A contender for GE?

Does anyone else other than myself think that every single bond film that followed GE was nowhere near as good as it?

I don't hate the bond films from 1997 onwards, but they are all fairly low rankers for me. Whilst GE has a healthy position in my top 10...

Does anyone else feel this way? That there hasn't been a really good bond film since GE?

And to those that share my thoughts, do you think Skyfall will rank anywhere near GE?

I actually watched Goldeneye last night, and found it quite cringeworthy in places. Don't get me wrong it's a great bond film, but I found the sexual innuendo jokes lame. What else annoyed me was that they came up with fresh portrayals of characters that worked in GE, Moneypenny for instance, I like the way she was cold to bonds charms. It was a decent modern approach which they disregarded in future Brosnan films and turned her back into a 2D character.

I would defiantly say it was the best Brosnan bond. But I'm enjoying Craig's fresh approach to Bond much more and Casino Royale was (too me) a better overall film.

I agree that Casino Royale was considerably better, although Goldeneye was a good Bond film, too.

I was disappointed with Goldeneye. The theme song and a few scenes, such as Bond's encounter with Onatopp in the bath house, were very good, but overall, the film left me underwhelmed. The production looked to me like a made-for-cable movie, and the plot was, to me, a predictable cliche. When Bond was "flying" at the beginning to get to the airplane, people in the theater actually laughed but not in a good way.

It probably was the best of the Brosnan Bonds, though I am still more partial to Tomorrow Never Dies, which, with the exception of a twerpy villain, had the look and feel that I would want for a Bond movie. All of Brosnan Bonds, though, pale in comparison to Casino Royale.

Oh, and I think Skyfall will be the best Bond formula film in three decades.

I felt that CR & QOS were both better than any of the Brosnan films.

Well, yes I absolutly agree with you Jarvio! (Though Casino Royale over the years grew on me, and I rank it up pretty high now as well, but not as high as Goldeneye.)

We'll just have to wait and see what Skyfall brings us :)

If anything you've got it backwards. It's closer to being better than anything before it than after it. And even thats a huge stretch. So no, don't think so.

    CR&QOS > GE.

I thought TWINE was a decent Bond film. Goldeneye was good, TWINE was better.

For me, Goldeneye is by some distance the most entertaining of Pierce Brosnan's films. It's the only one that holds my attention from start to finish. It's also a better film than Quantum of Solace. My appreciation of Casino Royale has dimmed a little over the years but it still remains one of the better Bond films.

If the critics are to be believed then Skyfall will eclipse the lot of them.

The praise heaped upon the mediocre GoldenEye has baffled many since 1995. It has never been anything more than a mid-range entry in the series.

The overwhelmingly positive critical response pretty much proves that Skyfall and Casino Royale drive a stake through the Brosnan era.

Goldeneye was the first bond That I see in the cinema.
But that's the only special thing of this movie to me.
I rank the Craig bonds much over Goldeneye.

GE, is good, but it kind of wears off after a while. Bored with it, maybe. At the moment, I prefer QOS over GE. But GE was the first Bond film I watched in my adult life. (I watched YOLT when I was super young)

I've just finished my pre SKYFALL James Bond marathon and was surprised by just how little I enjoyed watching GE. I'm not the greatest fan of Pierce and have always felt his films have followed a downward trend from the dissapointing TND to the truly dreadful DAD, but until now I had always thought of GE as being one of the great Bond films. But really the model work is very poor and the film drags in places (especially the Severnaya scenes), the Jack Wade Caribbean scenes are particularly bad and the Q branch scene feels in tone like it belongs in a Leslie Nielsen comedy. Even the good parts of the film are spoilt by the Eric Serra industrial noises. I have to agree with Gassy Man that the 'flying' scenes left me cringing in embarrassment when I first saw it at the cinema and almost spoils the otherwise excellent PTS (though not as bad as the beach boys cover during the AVTAK PTS!).
On reflection while I consider both CR and QOS to be high points of the series I would agree that all of Pierce's films mark a distinct drop in quality and for me lack the nostalgia of the Connery/ Lazenby/ Moore films and the sheer excellence of the Craig, though I do concede this is probably as much to do with my age as it is the quality of the films themselves.

Goldeneye is not too everybody's taste but I've always loved it. It sits at number two on my list, it has a great soundtrack, great characters with a lot of depth too them and some very memorable scenes. Ultimately Goldeneye is a classic Bond film and will always go down as Pierce Brosnans legacy as James Bond. It had been seven years since the last Bond film and many people questioned the franchise, suggesting that Bond was a thing of the past and that he was no longer needed, Goldeneye had to prove people wrong and it did it and Pierce Brosnan put in a fine performance. If Goldeneye failed then Bond might not even exist now.

Since Goldeneye has there been a film that has surpassed it? Well not in the Brosnan era and in the Craig era, well certainly not Quantum Of Solace but quite possibly Casino Royale. It's a great film, I always have liked Craig and he proved critics wrong in the role but the film is so hard to rank alongside other Bond films because a number of key, traditional ingredients are missing in it. Casino Royale lies high on my list, well inside the top ten but ultimatley not above Goldeneye. I think Skyfall may knock Goldeneye of its purch though, because it seems like it will include more traditional Bond elements but will also attempt to try and re-invent the character at the sane time, it sounds very interesting and I hope it will be a great Bond film.

Totally disagree. Brosnan's first three were all on fairly equal footing, that is to say, supremely Thunderball-level entertaining, however, Natalia annoyed me & Christmas was a bit lame, so for me, TND is onnatop. :)) But they're all really good IMO.
CR & QOS take it back to the this-is-no-effing-joke times of DN, FRWL, TLD & LTK greatness. Skyfall looks to be the best of Craig's tenure so far, and I'm excited, however for me personally (and I know it's just ME & a select few others), the Bond series hit its peak with Dalton, and probably will never reach that height again, though I am liking the Craig era more & more with each viewing & successive film!
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.
