I keep hearing from people, "I thought TLD was better than LTK" or vice-versa. Personally I think they're both very good, but I enjoy TLD a bit more because of John Barry's score- it give the feel of a proper Bond movie better than LTK's Kamen music.
The reason i keep hearing for why most Bond fans dont like LTK is the gore. They seem to forget that the preceeding films had its share of gory scenes such as the fountain of blood and chunks after the skier went through a snow plow in OHMSS and the classic electrocution of Oddjob in Goldfinger.

Actually, the scene that had me wincing was when they told Felix "We gave her a nice honeymoon" just before he's lowered to a shark.... that is f*****g evil. X-(
If they'd been allowed to show, the Stunt diver having his
false leg being ripped off by a shark, Now that would of
been GORE. )
I still love the shot of the shark attacking one of Kristatos's
Men from FYEO, very well done. -{
So I agree Gore has always been in the Bonds.

I will admit it the blood fountian scene in OHMSS did suprise me since it was made in the 60's
Then again Gore can be a funny thing, as a Teen I watched "The Evil Dead "
No problem all the usual Horror stuff, The bit I found hard to watch was the
Girl having the pencil stabbed through her ankle. And In "The Thing" the cutting
of a thumb to get a blood sample. )
Heads growing legs and crawling off, Thats fine, But someone getting a Papercut

I wonder how a 007 Horror movie would be like.....*hears all the Bond fans say "HELL NO"*
Timothy Dalton is definitely one of the best Bond's, but I wouldn't call him the best one.
He does seem to get closest to the novell version of the book, and heck, he seems to be the only actor so far who have actually read all of the novells in preparation. (Correct me if i'm wrong!)
But, in terms of a cinematic Bond, he doesn't really rank as the best Bond for me. I liked Dalton very much, I really appreciated what he did to the role. But he just isn't Connery, he doesn't bring the typical Bond humor to it that Brosnan and Moore are able to deliver. Although, if he had done more movies, maybe he would have had a 'bigger name' among the other Bond actors...
I think Connery himself would say that he isnt the best, Dalton and himself.
Truthfully, with all due respect to Connery, I really don't think there is a 'best' Bond actor anymore. I used to think it was Connery, then for a bit Brosnan was my man, my recent re-discovery of Dalton's intensity has & still fascinates me...
But basically, all actors brought something significant to the role... I can no longer assign the term 'best' to any actor of film.
Although my favourites are Connery, Dalton & Brosnan (not necessarily in that order). :v
I agree chrisisall, Now that so many actors have Played Bond. He's moved into the realms of
Sherlock Holmes, and Tarzan etc. That there have been and will continue to be Movies with
these characters for years to come.
So in many ways it's not a question of the best actor but rather how each actor picks up on
some aspect of Bond's personality or character, to play the role

Yes, and of which actor resonates with your personal idea of Bond... -{
I have Connery & Craig tied for first then Dalton third. My problem with Daltons Bond films is they were serious but didnt entirely let go of the past silliness. TLD: Bakers performance was too out of place, the cello scene is fun but ridiculous, and thank God they got rid of the magic carpet ride scene! LTK: Who thought it was a good idea to cast wayne newton in that serious film, the truck scene got out of hand, & felix is just to dam happy in the closing phone call!
Daltons performance was spot on though. I wish he would have done more films with a director that actually understood his take on Bond!
Dalton is the Bond I think of the most when reading the books. He is my second favorite Bond. Connery being the top. I think both of Dalton's films are strong. I just watched a review on BeingJamesBond.com of Licence to Kill and even though the movie does have some problems I still like it and vastly prefer it to Quantum of Solace. Dalton played Bond on a normal mission and a revenge mission. There is an old interview around the time of The Living Daylights that I still have on tape. Dalton talks about Bond and the books. In many ways TLD is the last big Bond battle movie.
I agree with most of your assessment about Dalton's performance and his relative rank as Bond. My only disagreement is that I don't believe LTK was one of the weaker Bonds. In fact it ranks fairly high for me, mostly because of Dalton's performance..
Timothy Dalton was arguably the closest Bond to the man in the novels, but that doesn't automatically make him my favourite Bond. I personally would place him after Connery and Craig in my list of favourite Bonds. I would say Dalton and Brosnan are tie for the third spot.
Although he does bring a greater sense of Fleming to the part, I find Connery and Craig more compelling cinematic characterisations. I celebrate what Dalton did with the character, but one problem is that in my opinion he only made one really good film (The Living Daylights), and even that falls short of classic Bond status. And Licence To Kill is one of the weakest Bond films in my opinion.

Dalton & Davi's performances for me. Plus- a hidden lair that gets blowed up real good. B-) :v
If ONLY Barry had done the music...
Both of Dalton's movies are in my top 5, though.
Was Timothy's take on Bond the best of all?
Emotional, intense, the earmarks of a man on the edge- the antithesis of an uncaring and cool-at-all-times soldier that expects to live forever.
To me, Tim's Bond was in the moment, all or nothing. Daniel's Bond follows the same pattern, in some ways IMO.
Although Dalton is not my favourite, I did think he made a great Bond, like many others in this thread have said, I wished he could have had more time in the role. Alothugh I wasn't a fan of LTK, I did enjoy TLD, and brought a new dimension to the role from the Moore years. It suddenly became a lot more serious again.
I do think many people under appreciate him as Bond and definately deserves more respect for his role in the Bond franchise.
The pre-title sequence in TLD is great, one of my favourites.
