'Fun' Bonds vs. 'Serious' Bonds, and your top 5 of each

chrisisallchrisisall Western Mass, USAPosts: 9,062MI6 Agent
The difference for me is that I can put on the 'fun' Bonds whenever & mindlessly enjoy them, the 'serious' Bonds get played less frequently, as I don't want to burn out on them. And here is another thing- where do you place those movies on the line in between? This might warrant some discussion.... I define 'fun' as involving world domination or comic book-like antics, and 'serious' as, well, not so much of that. :))
My lists, in order:

FUN
Tomorrow Never Dies
Diamonds Are Forever
Spy Who Loved Me
Dr. No
Man With The Golden Gun

SERIOUS
Licence To Kill
Goldeneye
The Living Daylights
Thunderball
Dr. No

Hmmm... one made it into both lists.... :))

Now I'm confused. I saw YOLT as a FUN Bond, while you saw it as SERIOUS, whereas I thought FRWL was a SERIOUS film while in your view it was a FUN Bond movie. I realize these are all merely opinions, but I thought certain types of Bond movies fall into the FUN category, i.e. silly plots, elaborate villains and lairs, outrageous stunts and gadgets, obvious jokes, etc. For the SERIOUS category I was thinking more realistic scenarios, subtler humor, etc. Am I missing the point?

Well, part of it is finding out which movies are considered which... you could make the argument that certain elements are preposterous, but the movie is fun anyway, whereas someone else might say IN SPITE of those elements, the overall film is serious in nature....

Agreed! I think a movie (TND) where half of the time Bond is walking around with a machine gun shooting everyone in sight should not be considered as a FUN Bond movie, but to each his own (said the woman as she kissed her cow). If I have to respond on every post I do not agree with I could quit my job.

Nothing wrong with that at all, dude. One person's FUN is another person's SERIOUS. I was just asking because my original thought when I read chrisisall's title was that he had specific categories in mind. Apparently I was wrong - my bad! :#

Actually, I take the movie terribly seriously, but it *IS* about a type of world domination... :s

Sorry old man, according to chrisisall's Rules, Goldfinger is a FUN movie; Oddjob is clearly a cartoon character, and there is a world (gold) domination motif! X-(

Hahahah, just kidding. But seriously, that's one that fall RIGHT on the line for me.

Just to be pedantic--it's part of my real-world job--I wonder if a better distinction would be Realistic or Unrealistic. Frankly, I find some of the most serious Bonds to have a strong sense of fun--FRWL, OHMSS--and some of the most fun films have deadly serious moments--Goldfinger, TSWLM. Just sayin'. . .

That's problematical for me personally, as I view nearly all motion pictures as 'unrealistic' all around. Is Braveheart "realistic'? Is Lawrence of Arabia? To what degree??

What really separates "In Like Flint" from YOLT (in terms of realism) except budget & LOL moments?
Serious can be realistic or unrealistic, as can Fun.
It (like life itself), is SO subjective. But that's why I started this thread- to explore opinions on the relative levels of real world connections the Bond movies have.

    Top Five Serious Bonds:
    1. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    2. From Russia With Love
    3. Dr. No
    4. Casino Royale
    5. Licence To Kill

    Top Five Fun Bonds:
    1. Goldfinger
    2. The Spy Who Loved Me
    3. Diamonds Are Forever
    4. Moonraker
    5. Die Another Day

Another interesting topic. The serious Bonds are fairly self-explanatory aside from Dr. No. Although the villain's set-up is bizarre it never feels daft & I like the emphasis on espionage in the first half. The fun Bonds were a bit more difficult to analyse. To me Goldfinger's great fun, but more serious than say, The Spy Who Loved Me. Both feature an OTT henchman, but Oddjob never feels comedic in the way Jaws does. But perhaps in 1964 people were chuckling in their cinema seats at the notion of a bloke killing people with a steel-rimmed bowler hat. It's all subjective I suppose.

Having grown up with that on TV, people forget... the first time I saw it was at a Bond triple feature in the seventies, and that 'hat trick' made our jaws drop.
Today, all henchmen have a hat like that in their devious stuff collections.... :v
