Good question! Yes, it was invaded by Germany in WWII.

You say 'roughly' as far south as parts of France, which means it must be a close call. Adding to this...
Judging on where you're from I can assume that you define WWII as 1939-1945. Czechoslovakia and possibly Austria are two places that could contain somewhere that you would be unsure about. Both countries were invaded before 1939.
Therefore I'm fairly certain that it must be in either Poland or Russia. I don't know many places in either of those countries and if I'm wrong I won't have much of a clue. As it's fairly southerly I'm going to guess:
I have to admit to a mistake. I belived landlocked ment "on the mainland". Guesses made after my inncorrect answer doesn`t count, other than the guess on Croatia. The city is indeed Croatian. Sorry about the confusion.
Congratulations, NP, Split is the answer! I visited Croatia a few years back , and Split is one of the most interesting cities I have been to. The Old City is really the palace of A Roman emperor who actually retired from the job. After the fall of the empire it fell into decay, but it was resettled during the middle ages. People still live there and open their little shops. Really facinating to see a city centre that is part ancient imperial palace, part mideaval town, part modern city.
Cheers, No 24. Split is just about level with parts of the south of France, I guess it inches it. Yeah, Split looks like a nice place, I've subbed features on it for the travel mag I work on. Hope the weather was good. Sopot, Gydnia and Gdansk, the Tri City in Poland, is another one that looks good for a summer visit.
Oh, okay. I am in a town that once held Napolean III in exile. He loved it so much he returned to Paris after his exile and redesigned it based on this town.
It gets its name from a hotel.
It used to have a hovercraft service.

Okay, well not Zagreb as Bond passed through that in FRWL.
So, bearing in mind it's the beach season, then either Split or Dubrovnik?
