect for doing so!
