REVIEW: Magnoli Clothiers QoS cardigan

As promised a review of my Magnoli Clothiers QoS shawl collar cardigan in black.

After 3 months wait I had been expecting a high quality product as Magnoli is widely recognized as a professional tailor company.
I must admit that I am a bit disappointed with my product. First a couple of pictures of the one pictured on the Magnoli website and the original Tom Ford:

I apologize for the quality of my pictures, but you should be able to see what is going on.

The front of the cardigan. As you may notice, I have rolled it down to the second button. The shawl collar was very narrow, so in order to get an almost screen-accurate collar I had to do this.
They have used a very thin material in the bottom of the cardigan, which makes the bottom crumple and the thicker material above it billow. That is not very flattering.

The leather buttons (5) are VERY nice.

They have sewed on the two pockets in a weird way so that the wool around it crumples. It helps a bit when you are wearing it, but not much.

    Overall:
The material is great and it has a LOT of potential, but the pretty poor (and very inconsistent according to the other Magnoli cardigans I have seen) tailor work makes it not worth $175 and 3 months delivery time. I use it and it looks good but it could have been a lot better. The devil is in the details, and it seems that the details have not been thought through by the Nepalese tailors responsible for this.
I am pretty hesitant to ordering from Magnoli again in spite of the many good reviews.

I have heard this time and time again with Magnoli. The man himself seems very earnest and upfront but his product always is lacking especially at the prices he charges. It seems that the measurements provided are the key to everything magnoli does. if you go through every single measurement with a micrometer and review them 50x, you MAY end up with a nice quality product thats worth maybe half of his set prices. But most of the time people dont. Im sorry, but these pics look like a GAP cardigan you can get for $60 in terms of quality. The proportions themselves seem to be WAY off and the quality just seems representative of a $55 chinese knockoff you would find on ebay. Ive had several magnoli products (a Quantum Y3 replica, WOTW Leather and a Indy shirt) that I got a insane second hand prices. I eventually got rid of every one of them. My suggestion to Magnoli would be to find another tailor (or even move in-house but I can understand that can be cost prohibitive). Sorry, and not to put to fine a point on it, but at $175, thats just insane....

Agree on this particular item. This is my first and probably last Magnoli tailored item (I would like the Bolivia, London and Solace tie) I've ordered, so I cannot state anything about the overall production methods.
As I said, the original looks great on pictures, and the material of the Magnoli cardigan has a lot of potential for making a great product, but he fails to quality check the tailor work.
Guess I'll just have to get my hands on an original Tom Ford one day.

Not that it can't be a beautiful sight... =)

I have said for a long time that this cardigan is not his best work. There are better alternatives. There a threads full of alternatives.

Personally I would ask for a refund, cheap high street store alternatives for a quarter of the price look better in my opinion

I think he's had trouble finding good garment makers who are willing to take on this kind of work at the right price. He took the cardigan off-sale for a long time because of this, if I remember rightly. Since it's been back up for sale, the quality has suffered even more, problem is, so has his reputation.

Sorry to hear that Jacob. I bought the Magnoli Cardigan back in 2009 and I'm really happy with it 'til today! It seems that they changed the Producer :) The production from 2009 is pretty fine!
I also bought the Tom Ford Cardigan, one of my favourite items. Happy to have a Stuntdouble from Magnoli for any occasion :)

Yes, really good quality! Pic of my Magnoli Cardigan is from this year and I wear it a lot and a good companion on Travels. My Tom Ford Cardigan is only for special occasions :)
