I am sorry that I haven't replied earlier sil man, I have only read two John Gardner, the first two license renewed and special services, I thought that they were good, as far as thrillers go (probably the reason you are strangely attracted to the book). I did find that the books were very different from the real deal, Fleming. Its almost as if Gardner didn't like the character, and started to write novels about a MAN who just shared the same name. He gets rid of bonds signature car, he changes the quarter master to female, stops him smoking etc. as a wannabe writer myself I know that writers put in their interests in their novels, i.e. Fleming was a spy,Colin Dexter likes classical music so he mad his.character Morse likes it. Perhaps, Gardner had a good expierence at disnet land and added that trait to his bond character, which IMHO, doesnt suit James Bond. He was writing his own character not Flemings Bond
Agreed on this one, although I bring a revisionist perspective to the study of the controversial aspects of the James Bond continuation novels - see my The Bondologist Blog for more details on this. Also, see my other thread here on The Man From Barbarossa - where Gardner comes closest to writying James Bond into a non-Bond Gardner espionage novel IMHO.

Anyways, I'm going to hang around here for a while yet - been a member here 2003-2005 and 2010 and I'm now back here for good again in 2012!

I'm very sorry indeed if you took anything I said personally (or anyone else on AJB for that matter). I'm didn't mean it to come acrioss this way at all! I'm turning over a new leaf here and hope to fully contribute to a site I've unfairly neglected for so many years.

May I just say I was wrong (very wrong) about both CBn and AJB - I'm converteed to your way of thinking. AJB is a freer, happier place with proper moderators, and Sir Miles, you're one of the best mods anywhere! :x
