sorry for another sizing question but I have pre ordered a large one of these. I am between 40 and 41 inches in chest size. Could someone who owns a large one of these, tell me their chest size and how it fits. 8-)
Guys, I've just conducted a thorough test of the Barbour Lodge Jacket in an 80mph storm with rain straight of the Alantic...!!!
Absolutely amazing jacket!!!

Just got back from Europe, found a really nice spot on scarf, like the one worn in Skyfall, yes the knot is not right I just threw this together, but for €8, can you complain from a street vendor in Florence.
First time poster, long time lurker. Hello!
After reading through all the pages I'm even more confused on sizing. My average jacket size is 22" pit to pit and 19" shoulder to shoulder, with a little wiggle room down if needed. I wear Levi's in 30"x32", so my waist is on the narrow side. So I'm wondering if I shouldn't wait and go large and pray for upper torso stretching or go XL and hope that it can be tailored in a way that true to the fitted style the jacket was intended to be. Also I'm wonder if the XL will be too long in the torso, I'm 5'10". would it even be possible to shorten the torso? My wife is bidding on an XL for me on eBay as a Christmas gift but I wanted to make sure I'm going with the right size before she gets ridick competitive and spends all her Christmas loot on just me. I know sizing question has been beaten to death but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Bonus question: Did anyone ever confirm the size Daniel Craig wore?
Yeah I think the XL is too big, you are probably a large. I have had someone your chest size try on my large and it fit him. The jacket bells out, with your waist size the XL will not look too flattering so my advice go with a large.
I asked Magnoli and he's going to be making the lodge jacket for $495. I believe these will be early 2013.
Think I'd prefer the real thing for just a little more

I would too but I would need a size XXL since I see these run a bit small. But I'm not about to drop $1000+ on this. Heck I don't even want to spend $500. My wife would kill me, I live in Florida (for the time being anyway) and I have enough coats and jackets when we used to live in NY.
thought I would chime in with a little experiment I did. I had an old silk scarf from J. Lindeberg just sitting in a drawer. At Michaels the other day I noticed they had a "coccoa brown" rite dye pack for sale so I bought it with the intention of dying the scarf. Actually came out really good (wish it had been a little darker) but for $2.29, its not bad. Just thought Id share.

I'm rather shocked at some of the sizes that people wear here; of course personal preference plays a big part in it. I've seen people post photos of themselves wearing the Barbour or the Menlo and they say that it fits tight or just right and they're clearly (IMHO) too large through the body with sleeves far too long, and the shoulder seam hanging down off of the shoulder. To me that makes a jacket look sloppy and ill-fitting, however some people prefer feel over looks.
For myself, I'm 5'8-3/4" tall, 163 pounds with a 32" waist, a 42" chest, and 46-1/2" shoulders (measuring around the widest part). I tried on both the small and the medium Barbour. The small was very snug but the medium was clearly too big through the body and the sleeves were far too long. The sleeve-holes are cut quite small so they fit better in the medium, and the shoulders were looser but the seam hung off my shoulders. Also, the "width" of the bottom of the jacket was WAY too loose in the medium (I guess that's to accommodate a bird in the poacher's pocket).
At first I thought the jacket didn't fit me well but I tried on both sizes again a few weeks later and realized that the small fit me much better then I thought - I was able to wear a dress shirt and medium weight wool crewneck under it. The sleeve holes are a bit tight but not impossibly so, and the jacket seems to have stretched out a bit now across the shoulders (I thought about getting it taken out an inch in the back but it seems okay now). If I had gotten a medium I would have had to get everything taken in; worst case scenario with the small I'd maybe let the top of the back out 1".
FWIW Craig is 5'11" and, IIRC, 185 pounds when he's muscular and he wore a medium.

It's crazy that based on your 42" chest that the small was a better fit for you. I'm 6 ft, 38-9" chest wearing an undershirt (very fitted) and the medium was perfect size on me. Shoulders hung at the right position, arm length was great (I usually have 26-26.5" length from shoulder seam for jackets), and the body was pretty fitted for a "sports jacket" style coat. Goes to show you that size, preference and personal measurements are never accurate from one to person to the next. Always try on, or get the actual garment measurements and compare with what fits you the best.

What's really insane - and I mentioned this in a previous post - is that not only do I take a size 38 suit jacket, but it will only fit me if it's "slim fit" style. Different manufacturers have different specs that they design to; I find European clothes fit me much better than "American" clothes (Seriously, I need to buy an extra-small tee shirt or polo shirt from The Gap or Club Monaco? Seriously? And sometimes, especially from The Gap, they're STILL too loose in the body!)
To me the most important part of fit for a jacket or shirt is that the shoulder seam line up with the edge of the shoulder. Any looser and it looks sloppy; any tighter and it looks douchebaggy. Other things can be tailored, but the shoulder is where it all starts (unless the drop-shoulder look from the 80s comes back!). I count myself very fortunate that I live in Toronto and can try on a lot of clothes before I buy...my heart goes out to people living in areas where they have to shop for certain brands on-line.
Here's a pic from Inception of what I think a great fitting jacket looks like:
Fits are indeed subject to opinion - but I find that most people wear very poorly fitting clothes, often too baggy.
I'm 6ft2 and currently 190lbs. When I get back to the UK I should hit 200lbs after some gym work, and I have pretty broad shoulders. I have gone for a Large, and if it's just far too big, then I will simply sell it and either source a medium, or give up on this jacket
A good fitting jacket looks better than a poorly fitting jacket, irrespective of make, price, style, and on-screen accuracy
"It is better to be as well dressed as possible to stave off, at least for a very little bit, the total collapse of civilization"
Oh yeah JGL's jacket in Inception fits great. I get what your saying. I'm in the same boat as you with clothing. Always need slim fit, and have to get anything "regular fit" tailored, and I take a small in all Jcrew shirts, and a small in their slim shirts too. The regular smalls still need to be taken in. If that's the case, are you sure you're measuring your chest right? If you measure 42, I'm amazed you fit in smalls and xs sizes.
As for the shoulders, that is the starting point of buying a suit. The shoulders must fit properly first, then the rest can be tailored etc. As for the Barbour jacket, to achieve the SA fit, the jacket needs to be fitted but not tight, shoulders aligned properly, with "just" enough room for a bit of movement in the chest, not much though, maybe an inch.
If you wear a size 38 suit, and you find that size small works well on you, then you're probably a size 38. Either that or you look completely ridiculous. Slim fit is one thing, but I think it might be physically impossible for a true 42 to fit into a 38 with destroying the jacket.
Big thanks to everyone for helping with my question of fit. Although I still have about the same level of confusion. Lol. Seems everyone is all over the place on sizing in this thing. I find it incredible that Daniel Craig wore a medium after what I've read. He's my height but has more muscle mass, same weight, broader shoulders. I dont see him in a medium in this thing. Just my take.
I moved back up to Alaska last year and have had to make peace with the fact that there is retail void here beyond baseline Nordstrom and Banana Republic. So I never have the option to try on clothes I'd want to purchase. I'm just gonna have to flip a coin between the Large and XL.

Best to go for the XL than Large. I'd rather have something a little bit bigger than smaller. And for some of us that are not built like DC or slim, we can't buy jackets that won't look good on us.
