I think a lot of the MR fans like the movie due to some sort of sentimental attachment they have to it from their childhood. I remember in the MR making of documentary they mentioned that after TSWLM a lot of children wrote in saying that they liked Jaws, but wished that he wasn't a bad guy. So yeah MR was made for children, its a childrens movie. Thats why people have fond memories of it, they loved it as a child.
Maybe for some people, but not for me. I know I loved Live and Let Die and Diamonds Are Forever when I was much younger, now those films are near the bottom of my list. MR though has stayed pretty much in my top 5.
Nah Nap, In both GLYE and DAD. Mr B's Bond used a laser watch too.
Its been a while since I read Moonraker, but Mr Fleming's book would suit Mr Craig's Bond well, and fir those bemoaning no globe trotting the rocket launch site could be moved to somewhere in Europe. I am not sure how the 1979 audience would have reacted, but to me, I am pleased the film version grabbed the Space Programme and did its own thing.
Re the Fleming pureists, I don't think they will ever be happy. Mr F himself was apparently not impressed with Dr No and its the film that started it all.
To me, MKR has one of my favorite Bond women. Dr Goodhead is smart, sassy, sexy and Lois Chilles plays her nicely. Yes she has to pilot the shuttle's to keep Bond in the story, but she warns us of this - she's a fully qualified Astronaut! Its good for Bond to have allies with expertise he lacks. As resourceful as he is, he can't do everything.
In a similar vein Michael Lonsdale is brilliant as Drax, he is my favourite Bond baddie as he does for Drax what Gert Frobe did for Goldfinger. Measured, calculating but dangerouly calm cool and a dry sarcasm without being flat. In fact, in some ways he improves the character. Drax in the book feels very similar to Goldfinger. The film versions are quite different.
The storyline is a bit far fetched, and the problem with Jaws is how fast he changes sides. Too abrupt. But the scale of the film certainly does not go beyond TSWLM, YOLT, or DAD. I say that considering we have the ISS puttering around the planet in reality.
If you don't like MKR, fair enough. One of the series strengths is to appeal to a wide audience. However it can't be the worst Bond film. That title will only belong to a film that kills the franchise. We are very fortunate that has not happened so far, in spite of close calls. Like 007 himself!
This is Thunderbird 2, how can I be of assistance?
