Any recommendations on an inexpensive ( < 500USD) alternative to the Levi's jacket or the Barbour?

I recommend the Wested Leather Indiana Jones Last Crusade Jacket. It's already per-distressed but you can easily add to that too. A quality jacket and excellent value for money!!

    http://www.wested.com/

I applaud your efforts in finding something that works for you. However, it is nowhere near the right style. The Levis is a halfbelt design that is cut to be a close fit. It also has slash pockets, a smaller collar and straps near the cuff to tighten the opening. The Wested Last Crusade is a baggier cut that has larger armhole opening, patch pockets with large flaps and a large collar.

Taking this all into consideration, you can go this route - http://www.filmjackets.com/ecommerce/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_4&products_id=31 Although this jacket is not entirely accurate to the Levis, it is miles ahead of the Wested. Another option is to search ebay for a 30-40's vintage halfbelt jacket.

Hope this is a help to those that need a budget version of the LVC.

I think the Strafford Camlin boots have been mentioned here already and the conclusion was that they were too light in colour, well, i thought i would post a couple of pics of my pair that have been polished with black shoe polish (the lighting in my pictures doesn't actually represent just how dark these now are) and they look much closer to the Islays now.
I also added some more substantial laces as the ones that come with them are very thin and just don't look right.
Very nice. Thanks for the pics.

I agree with all of that and the Filmjackets version is certainly much closer to the design of the Levi's jacket.
The Wested jacket still gives a pre-distressed 30s bomber jacket style and is excellent quality and value.

I picked up the "close enough" wingtip boots at JCP today because I couldn't get order to go through online. Good thing, too, because they run very big. Had to get a full size smaller than usual so keep in mind if you order online. Highly recommended.

Looked at the JCP boot yesterday but as stated above, they are at least 1-2 sizes to large. So size down if ordering. For me, because of the massive down size (2 for me), it affected the fit of the shoe. On the heal (loose) and a tigher feel on the foot. While I know the leather would stretch for my foot width, the heal could not be adjusted, It was a shame because I had a $10 off coupon making this a great deal.

DSW boot has a more accurate color, sizing and feel. Overall more confortable with the added padding. Downside is that the leather is not smooth but distressed.

Hope this help out folks with my IP observations. I went with the DSW version.

A slightly less expensive, but more rugged version of the C & J Islay's.

I actually prefer these to the Islay's in terms of both looks & practicality.

I have two pairs of those Kurt Geiger boots - one pair in tan and a pair in dark brown. They look great and are some of the most comfortable boots I've ever had! Highy recommended!

    NMS

Would you say the dark brown is more to the Skyfall style than the tan one?

I would yes. The Skyfall ones are somewhere between the two but probably a bit nearer the dark brown rather than the tan.

    Jon,

My local H&M had a size small last Saturday. I'm popping back into town tomorrow, so I'll have a look for you also, if you want?

I have one of these and think it's a great alternative to the Barbour 'Lodge' jacket
