Bond's Cruel Streak: The Cinematic Evidence

There are a few moments we all know, but any not generally discussed?

I'd never thought about it before but in TLD when Bond says he must have scared the living daylights out of that girl, he has a fiendish smirk on his face as if the idea amused him no end. That's pretty messed up, wouldn't you say? :o :))

Others?
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.

I'll bite... I never really had considered Bond's cruel smirk in TLD, either. It's a moment that stands out. While there are plenty of examples of 007 being cold and vicious—the killing of Dent in DN is probably the most famous—off the top of my head I can't think of a scene that mirrors the one you mention from TLD in which he's cruel but gleeful.

DC in CR after he offs the guy in the museum in miami gives him a nice couple slaps on the cheek. Bond is a killer he has to have a cruel streak that is his edge. When he sees a woman its should I have sex with her or kill her. Why not both. :v -{ (yes I stole that line from PB minus the Fbomb :)) )When he offs some one he straightens the cuffs or tie, makes sure the suit is not wrinkled than on with life :007)

To be honest, I don't think Dalton could deliver a humorous line to save his life. He's trying to be flippant, but it's an awful line with an awful delivery, so it merely appears fiendish. It reminds me of Calvin Dyson's humorous youtube review of TLD, he's just too intense. 'Tell me those aren't the eyes of a psychopath!' Dyson exclaims towards the end.

Perhaps Dalton's smirk is more to do with the way the writers have managed to incorporate the unweildy title into the film's narrative. :))

    Isn't Bond... a bit?
I spoke to Calvin on Facebook, he's quite a nice fellow. They yanked his YOLT review from Youtube because he included Charles Gray in a scene from Rocky Horror... copywrite infringement and all that. X-(

I've never thought of it that way, actually, but now that you mention it, you're quite right. The way he delivered the line seems to show that he was somewhat amused at the thought of scaring the living daylights out of someone.
    he's just too intense.

I don't think there's such a thing as too intense because that's the way Bond is meant to be ... short of going on a psychotic rampage, of course. He is a hired gun. The British government pays him to kill people. His job requires him to be "as cool about death as a surgeon. If it happened, it happened".
It reminds me of Calvin Dyson's humorous youtube review of TLD

I am quite a fan of Mr Dyson's Bond film reviews on Youtube :) I wonder if he is on these forums ...

Funny take, but I got more out of Dalton's line there than you did. Then again, I AM branded a Dalton Fanboy. A title I approve of BTW! :))

He seems a busy lad, all film-school-y and such. I imagine he's not hereabouts, though I mentioned to him that this site was how I found his reviews.

Hang on, this is Bond remember. He is in a middle of an assignment, he has to kill a sniper. He is all serious and he finds out nthat instead of a deadly sniper he is suppose to be shooting its a woman!! A woman getting into secret service affairs, someone ho was doing it for a joke or something, someone who didn't know how to use a gun. He shoots her gun and hopes that he scared the living daylights out of a young, silly woman. There's a difference between shooting the woman then shooting the gun and scaring her

I think Bond should be played as more callous than most when it comes to death and violence. If Bond is played as just a nice guy - a boy scout with a gun - they are doing it wrong! Not a fully flegded psycopath, he does care about his friends and goes to great lenghts to save civilians, but deffinately callous.

Basically, imagine fellow Welshman Richard Burton saying that line, with a bit of wryness, and it would nail it. It would have all the darkness, but none of the quirm inducing quality. With Dalton, when he tries to do humour, it makes me feel like the housekeepers when Peter Finch's doomed, lugubrious Farmer Boldwood tries to make merry, telling them to enjoy themselves, on the day of his long-awaited (by him) wedding to Bathsheba.

DC's smile after the bomber in Miami explodes...precious! I think Bond's cruel streak is evident in practically every movie by his quips after killing someone. I was just reading today that a symptom of sociopathic behavior is the enjoyment in being cruel and inflicting emotional and physical pain to others (close acquaintences, family, etc.), especially at a young age; one example is a child who hurts animals for fun. Well, Bond kills people who deserve it, but to enjoy doing it? ...a fine line I think.
