Wall Street Journal this morning said consumers hate the new maps and Apple made a mistake.

Yeah, this one is tricky. I haven't had an issue, but I definitely keep hearing some bad ones. People getting lost by the GPS placement or routed miles away from their real chosen locations. Less roads and businesses than Google, more picky about name searches, etc.

Google is king of consumer maps, and it is going to be a while before Apple can make people stop noticing the under-the-hood change for the app.

On the one hand, an article I read suggested that Google started out even worse with their maps (which isn't too relevant now that it is the standard for consumer mapping), and this is how you evolve a product like this, by getting as much feedback as possible from worldwide user data. On the other hand, they've just replaced a superior product with their own inferior maps product because they want to avoid licensing with their frenemy due to feuding. In the long run as they fix things, it won't be a big deal, but it sounds like a lot of people are bound to find at least one or two issues in their usage over the next several months.

Generally, most of what I see when Apple replaces a popular third-party app is that they do it better and simpler by integrating it into the OS. This time, they don't seem to be getting that feedback. Supposedly, they can pump out fixes for it quick thanks to the pressure and cash they have on them. For now, it just looks great, apparently.

That said, the Google Earth app has been available for a while and is basically a more eye-candy rich version of Maps. So grab that if you want Google Maps in the mean time.

Just realized, it arrives at my billing address tomorrow, then I get it here Monday. It'll be a slow weekend.

Apparently, the Statue of Liberty doesn't exist in iOS 6. :))

Most people, including myself, never knew there was a street view option in the original Maps app. This is the first time I've ever heard it mentioned and I had to Google search. Turns out, few people caught on to it.

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but here's a decent workaround for google maps in iOS6:

Basically you go to google maps in your web browser and it will automatically create an app icon on your home screen. The most disappointing thing about the new maps is that it doesn't have public transport routes built in. Being in a city like Chicago, it's pretty significant to not have that information.

The Panoramic camera came as an upgrade with iOS 6. It's pretty cool. I've played with it a few times.
