Your Favourite Bond Soundtracks?

To me, John Barry is inextricably connected with Bond (since he *really* wrote the theme & all),
john_barry_dies_aged_77.jpg
and his stuff ranges from merely great to ultimately awesome.
For ME, Goldfinger & DAF are my favourites... however I've not heard AVTAK or TLD for a long time, so that could change soon....
Oh, and I adore the LALD score btw.
What are YOUR favourite Bond scores?
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.

The soundtrack to On Her Majesty's Secret Service is my all-time favorite soundtrack, with You Only Live Twice a close second.

Do you mean the album or just the theme song from the movies? If the albums....Golden Eye, I love the piece that plays when they first steal the Golden Eye.

If you mean the theme songs then, Live and Let Die, Moonraker, A View to a Kill, Living Daylights, License to Kill, Golden Eye, Tomorrow Never Dies, World and You Know My Name. I don't like any of the themes from the Connery films.

Wow! I never thought I'd see that comment. To each his own, I know, but those are the classics, man!!!

I was born way, way after Connery stopped playing Bond. In fact I'm the same age as A View to A Kill. I don't care for lounge or big band style music. In the words of Joan Jett, I love Rock N Roll. lol.

I guess I just reflect the tastes of the Old School Crew (although I wouldn't exactly call Moonraker or Goldeneye Rock N Roll! :)) )

My favourite Bond scores are You Only Live Twice and On Her Majesty's Secret Service. I can't really separate them they are both superb. Close behind is Moonraker, I particularly enjoy Flight into Space, Centrifuge and Corinne Put Down. As for non-Barry scores my favourite's are Live And Let Die (George Martin) and The Spy Who Loved Me (Marvin Hamlisch).

As for my favourite piece of Bond music, it is The Wedding from YOLT. I must have heard it a thousand times by now but it never fails to blow me away.

It's all been said about John Barry. I can't really add much more. A quite brilliant composer. My favourite Bond scores of his are DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER, MOONRAKER & ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. There's an underlying sinister quality about these scores, particularly DIAMONDS that I just love.

    Yes, I agree.
I also just watched TLD the other night for the first time since the 80's, and it's soundtrack is an instant addition to my favourites list!

My favourite is also OHMSS. It combines great action music, a classic love theme and some classical John Barry grandeur (specifically Journey to Blofeld's Hideaway).

    Runners-up are:

You Only Live Twice - some of John Barry's most accomplished work in my opinion, even though YOLT is my least favourite Bond film.
Goldfinger - the classic Bond sound at its best.
From Russia With Love - less scale than Barry's later scores but still quintessential Bond.
The Living Daylights - A fresh flavour added to Barry's sound, and a memorable farewell for the master.

As you can see, John Barry clearly dominates my favourites. From the other composers, my favourites are:
Tomorrow Never Dies - David Arnold's debut is still probably my favourite of his scores. It has a nice mix of old school and modern Bond.
Casino Royale - Nice to see Arnold's music standing on it's own in this one, since he doesn't really have the Bond theme to turn to whenever he is stuck.
Live And Let Die - just a lot of fun to listen to!!

Here's a poser for all. What's your favourite gunbarrel logo Bond theme arrangement? I'd go for THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN. I like the integration of strings & percussion. DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER would be second with its vibrant electric guitar. I suppose I like this John Barry period best as he was moving away from his jazz leanings into slower instrumentals. The two styles fuse well. Thirdly would be THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS with ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE coming in fourth. To round off, fifth place would probably go to MOONRAKER.

Not having examined them all side-by-side closely, I would default to DAF's gunbarrel.

DAF is a good choice I think. I also really like YOLT's gunbarrel as well - a slightly different style which I really enjoy.

    LALD's gunbarrel is also great.

And, I really enjoy the GE gunbarrel as well, despite it being totally different in style to the rest.

My favorite gun barrel Bond theme is GoldenEye. A few nods go to Casino Royale (even though it isn't like it should be), Die Another Day, and World.

Least favorite is Quantum of Solace. I hated that it was CG and at the end of the movie. I don't mind the CG gun barrel if it's for a Bond video game, but not for the films. I hope they get it right in Skyfall.

    1. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (THE movie that shows how important music is for a Bond movie. Lazenby was an unknown actor and the first to replace Connery but after the gunbarrel and title sequence he is Bond. The rest of the soundtrack is very good as well but I hate "where christmass trees are grown" because after just thinking about it it is stuck in my head for 3 hours. There is a very interesting documentary about John Barrry on YT where he says that he upped the ante a bid with the soundtrack of OHMSS because he wanted to make sure people would accept Lazenby as Bond; or something like that.)

    1. You Only Live Twice (The movie is a favorite of mine and the soundtrack as well.)

My favourite pieces from throughout the series:

'To Hell with Blofeld', from Diamonds are Forever. Of course, this is undoubtedly the most common tune throughout Sean Connery's run (isn't the core version just called '007'?), except for the Bond theme itself, but the version that played at the end of Diamonds are Forever seemed particularly exciting and action-packed.

'Hercules Takes Off', from The Living Daylights. Just a great action theme, that played throughout the fantastic airfield scene. It was then followed almost immediately by 'Inflight Fight', which played during the INCREDIBLE fight with Necros (probably my favourite Bond stunt, made all the more exciting by the fact that Dalton did it himself, without a stuntman).

And last, but definitely not least - and by that, I do mean the best ever - 'We Have All the Time in the World', from On Her Majesty's Secret Service. A lot of people have listed this already, and... well, words literally cannot describe it. An incredibly moving piece of music.

Of course, there are definitely other great pieces throughout the series, but these are the only ones currently stuck in my head :D

    Personal favourite score- Thunderball

Barry produces two earth-shattering themes ("Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and the title piece) and makes his most effective uses of the "007" theme ever. The underwater sequences are beautifully underlined, and the Bond theme crops up in haunting extracts from time to time.

I love the late 60s early 70s Barry scores for Bond and beyond (lion in winter, the last valley, Walkabout, the persuaders theme).

Personal favorite is YOLT and the Space Capsule, James Bond-Ninja, and Mountains and Sunsets

    After that OHMSS, DAF, Moonraker,TLD

Non-Barry I like LALD, TSWLM, and FYEO. Of Arnold's scores I think TND and CR are the best. I don't rate LTK or GE too highly. Serra's score being the worst, of course I didn't have a Nintendo 64 so that score for wasted not hold any positive memories and I kept going back to the feeling of disappointment in having such a flash in the pan composer and being so low key.
  • HE1NZHE1NZ Posts: 1MI6 Agent
Since I was a kid I absolutely adored Moonraker music. Flight Into Space probably sounds less Bond than Serra's score, but what an amazing piece.
My favorite parts are bombastic Barry themes: 007, Underwater Mayhem, Dawn Raid on Fort Knox, Opening Titles on FRWL, Capsule in Space, 007 and Counting, A Drop in the Ocean, OHMSS theme.
DAF and YOLT gunbarrels are the best. They sound so beefy. I think is low brass or maybe something else. Barry's scores of Connery era has absolutely the best arrangements. They don't use those instruments these days unfortunately. GoldenEye and David Arnold's gunbarrels are also cool.
